PROJECT BRAVE
Street Art by WK
"To commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, street artist WK collaborates with New York firefighters to create a massive street mural (100 meters long) full of passion and motion. The iconic firefighter, NY’s “bravest”, symbolizes the many heroes that helped New York survive the tragic events of 2001, and turn it into the City that inspired the whole world."

"In the wake of the 22nd anniversary of Yusuf Hawkins’ brutal murder, Gabriel Specter acts to ignite the teen’s memory, once more, in New York City’s collective consciousness.
On August 23, 1989, a racially motivated mob murdered 16-year-old Yusuf Hawkins in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn. A mural in his honor has stood in Bedford-Stuyvesant since then, but years of neglect, vandalism and aging paint have left it unrecognizable. The murder shook modern race relations in New York City and is linked to the undercurrents that sparked the Crown Heights Riots and the election of New York’s first black mayor, David Dinkins.
To honor Yusuf, Specter installed a 14 by 14 foot hand-painted portrait adorned with flowers. The placement maintains former additions by other artists and much of the original wall painted by Brooklyn master-muralist, Floyd Sapp. Often, notes are written to the deceased on memorial walls, over the years, Yusuf's mural was blanketed with scrawled messages to him and other fallen community members. Specter continues that tradition by adding to the historic wall that is once again revitalized by the memory of Yusuf Hawkins."

The other day we shared a bit about the things we do outside of Wooster Collective, and encouraged all of you to share with us something about yourself. The emails we received have been amazing and, as we near our tenth anniversary of doing the Wooster website, we wanted to share some of these stories with you...
From Loaf:
"When you asked for the readers to tell something about themselves, you know I want to say I've been checking on your blog every now and again for a long while now. I mean, I think since high school. For me that seems like a long time ago. I've since done some of the things people are supposed to do, went to college, grad school, somehow tricked people into letting me teach art all over the globe, all kinds of crazy stuff. But in the end I realize throughout it all I've always been painting, on walls, on paper, on wood, whatever! since I was like only a few years old! It's hard to believe it's been that long, and it's hard to believe I've been checking on your blog for however long it's been out there, I don't even remember, it seems like over ten years, can that be right? But I'd be lying if I said it didn't play a part in me becoming who I am. Somehow or another I'm sure you've all pushed me in the direction I'm in without even knowing about it. And I'm sure there are many others out there just like me. So, for them and me and for what it's worth, thanks! Only good things your way!"

"We recently discovered that Ron English was from Decatur, IL with him randomly showing up on Sunday night. There was a huge art happening at Donnie's Pizza. That night someone asked if he wanted to do a mural by Millikin University, and he agreed. The next day people from our community came together with him to make an awesome new popaganda mural. I gotta tell ya, finding out that he was from our town and then getting the privilege to work with him the next day, which coincidentally fell on my birthday, was to say the least amazing. Best birthday I ever had."I'd like to give a shoutout if I may to "Ron English, Jo Caulkins, Shane, Doug, Jon, Sue Powell at the Decatur Arts Council"... Lee Larkins

Regular readers of the Wooster website already know that we've been huge fans of Sten and Lex's for many years. And their latest project done in KØGE, Denmark as part of the Walk This Way festival, is one of the most ambitious and impressive street art projects we've seen.
At 700 square meters, we imaging that it's also one of the largest stencils ever created.
In the video below you can see how the created it, over a 20 day period...

It's now became clear that Banksy has indeed been spending some quality time in Hollywood.
Early this morning actress Lauren Conrad (The Hills) was the first to spot and tweet out one of the new Banksy street pieces - the Crayon Boy.
Then later this afternoon, a second piece featuring Charlie Brown (shown above) was also spotted.
More to come?

"Your move
There is one thing - the only one to be totally sure about: everything will eventually disappear.
The city, the streets, the buildings, even we ourselves and our children.
The time will pass and the piers of this grand bridge will go shaky, fall down, fold as domino row.
This basically means, if things are not eternal - and there are no eternal things - we can change them as we want.
Everyone has something unshakable, unchangeable, but it is not true.
Last move is always yours.

"I've tried something a little different. My inspiration came on hearing Jeff Buckley cover an aria. Opera not regularly on my playlist, the more I heard the more I realized the story would suit the places I usually work in. Was a strange process but stoked on completing it.
The process was pretty interesting, throughout the pieces randoms were bringing in friends to see it and I caught the security guards too. The factory where it's taped really feels like when the wall came down so too the workers - workbooks, coffee mugs, jackets all still in place."... Buff Diss

From Faith47:
"the wall that i painted in cape town recently was sponsored by the british council. the image was inspired by a picture that alexia webster took in macassar, cape town...
of protesters, women, children, men and the elderly... "backyarders" - families who live in back yards because there is no space or housing available or provided by the state. they had taken over an empty piece of land in protest...
here's an article from the day she took the photo.
i also chose this location because it has a certain resonance to it. as it is where the protesters gather before they march to parliament."

"Growing up as a first generation Australian with parents from Northern Ireland meant that I would watch the violence between nationalist and loyalist factions in the region from a distance. This work is heavily influenced by the large Militant Murals painted by the IRA and UFF which make up my first memories of public art from my childhood. The painting explores how ancient mythology, religion, land and folklore helped create pride amongst Irish-catholic communities when faced with poverty, conflict and gentrification. The piece aims to evoke a sense of loss, hope and renewal while highlighting the absurdities of war."... Fintan Magee

I didn't know before, i saw them a lot inside when i was painting, and they were watching me sometimes, almost hidden in darkness, they seemed lost. They went outside only when i left, to watch the painting on the wall of their...... house. This area was so strange, people were atypical and very eclectic."... Liliwenn.

"Here is our latest wall. This time my friend Paris Koutsikos and I had the pleasure to collaborate with the 73 years old Greek painter Andonis Kyriakoulis. Andonis had never done a mural before and at this age it would be a bit risky to climb on the crane and paint directly on the wall. So the wheatpaste was a sort of comfortable solution. The piece writes (actually demands) "Mάσα, Ξάπλα, Τέμπελιά" which can be somehow translated as "Eat, Sleep and Shit"... Alexandros Vasmoulakis

"A "fan" emailed me detailing how I was ruining her son's life because my pieces around town had inspired her son to want to be, wait for it, an artist! I hope they both see this and it furthers his downward spiral into creativity and expressionism.
Also included a new angel. I had to outrun the rain across town to put this up. As soon I had finished the last portion a lightening bolt lit up the night and the sky fell out and started pouring. Call it divine intervention or dumb luck, it was magical." ... Priest

Going through our email box just now we came across the image above, sent to us by someone in Detroit earlier in the week... the piece also obviously also done by Banksy.
Having a child now of our own (Samantha) we're really digging this series of child drawings that Banksy is doing in cities across America. We can only hope there's more to come.
Posted by marc at 2:49 PM in Walls |
It's been amazing to see how Banksy's road trip across North America has completely energized local communities in San Francisco, Detroit, Chicago, Toronto, and now Boston.
For us, Banksy has given people a new reason to get out of their homes, explore their cities on a scavenger hunt trying to find pieces that have been put up in both heavily trafficked areas as well as those off the beaten path. It's been a shame that these pieces have not lasted longer in the public, but I guess that comes with the territory.
The piece above appeared this morning in Boston as did the image below (first shown on Bostonist)

From Ripo: "This new big wall is from an abandoned hotel near Barcelona. This place was not Historic and I can't say about the piece itself. It's simply a commentary on the act of painting and putting in time and effort at a forgotten and abandoned place, unquestionably giving it a history that is new and unique."

"This year was a really "baby boom" in my little circle of friends... I got really touched more than one time when I had this nice surprise hearing that a big friend was becoming a father/mother... That really inspired me in a production of a serie of graffiti attacks called "my little playground", that is all about kids playing arround.
I´m sending some photos of my last one as my christmas card so we can share this love with all the childrens of our lives and for the children that whe have inside as well...:) This piece is a special tribute to love and it´s dedicated to Lola, Bruna, Marti y Lluc, Theo, Miguel, Antonio Laudo, Pedro, Gustavo e Eduardo, Vitória, Violeta, Antonio Pedro, Beatriz and all kids of your friends too!" First one: with a girl that makes everything you can imagine with crochet. And the second one with my mother. She is recycling materials around the house to build headdresses for my surmas. She is a regular spanish housewife ,that is beginning to discover street art because she wants to understand what her daughter does in life. ;)"

Wes writes:
"I live in Birmingham, AL and while there is not a lot of street art we sometimes receive a gift like this. Nn 1978 a mural was painted on the side of this building and it stayed that way until a few months ago when realtors decided they wanted to rent the building. DAZE and ROKE (both bham artists), and PRIEST (of Mobile, AL) a few days ago did the piece below showing the kid peeling off the paint to once again reveal the mural underneath."
UPDATED:
From John Morse, the photographer who shot the original photo:
"I'd like to add a bit of information to the article posted this morning about the work of DAZE, ROKE and PRIEST in Birmingham. The original mural, entitled "Geo-Chromatic Progress" was painted in 1978 by Michael Mojher, now living in Orlando, Florida. It was part of the Birmingham Mural Project, an 18-month campaign to enliven downtown walls with the cooperation of underemployed artists. The project was funded by the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act and administered by the Greater Birmingham Arts Alliance."

From NEU BLACK comes these photos of Entitled the Knight, a terrific new collaboration between RETNA and The Mac in Baldwin Hills, CA. They write:
"This new collaboration embodies Los Angeles culture with delicate precision. RETNA’s signature typography flanks the portrait with pensive Spanish prose to the left and an excerpt from Marvin Gay’s “What’s Goin’ On” to the right, and finally tipping the brim of the hat with the inscription “Only Love Can Conquer Hate.”
The Mac is no stranger to intricate shading techniques and stoic portraiture. Much of his most recent work plays with topographical and moire patterns in fine detail. Here he’s utilized a circulating moire technique giving this striking figure an almost relaxed intensity"

From DAN:
"After the opening of a new multi-million pounds mall in the city centre of Bristol. All the areas around have been proclaimed “no street drinking zone” giving the homeless people and the local street drinkers no choices but to leave the area. As a result of this, the number of street drinkers is considerably increased in deprived areas where the drinking ban is not so strictly enforced."

"Here's a piece i did this week in Ljubljana in Slovenia. I did this in Metelkova which is an area where artists with great philosophies squatted a while back and turned it into their own creative spot ruled by anarchy giving the city an alternative habitat. the figure is running out of Metelkova heading towards the train station and taking with him a trail of paint which crosses the street from this special place out towards the rest of the world"

URBAN PAINTING is an amazing street art show managed by the municipality of Carugate and curated by Luigi Mauri and his wife Tatiana Belluzzo. Similar to our 11 Spring show, the idea of Urban Painting was to do a great street art show without any sponsors for two days with no advertising. Inside at ATRION IN CARUGATE original artwork from more than 35 artists around the worlld was displayed.

"When the entire world was looking to UUEE politics changes with fear & hope, I had try to do my own tribute to the big American (pop) culture. Maybe this is only a parody to the most famous Disney character. But I like to think that this is a critical parody of the manichean society that only difference two types of people, or things or ways, the evil one and the good one. Maybe this mickey it´s celebrating the Obama's victory in the way he likes, getting absolutely drunk until brain dead. Or maybe he is a victim of the world economic crisis situation, and he just have lost his work.

The photos above have been sitting in our email box since November of last year. But we like them so much we wanted to make sure we shared them with you. To create these paintings Ryan Dooley rigged up a fishing pole and an iron bar to use spraycans at a fifteen foot height using a long string and a lot of scotch tape. The objective was to paint a series of bridges above passing traffic, covering a span of 40 feet.

From RIPO:
"Si Ves Algo Di Algo" (If You See Something Say Something) is the phrase made infamous by the NYC transit authority, aka the MTA. To the MTA that means spy on your neighbor and report everything and anyone you suspect may be a terrorist or a threat to the security of the norm. I prefer to see the meaning of that phrase as a reminder to us to keep our eyes open and react to and interact with our evironments in positive ways. Taking back a sinister and Big Brother-esque phrase and turning it into something that speaks to people as a positive thing rather than a negative.
Freedom of Public Space, Freedom for our Eyes. Painted in the Gracia neighborhood in Barcelona, Spain.

After leaving New Orleans, it appears that Banksy is now heading through the Deep South.
The piece below was spotted on an old abandoned Chevron Station near Birmingham Alabama. (We're told it's somewhere between where the 59 Freeway meets the 65 going South near a large Home Depot on the 59)
(Note: As of now, the one photo below is all that exists, so if you're in the area and see the piece, let us know and send us some snaps)

"Jorge Rodriguez-Gerada transforms common people into icons by rendering them in charcoal as urban murals. By questioning the controls imposed on public space, the role models that represents us in the public space and the type of events that are guarded by the collective memory he breaks preconceptions of where art is permitted, when art is needed and to whom it is directed. Documentary created by Ana Alvarez-Errecalde and FILMCHICK PRODUCTIONS."

"The piece is called Daydream of the faceless worker. It is about 6x14 meters and made up of 4000 post-it notes. I wrote poetry on about 400. They had told me that the wall was half the size. My idea then was to let people take what they liked and have pens around, so that they could add their own thoughts to the empty notes. Now it became too big, the notes are too far up for people to write on unfortunately.
I estimate that I banged the wall about 12000 times putting them all up. My palm still hurts four days later.
I’ve had the idea for a long time so it was nice to finally be able to do it. Working in an office environment is so depressing, daydreaming is the savior… building ladders of paper clips or post-it note wings is the only way to escape…"
