sighn - The A’s to Our Q’s:

Wooster: How did you get started
in creating art for the street?

sighn: to heal. i
started doing dedications when i was so filled with emotions, i couldn’t contain
myself any longer. those intense adrenaline rushes that shake us to the
core…or freeze us in our tracks. i wanted to find a way to give these emotions
away. to let them go. with the hope that others would come across these
dedications and find some type of solace.

Wooster:
Why sighn?

sighn: i sigh a lot. really. completely &
absolutely frustrated with the human condition of hate,  selfishness, and
violence. i have huge qualms with those who have no self confidence or feel
broken and worthless. self pity is the most destructive thing i have ever
encountered. and these
dedications are basically signs. you can figure out
the rest.

Wooster: What other street artists do you
most admire and why?

sighn: socially consicious
individuals or groups—jenny
holtzer and her truisms
// href="http://www.moma.org/exhibitions/1997/dannheisser/gonzalez_torres.html">fel
ix gonzalez-torres
and his href="http://www.creativetime.org/torres/felix_intro.html">billboards, who
stated “I am a person who lives in this society and I am a product of this
society and this culture. I am not only a reflection, I am that culture itself ”
// gillian wearing with
her ‘signs that say what you want them to say and not signs that say what
someone else wants you to say’ // href="http://www.tfaoi.com/aa/1aa/1aa667.htm">barbara kruger who coined ‘i
shop therefore i am’ // vinnie ray’s href="http://vinnieray.com/NewFiles/Street.html">posters and stickers // and
locally, cody hudson //
chris silva // and href="http://you-are-beautiful.com/">you are beautiful are doing some really
incredible work.

Wooster: What’s your favorite city,
neighborhood, or block, to post and/or to see street art?

/>sighn: nyc is of course a mecca of street art, with new
stuff popping up constantly around every corner.  always incredible to visit.
nothing really lasts that long in chicago. it’s refreshing to walk the metra
tracks to see the graffitti on the old warehouses, and occasionally something
new busted out.

as far as my work, it’s a mix. i do hit the busiest
spots, where it will be seen by many, but have a short shelf life. i prefer to
hit more hidden spots, where it will last longer, and only a few might happen
across it. but the impact will be much more personal & reflective.

i
have recently been wandering around with sharpie in hand, writing little quotes.
‘i keep others out’ was written on a 2x4 nailed across a doorway. this is the
only one i’ve documented—i feel more free to leave little notes, and not look
back. seems more sincere to me.

Wooster: What
inspires you now?

sighn: anyone who just goes for
it and doesn’t look back. when it’s obvious they could care less what anyone
thought or said. they just did it for them—for the sheer fact that they had to
do it—they couldn’t help it. when you’re stopped in your tracks, and holy
shit
. escapes your mouth. that indescribable feeling of awe and inspiration
with a touch of jealousy. this is the most recent href="http://sighn.net/heildelberg.html">jawdropper i’ve encountered.
/>
Wooster: What are you currently working on? Can you
give us a sneak peek?

sighn: i was recently invited
to be a part of the workhorse
collective
. I uploaded a few pics into my href="http://workhorsevisuals.com/phpBB2/album_personal.php?user_id=25">gallery

<
/a>

.

for my next body of work, i have opened up my sketchbooks, and
am going to release a series entitled ‘be that as it may.’ i’ll spend this
winter cutting, and when the weather gets warm again, i’ll hit the streets with
some new dedications, statements, and tributes. loading up and getting ready to
unleash.
