Shitmouth Peasant - An Explanation

src="http://www.woostercollective.com/images/mouth.jpg">

One
of the things that we love about street art is that so much of it makes sense
only to the artist, or perhaps the artist and a small group of friends. And
because of this it makes it all the more intriguing. The other day we received
an email with flicks from a series of posters that all had the same simple
phrase - “shitmouth peasant.”  Intrigued, we emailed the artist to ask exactly
what the “shitmouth peasant” meant.  Here’s his response (which we absolutely
loved):

“well shitmouth originated as a commonality from our friends
that everytime we tried to get our voice heard we would be censored or not put
on a plateau where others would gain recognition. so in relation we would like
to speak for the ones who aren’t being fully represented and recognized in a way
that we think they should be. for example mumia abu jamal, martin luther king,
jfk, subcomandante marcos and so on…  now peasant came from that all of us
come from either a working class or lower class background. from our own
experiences these classes in the american society suffer a lot to just get a
meal on the table or to support their families. we basically struggle. and so we
would like to say we are called peasants. so shitmouth peasant represents a
working class person (peasant)  thats not being heard (shitmouth).  we are a
conglomerate of friends that post up around the central valley of california. so
our work is around stockton, sacramento, modesto, and surrounding cities. we are
sometimes up in the bay area in cities like oakland or sf. and when we have time
we like to do stuff in southern california and mexico. “
