Los Angeles | March 13 | Transforms

Millicent Gallery is proud to present Transforms featuring the photographic work of David Meanix, Jorge Gonzalez and JB Ghuman, Jr. These three rising stars of the art photography world each explore shifting identities, perceptions and realities though their startlingly individual lenses.

The intense colors and moody tone of Jorge Gonzalez’s “story board” series invites the viewer into the surreal world of his subconscious, each piece a chapter in a story with no end. Inspired by dreams, these images are explorations of his psyche that create a parallel world of illusion that leads us “towards the within.”

David Meanix’s photo-sculptures meticulously re-contextualize his subjects. Using a highly labor intensive process, Meanix forms papier mache “photographic sculptural masks” that veil, alter or transform the subject’s original identity. These mosaic portraits are then re-photographed in completely new surroundings revealing hidden personas and new identities. Each enigmatic portrait questions the roles we play, the masks we wear and asks: “When is it safe to show our true selves?”

Using photography manipulated with crayon and computer graphics, JB Ghuman, Jr. conveys the meaning beneath the image. Through self-portraits and studio models, Ghuman’s bold use of color and text forces us to consider the meaning beneath the beauty, to see things not just as they are but for their essence. What appears at first glance is radically shifted to another truth with bold strokes of color and graffiti-like scrawls of text.

Beautiful Losers is an exhibition of multi-media art and design that explores 30 years worth of work by a diverse group of visual artists that have emerged from aspects of the street culture loosely organized around the subcultures of skateboarding, graffiti, punk, and hip-hop. The exhibit includes painting, sculpture, and photography, as well as film, video, and product design by these individuals, among others.

To complement this material, the exhibition will also offer an environmental soundscape that traces the relationship between these subcultures and various genres of popular music, compiled by former professional skateboarder and musician Tommy Guerrero; a selection of ephemeral materials (album covers, skateboard decks, toys, zines, etc.) produced in or related to this milieu; and a film and video program to be screened within the exhibition itself.

The exhibition is being organized in collaboration with its founders Christian Strike and Aaron Rose, of Iconoclast, the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati; and the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco. It will open in Cincinnati in March 12-13, 2004 and in San Francisco in July of 2004. A fully illustrated 272-page book published by Iconoclast and distributed by D.A.P. will accompany the exhibition.
