Coats of Paint…. An Explanation From Evoke

/>“This is a photo of a coat by my friend Daser. It was part of a homelessness
clothing project that 15 of us up here in the coldest capital city in the world
organized last winter.
Basically we rounded up as many parkas and
bubble gooses we could find and distributed them to our friends to paint. We
then got the coats back and sewed little tags in all of them stating that they
were a part of a project “coats of paint”, and if the new owner of the coat
liked, he/she could call the number on the tag and recieve a coupon for 50$ from
the grocery store in return for the coat. (we hooked up the coupons in advance)
We then hit the streets with armfulls of coats and gave them out to people who
were freezing.
The coat painted by Daser moved me in a way I cannot
fully explain.
It made the entire project worthwhile because I knew
the state of mind he was in while he was handed this project.
It
wasn’t going to put food on the table or paint on the brushes but he still
turned out this wonderful thing .... a life saver for Canada’s -43 C days .... a
gesture that made the man who enherited it proud to be alive and gave me faith
that art could do amazing things.”
