LACMA Set to Destroy Works by McGee and Kilgallen

From Tyler Green
comes word that in the coming weeks the Los Angeles Contemporary Museum of Art
will be destroying an amazing collection of art that exists in the museums
parking garage. Included in the “gallery beneath the museum” are fantastic works
by such artists as Barry McGee, Margaret Kilgallen, and many others. The sad
thing is that the museum is going to destroy the work, rather than find a way to
preserve it. It’s amazing that they don’t recognize the work of McGee and
Kilgallen, while galleries like Deitch are selling their work at extremely high
prices.

As Tyler says on his weblog - “If chunks of the Berlin Wall
can be saved, I don’t know why the McGees/Kilgallens in the LACMA garage can’t
be. They should be.”

So far the only people to complain about LACMA’s
decision to detroy the pieces are href="http://www.laweekly.com/ink/05/49/features-leopold.php"> Shelly Leopold of
the LA Weekly
, href="http://www.artsjournal.com/man/archives20051101.shtml#103495">Tyler,
and now us.

Hopefully LACMA will reconsider, as the McGee pieces,
origitnally done in October 2000 for the the “Made in California” show.
