"This latest piece, "The Death of Death" was put up in Dublin in early September (w/Anewspace/Dublin Contemporary) during Suicide Awareness Week. These days we're continuing to explore the idea of the urban theater--the street as a stage. Also doing a lot of workshops, the most recent in Tashkent, teaching people this idea of using their body to make self-replicas to put out into public space."... Mark Jenkins

Also, if you're in New York City this November, be sure to check out Pictoplasma NYC, a terrific two day conference which celebrates contemporary character culture, including illustration, graphic design, game design, fashion, art and robotics. Sara and I will be giving a lecture (along with Mark Jenkins, who's featured above) on Friday, November 4th. You can find the full line-up of speakers here.

From Snyder:

To celebrate Vincent Van Gogh's birthday, I dressed up the controversial Cardiff Kook sculpture as Van Gogh.

A severed ear, Absinthe bottle, sunflowers and card are at the base. The statue is decked out in full costume and an easel was welded to fit on the nose of the board. I painted the painting of the view from the sculpture in a post impressionism style.

In addition, 6 paper mache crows are scatted around the sculpture and in the intersection.

Hope you raise a glass to Vincent!"

Artist Statement from La Bolleur:

Balloon Animals

This time we blew it.

This summer the city of Eindhoven asked La Bolleur to make something happen in the city centre. It was a nice opportunity to realize an idea that had been going through our heads for a while already. We upscaled balloon animals to monstrous proportions that were hardly manageable. Making it happen turned out to be as much fun as the end result.

Upcoming Dutch Design Week La Bolleur would like to celebrate its 5 year anniversary.
Come and visit our overview exhibition. And have a drink with us!"

From Bert in Copenhagen:

"Over a year ago I started placing my work into the public urban landscape. Of great importance was that I used a form of wood already found on the street and make the work pertinent to its surroundings. My objective was to bring sculpture to a new and unorthodox framework: common road works. I carve 100x100mm timber used in the barricades surrounding almost all road works/ building sites in Copenhagen.
In the middle of the temporary and unsightly mess, where one would not normally expect an artistic experience, I plant my hand carved and painted wooden sculpture. The incongruity should provoke a smile and some bafflement for the viewer and I hope that the carvings will help alleviate the irritation of congestion and hindrance these work areas create."

Artist Statement from Isaac Cordal:

Cement eclipses is a research project about the urban space, in-between sculpture
and photography. Sculpture is used as a starting point and photography as a witness
to the execution of installations for later publishing or exhibition. The small
pieces (25 cm. approx.) are made in cement, then reproduced with silicone molds. The
figurines represent a kind of metamorphosis through which human being leaves his
role of citizen merging with the city and slowly becoming part of urban furniture.
Then confirming its voluntary isolation/alienation from nature, hiding himself among
sidewalks, streets, walls, etc. and transforming little by little the urban
environment in its natural habitat.

This project started in 2006 as a nomad project and as a continuous process, combining urban installation and street art. Cement eclipses was developed in urban
areas of several European cities including Berlin, London, Brussels, Liege,
Barcelona, Vigo, etc. Most of the photographs in this dossier have been realised in
London, where I currently reside, between September 2008 and January 2009.

Jason De Caires Taylor’s latest underwater installation is now being installed in Cancun, Mexico. When fully finished in 2011, it’s by far and away going to be Jason’s most ambitious project yet, making it the largest underwater sculpture park in the World.

Jason has just positioned the first 3 sculptures of the project and the team is now underway creating 400 life size figures for ‘The Silent Evolution’. The 400 pieces will form a timeline of the changes both visually and socially in humans over the past centuries.

All of Jason De Caires Taylor’s sculptures for Mexico will be placed within the National Marine Park of Cancun, Isla Mujeres and Nisuc and are designed to form an artificial reef. They will be the basis for the World’s largest Underwater Art Museum.

The first pieces, seen above, are entitled La Jardinera de la Esperanza (The Gardener of Hope), Coleccionista de los Sueños (The Archive of Lost Dreams), and Hombre en Llamas (Man on Fire).

The second phase currently in progress is entitled; La Evolucion Silenciosa (The Silent Evolution).

"Tribus is a sculptural tag, a mass-produced object for the street. It is a work with such a strong and direct shape and color language that a signature is unnecessary. The expression is the signature and the link between the art pieces. The ambition is to get a direct contact with the viewer. Tribus wants the viewer to experience it´s intervention in the public space as something positive. Using sculpture in this context overcomes some of the obstacles that Graffiti/Street art meets where the viewer classifies the artworks as sabotage even before the visual contact. Getting people sympathetic to this project teases them to like something illegal, Something they normally would condemn. Tribus take its right without having the power. This project strives not to answer any questions but want people to ask them.

Who owns the city

Who owns art"

If you're in London, for the last couple of months you may have noticed mysterious gold bars that have been sited in various spots around town. Turns out that they've been placed there by Paul Insect. On Sunday he left a pile of 51 bars on Old Street roundabout, there until last night - gone this morning. Each bar and the pallet they're sitting on are signed by Paul with the line 'if you have me I was stolen'. We're told that the message is a comment on the "'liberating/stealing' of street art both physically and theoretically."

If you're not familiar with Paul's work, check out his upcoming show at the Lazarides Gallery. We've been fans for years.

Paul has a show opening later this month - http://www.lazinc.com/exhibitions/future/

Nick Georgiou's meticulously hand stitched newspaper sculptures continue to blow our mind. He seems to be taking them to another level, giving them movement and integrating them into the environment. For us, Nick and Mark Jenkins - along with Brad Downey, Leon Reid, and Prune, are the absolute best "urban sculptors" working on the streets today.

The latest project from Leon Reid (aka Darius Jones) is called "The Pursuit of Knowledge" .

For the project, Leon worked alongside the students of Intermediate School 52 in Inwood NYC, helping each of them make life-sized duplicates of themselves from a combination of pvc pipe, newspaper and tape. School uniforms were then added to complete the effect.

After the sculptures were done, Leon then installed them on the ceiling of the main hallway. The theme of the piece is to promote an aggressive desire to learn with the students crawling around in pursuit of books..

The project was sponsored by Creative Arts Workshops for Kids (C.A.W.) and The School Based Health Clinic.

From Zworkt:

"well, i could spawn a story about my frustrations of the Christmas spirit, about the masses of people herding around buying things, wishing each other things, and how in the end every person is locked up in him/herself. But in the end i just found a piece of chickenfence which i turned into a woman holding her child. I just wanted to make a wrapped up man to sit on our couch (which sits there now). I liked making it so much that i made more. Not very much meaning and everything, apply your own thoughts. I guess I like the way it pictures some way of a nesting instinct and how that is eating some of my friends."

On a side note, the piece stood there for about two days and then was kicked to death by some children.

Agnieszka is a 28 year old artist living in Poznań, Poland. She works at the Academy of Arts in Poznań as an assistant in the graphics workshop. Recently she wanted to place her work in a public space because, as she says, "it is the most honest form of artistic dialog."

She told us - "Śródka is one of the city's neighborhoods. Forgoten and deserted. Wondering through the streets of this neighborhood I found a hidden and forgotten courtyard. Extremely small (around 6m2), as if squeezed between tall, dark walls of houses. The place is very small, claustrophobic and filled with voices of pigeons. Frightening and in the same time charming, like taken out from a different world. In one of the corners I placed my white sculpture of a little girl. She was facing the wall with her face hidden in her hands as if she was playing "hide and seek".
I believe that this work had good response especially from from local society. It gave a lot of joy to local children. That was something! The atmosphere of this little court yard was amazing and I like to think that this little girl was already there, I just gave her a shape and form..."
