"'ve been in morocco for one week in holidays, in mirleft, in the south of the country.
was a beautiful time with Nina, painting in outstanding conditions. you know that stencil is by nature associated by the repetition : patterns for architecture, industrial marking then pop culture have been largely exploring that way. I tried in Mirleft to explore specificity with a dedicated stencil of the fish market of the village, that I painted on place two years after I took my original picture, trying to make real contextual art with a stencil. Crazy that South Morocco is still so quite that you can make a copy of reality in between two years, checking that nothing has moved or almost, the mitsbishi truck being still there, parked at the same place . Still life."... C215

From Above:
""A picture is worth 1,000 words." I sat for a while considering if I should describe this piece and the multi-layered meanings depicted in the painting?! The stencil and symbolism in the painting take on some heavy current topics of social, political, and racial issues just to name a few. I decided it's best for you the viewer to interpret and look at this piece and make your decision on what you feel from it. Art has the amazing ability to be interpreted on a range of 1,000+ different meanings depending on who you ask. Some of you might find this piece offensive, constructive, ironic, or just plain stupid. I want to highly encourage all of you watching this to speak up and comment about your interpretation of this stencil and issues portrayed."

"Migration is a celebration of my Chinese and Aboriginal heritage. Both my Chinese and Aboriginal grandparents could not celebrate their cultures for fear of persecution. I feel a great responsibility to celebrate my cultures for my ancestors that lived before me. The figures are based on myself and the birds are magpies. Magpies are important symbols, for both cultures. In Aboriginal culture a magpie is a term used for a person who is a half cast (black and white parents). The magpie is a Chinese symbol of marriage and prosperity. I am blessed to be alive in this day and age where cultural diversity can be celebrated in Australia, so I created an artwork to express these feelings"... Wing

The piece above was done yesterday morning on Quai de Valmy in Central Paris by Nick Walker. It's in response to Sarkozy's decision to ban the burkha. From Nick:
"It's particularly tense in Paris. They are in between elections and the reaction is expected to be quite strong. The police discovered the piece 30 minutes after it was completed and we don't expect it to stay up long. After months of wrangling,The government are believed to be only days away from ratifying the ban."

Boxi's latest work, done in Athens, is entitled "To die for". It is part of the 2nd Athens biennial "HEAVEN".
"It's an attempt to portray the blind purity of love, and a wall of belief that can end it all. The work is a reflection upon the sad fate of two young lovers who were killed because of their love."
You can read the story behind the piece here.
The work consists of 11 hand cut life-sized greyscale layers of the stencil. To see how the piece was done watch the video below:

"On Saturday, June 6th in Chicago, local artists partnered with the Tamms Year Ten coalition to protest state-sanctioned torture at the supermax prison in Southern Illinois. And they did it with mud.
Jesse Graves, a Milwaukee artist, developed the technique and on Saturday more than 30 volunteers stenciled the message “End Torture in Illinois” on walls and sidewalks around the city, offering fact-sheets about TAMMS supermax prison to curious pedestrians.
City governments and law enforcement agencies have little precedence in dealing with mud stencils so there is a gray area on whether it is legal or not. For if it is illegal, is it also illegal for kids to write with chalk on the sidewalk? Is it illegal to build a snowman in a park or for dirt from ones garden to touch the sidewalk? And, is it illegal to stencil with mud when the rain will wash it off?
That said, none of the 30 volunteers who mud stenciled on June 6th in Chicago were arrested or even questioned by the police."

"I been doing some transparent stencil work with junk I find in the streets, I got the idea when looking into my reflection in a canal jammed full of garbage, it was quite beautiful to see myself through all the various plastic colors and products that come through me and my use, it may be high time we did some practical looking at what kind of beauty we represent and how it reflects on ourselves, true monuments are out floating somewhere in ambiguity, urban definitions are easy to use and throw away. The street reflects inevitably the land and those who can't get over its use and responsibility, man that canal stinks!!"... Ryan

We're always amazed at the effect that street art can have. The other day, the New England based artist Maki105 placed "Peek-A-Boo Jesus" on the side of a video store in New Bedford, Mass.
Yesterday, the following story ran in the Boston papers:
Lund’s Corner Jesus Draws a Crowd
By Steve Urbon / Standard-Times senior correspondent
Thursday, March 26, 2009 -
NEW BEDFORD — Tears welled up in Angela Sampaio’s eyes as she beheld the Lund’s Corner Jesus through her car windshield Wednesday, reports today’s Standard-Times.
"I am really, really, really moved by this," she said. And she wanted reassurance that the photographs of this Jesus are on the Internet. "This will be seen all over the world," she said.
She had plenty of company there in the parking lot of Premier Video, where the slightly larger-than-life depiction of the Saviour appeared on the wall sometime last weekend. In a one-hour span around noon Wednesday, at least 35 people walked or drove to the lot just to see the figure that is pasted to the white brick.
They came from miles around. They were young and old, sometimes three generations of a family in a car. There were blue-collar workers with their buddies, retirees, teenagers. They brought cameras and took pictures of each other near the figure of Christ. Some brought flowers, real and artificial, and some brought candles that flickered in their jars in the spring breeze.
(Note: Our friend tells us - "best pizza in that area is in that building, so if anyone wants to see the miracle, stop by and get a Ray's pie!")

"Welcome to the Garden of Wonders" - Few people know that there was a zoo in the heart of Montréal until 30 years ago.. At the Jardin des Merveilles, in Parc Lafontaine, you could see hippopotamus, seals, horses, bears, lamas, foxes and even an elephant. It moved to Parc Angrignon in 1989..
People who lived around the plateau at the time told me they used to see peacocks running around the streets from time to time.. WOW!
Now its become a hangout place, all kinds of people gather.. or disperse..
its the best place to get a drink and burn some grass!"

A terrific little story sent to us by Jody in London:
"A few weeks ago I went to the Cans Festival in London, I took a few pictures and put them on Flickr, including some work by Minneapolis graff artist, Broken Crow.
A day or so later, Broken Crow added some of my photos to his Flickr favorites, so I dropped him a Flickrmail, telling him how much I enjoyed the show and jokingly suggested that if he's ever in London again and needs a wall to paint, then he's welcome to paint my house.
Broken Crow asked me to send him a photo of my wall, said it was perfect and that he had a spare day between visiting relatives in London and painting some commissions in Paris. Three weeks later he's here, in my garden, with his fiancee, painting a 12x15ft mural of a cheetah.
We had a great day - the weather was perfect and I can't quite believe it happened. Proof that not all friendships made over the internet end in vampire worship and ritual suicide!
Huge thanks to Broken Crow and his fiancee - the nicest strangers I've ever met. The wall was painted on June 14, 2008."

As we speak, some of the world's most amazing stencil artists from all over the world are flying into London to create new work at an undisclosed location for the Cans Festival that will take place this weekend. Artists include Bsas Stencil, Prism, Roadsworth, Blek, Sten, Sadhu, Lex, Faile, Logan Hicks, and many, many, more. Should be an incredible event. Check back here later in the week, as the location will be announced "at the 11th hour."

From Torontoist:
"This year, a more cryptic stencil has appeared on the Humber Bay Arch Bridge, boldly proclaiming "ISBN 486-28495-6" for all to see and ponder. This International Standard Book Number turns out to be a paperback edition of Henry David Thoreau's Walden; Or, Life in the Woods.
In Walden, Thoreau wrote, "A lake is the landscape's most beautiful and expressive feature. It is earth's eye; looking into which the beholder measures the depth of his own nature."

Every night for the last two years I walk down Milwaukee Avenue between North Avenue and Division Street (in Wicker Park, Chicago) and I was lucky enough, one night, to notice that there was something new in one of the doorways. "the original picture comes from a project of the photographer (Pieter Hugo) the title of the project is (The Hyena men of Nigeria) his work is really splendid. I rework the original picture for making one of my own collage. I found that it is interesting to put this man with his hyena in a city like Paris, where it is impossible to see this kind of scene in the street, whereas to 9 hours of plane it is normal scene in the street of nigeria."

BiPed spotted this new piece yesterday in South London. While it hasn't been confirmed, it has Banksy written all over it.
BiPed writes:
"The photo is quite misleading as the stencil is actually about 9ft high -you can just make out the top of a security fence on the left."
UPDATE: A few people have emailed us to let us know that the work was not done by Banksy, but rather by the artist, Mantis.

For those who have been following the scene for a while now, the name Logan Hicks is probably quite familiar to you. If you're new to stencil art, then a terrific place to begin is to learn more about Logan's work. The two pieces above come from Logan's most recent show, The Unraveling, which opens tonight in Seattle at the BLVD Gallery in 2nd Avenue.

If you've been to Buenos Aires then you know that the city has an incredible history for political stencils. The image above is one that we thought was quite clever. It's of Juan Peron. The text says "No left wing, No right wing". The line represents Paron's political view of a third party between capitalism and socialism.
But the dotted lines for the hands give the image a double meaning, as after Paron died his grave was robbed and his hands were stolen.
"No left wing, No right wing"
(Thanks, Gonzalo)

Niko made this stencil earlier in the year on the facade of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago while he was there as an exchange student from Amsterdam last year.
His commentary reflects the sentiments of lots of artists we meet...
"people being so wound up making 'art' at art schools, made me a bit crazy. so this was for my final presentation in photoclass, not this photo though. i took them outside to show the graffiti to them. then they had a snowfight! great i liked that."

From Will:
"I was walking home from work yesterday, and I saw a bunch of small stencils on the sidewalk on Montgomery St in the Financial District (the commercial center of San Francisco, obviously). There were only two variations, but they were all over the place - sometimes 3 or 4 per block, stretching for 7 blocks or more. This morning, I took shots of several of them, some of which are above. They're obviously commemorative of 9/11, and must have been done either late last weekend or very early yesterday morning. I think they're fantastic."

From Alto-Contraste in Sao Paulo:
"The ex São Paulo´s Mayor, Paulo Maluf, that was arrested less than one year ago, for public money deviation, corruption and many other political crimes, is back to the politic spots, competing for a public job in the coming elections. It´s not enough to him to be a kind of Brazilian Berlusconi and a unpunished simbol. Now, in the usual propaganda (ilegal, we have to say) that invades the walls, he become to scramble the city graffitis. We prefer to break him down personally, but he´s that untouchable kind of people. So, we are happy to leave this "post it" at the same wall. We´re trully shamed to use our paint with this bastard´s face, but, in spite of that, it was fun. And the better thing is that we´re noting some mobilization of other graffiters in the same direction. God damned politics! be satisfied with invanding the tv (that´s already full of shit) and leave the walls for us!
Cheers for all!

"Dahyeh, August 25, 2006. one of the most bombed out areas in Beirut. I was asked by local people to paint something happy, to reflect the spirit of the community. Before starting I banged up a piece of explanatory text on the wall, for which thanks go to Ghassan for the translation into Arabic. It reads: "When Ramallah, in Palestine, is put under curfew by the Israeli Army, nobody goes outside for days. The streets look completely deserted. But from a tall building, if you look out over the city, you can sometimes see hundreds of many-coloured kites, flown from the roof-terraces by the children of Ramallah. The children you can see here are flying kites to celebrate the spirit of the people of Dahyeh. Some kites you can see are flying away. These are for the children who are no longer here; they are no longer held down to the Earth".

"did these sunflowers for an installation up at cirque du soleil here in Montreal. the idea is that they move from east to west i.e. they follow the sun. also this giant zipper which we think might just be the biggest zipper ever painted in a parking lot...ever. will have to call Guiness to get confirmation on that one. stay tuned to google earth for satellite images. shout out to the boys from urbanambush.com, Karim and Brian a.k.a. KSILK and 2YOUTH (a.k.a. the "A TEAM") for helping me out with this piece while maintaining a good sense of humour despite some gruelling 17 hour shifts. check their website for some images and anecdotes from a massive Lego construction we did a couple of weeks ago (possibly the biggest painted Lego construction ever-will have to call lego and Guiness on that one).

"Lately I have been working a bit with a couple other Albany, NY heads, Dwell and Unit. The three of us started working on a project together, and decided that while in Motreal, Quebec for the Coldcut show this past weekend, it would be a good time to give it a whirl.
We searched the streets for the spot that smelled most like urine, and decided to leave something behind to piss on. Hope you enjoy it. If you dont...well, go ahead and piss on it."

From Pure Evil in London comes a video of one of our favorite artist collectives, the amazing M-City:
I went to the Independent Arts festival in Belgium and hooked up with M-City from near Gdansk, Poland... they had HUNDREDS of HUGE stencils and made a bunch of incredible pieces there, before they drove off to paint Berlin... I was astonished at how good they were and at how much work they put into what they do... Really really impressed.. and we also had a manic session on Polish vodka and did some painting together and swapped artwork... life is sweet..."

From Roadsworth:
"This is something that was done for earth day here in Quebec. Stayed up all night with a couple of friends painting this apple tree or at least a branch thereof representing the various stages of the tree's development or at least from budding through fruit stages. Not that it would stand up to any kind of botanical rigor but you get the idea. Just as we were applying the final touches, the mayor and other political types including the leader of the Bloc Quebecois (or is it the Parti Quebecois?) showed up to plant a tree and a photo op. I had to pose for the cameras beside one of the trees in question, covered in paint, cracked out from no sleep. While no stranger to the media (here in Quebec it's not hard to get media attention-we've got our own star system here and Cruise and Holmes are not even in the top 50) this was a little much. Can we at least get some makeup over here. I've got snot smeared all over my face and it looks like I've pissed my pants (i didn't though I swear). I was just starting to break the top 100 here in Quebec but I can forget about it now."
