“Five on Five” with Captain

/>Captain Rouget: Cars are a big part of your universe. Can you
tell us why you have such a fascination wtih this?

St. arsky:
As you may know, I’m a big fan of the Starsky & Hutch car. Not because
it is a nice car, but for its whole universe that reminds me my youth. I also
love it because of its punchy basic design. In the whole world, a red car with a
white stripe is associated with Starsky & Hutch. It’s almost become a logo that
talks to every body. (it rings a bell with every body.) The car’s universe is
really far from what I like, but all that fascinates people and mainly what I
don’t understand is interesting to me. I am not into this car stuff, and even
less into all this tuning fashion. But this movement is really interesting by
all it’s aggressive aesthetic designs and its “as been” spirit. (as been means
loser spirit.)

Captain Rouget: Should we call you
Starsky or ST. arsky ?

St. arsky: As you wish, but I
like St. Arsky to brake away from the TV show and from the zebra3 car. It gives
a renewal to the name like a neon or a gigantic spoiler to a car. it is like
tuning.  it is useless but it is obviously megalomaniac.

/>Captain Rouget: Red wine or beer? (or maybe both?)

/>St. arsky: Red wine for sure. But beer too. Mainly when we
are together my friend.

Captain Rouget: Blonde or
brune?

St. arsky: Just one girl.

/>Captain Rouget: A lot of projects are poping up everywhere
those days… Lots of magazines and exhibitions ... Do you have any opinion on
this? If not, please tell us how to repair a car battery.

St.
arsky:
I am quite satisfied with it, as I am also for the buff and for
advertising. All those fancies are making up going forward. To sum up what I
have in mind, I will quote a sentence from a French hip hop band IAM ( yeah I
know this ain’t stylish.) ( note from the translation: On an ironic tone ) ”
Yeah bro, Keep it undergound. underground you’ll be, underground you’ll
stay.”

St. arsky: Whose Captain would be closer to
the spirit of your creations? Captain America or Captain Caveman?

/>Captain Rouget: Well even if I like old school semic comics,
I definetly am closer to Captain Caverne as long as am a little bit rude (and
you know what am talking about ... don’t you stask?) and am fucking hairy…
/>
St. arsky: The liquid element (sea, beer, wine, vomit,
girl’s secretions) is really present in your creations and your universe. Can
you tell us why?

Captain Rouget: Well I am a
captain. My life is made of sailing the seven seas I got cheappy cheap wine
flooding my veins, beer is stabilizing my brain and vomit might be the
conclusion of it all (sick sad world.). Anyway, sea is also a cool element to
dig a whole creative universe around. piratas del estilo! all return to the
sea.

St. arsky: Your style is really close to a
cartoon universe. Are you a fan of the 8th art? And if the answer is yes, can
you tell us about your 3 best comics of this past year?

/>Captain Rouget: Yeah i love Cartoon, for sure…  my best of
2003?

href="http://www.bulledair.com/catalogue/lincoln2.gif">Lincoln. The guys who
made this western cartoon have understood everything about making a good comic.
the narration, the style. and the story. a fucking good alchemy.

href="http://www.lambiek.net/winshluss.htm">Winschluss Pat Boon Happy End
because I like his skills and his sense of humor.

Le combat
ordinaire from Larcenet is a nice one too. but there are too many good stuff to
make a choice in few minutes.

St. arsky: Do you
think post graffiti “street art”  is a fashion that will come to an end soon? Or
will it goe deeper in our urban universe.? What are your main references in this
game?

Captain Rouget: Fashion is an eternal turn
over ... And at the moment it drains tons of guys into it. On one hand I am
happy that this underground stuff became more closer to people… to see so many
creative guyz playing around the streets with all surfaces they can find, with
or without a message. but at the same time, and as something get fashionable. it
gets on my nerves… i dunno how to explain that ( generally when underground
becomes somehow a source of fashion it generally pisses people up no ?). On the
other end it is really cool to see that urban stuff which was shown as the black
sheep, being now under the spotlight. the graphic design universe opened it’s
doors and now we don’t need no school to be part of it.

Concerning
references, when i started over there was only graffiti. I was really fond of
PCP’s work ( n?6, popay ... ) some mode 2. Then i grew up tired of the “YO HIP
HOP RAP TAG!” style and thanks to V3ga who showed me lot of magazines; focused
my interest on people like RCF1 ( who was a “pioneer” according to me ) the MOAS
and closer to my region, all the guys from Bordeaux who really made a great job
breaking old school graffiti rules…(toxo, bart, sobre, pum, NA, NO.). In
Bordeaux they still rock da house. TTcrew for exemple !

Then came the
giant. i really like a lot what is done actually in the streets. so much
creativity (as you can use every thing. not only a spray! ), good styles, and
fucking good spirit. (I can tell now that I have met a lot of those crazy
reprezenters in Barcelona ).
