"The Urban Speaker is an art installation that transforms public space into an instant stage for mass communication. This portable urban furniture allows people to broadcast their voice in public by calling a telephone number from their mobile phones.

The Urban Speaker resembles construction signage and blends in with its urban surroundings. It consists of a tripod with an amplified loudspeaker, smartphone, battery and a traffic sign. The signage instructs passersby to dial a phone number to speak in public. Users who place the call get an automatic answer and can speak their mind for sixty seconds after which the call is terminated. A QR (Quick Response) barcode on the sign allows some mobile phones to instantly access the urbanspeaker.mobi website for location, event and other details as well as quick dialing of the installation’s phone.

The project explores the possibilities of “urban media spaces” created by the introduction of telecommunication and interactive technologies into our built environments. Temporary interventions such as this seek to re-imagine what our personal and social experience of public spaces can be in an age of ubiquitous nonstop communication.

Urban Speaker will premiere during the Conflux 2010 festival of psycho-geography in New York City. The installation can be viewed on Friday October 8th from 3pm-7pm in Tompkins Square Park, on the 7th St side between Avenues A & B.

Event Name: Urban Speaker
Event Type: Outdoor Art Installation / Participatory Performance / New Media

From Prune:

The Procreative Dinner is based on the idea of a child «à la carte», and creates a reflection about how the new techniques of assisted procreation lead us to an artificial evolution of the human being through selection.

The artist associates her art to a chef étoilé and a specialized scientist and designs a meal around a «clinical process» – which moved through all stages of child conception, from in-vitro fertilization to choosing the sex of the child.

During this dinner, spectator becomes an integral part of the happening. He is ‘procreative’ because he creates, from cocktail to dessert and following step by step an assisted conception, his “perfect child”.

The first Procreative Dinner took place in June 2009 in Paris with the wellknown biologist Jacques Testart and the culinary designer Julie Rothhahn."

"the free bouncy rides are going pretty good. of course giving them on the subway platforms in the summer heat is tough but the smiles i see on the people's faces and the pictures that i get keep me going for the hour. needless to say i stink pretty bad when i get home with the soaked mascot costume.

my brand new project, the "candy crack delivery service", is a new thing where i personally hand deliver a 100 % sugar fake crack rock to people's houses in the brooklyn areas of williamsburg and greenpoint. i'm going to be doing it twice a month on the weekend. i make the crack from broken sugar cubes and then color and flavor them with snow cone syrup and then drop them in a little crack bag which goes for $1
per bag.

the first delivery I had last weekend was very scary because I didn't know what to expect. i burst in the guy's front door and started running around his apartment like a stunned boxer or a scared bee. i rushed the sale and got out of there as soon as i could. later i realized how weird i acted and laughed. later in the evening i got a second call to a party where i delivered some candy crack to a couple girls. they were cool and i think we're going to become friends. the next time i'm doing it is Saturday August 8th.".... Earlier this evening, Sara and I stopped by the opening of Nick Cave's (not the musician) new exhibition of "soundsuits" at the Jack Shainman Gallery in Chelsea. If you're not familiar with Nick's work, watch the videos below. The suits are something that you have to see firsthand, as they're absolutely stunning. We were blown away.

Instant Grant Program from Steve Lambert on Vimeo.

Last night Charlie Todd told us about a new project from Steve Lambert called The Federation of Students and Nominally or Unemployed Artists.

The other day the group set up a table in New York's Union Square and gave away “instant grants” to those people who pitched them projects.

From the Federation's website:

How It Works

We all learn art in school. Every kid loves to draw at some point. People get fascinated with the details of their new camera, or spend free time writing poems. But eventually, there’s a not a teacher telling you how great your are, or the camera gets put away, or you just plain get busy and stop. Years could go by before you start again, if you ever do at all.

The FSNUA aims to re-inspire creative thinking and action in everyday people by removing a small barrier and providing encouragement. We give small, unsecured grants in the form of $10-$60 for creative projects thought up on the spot by everyday people. In the past this has included a merchant marine, two 10 year old girls, a US soldier on leave from Iraq, an accordion player from Alaska, and around 40 others. We funded their new paintings, drawings, knitting, and photojournalism projects, and the repair of one accordion. Projects that may not have happened had they not come across 10 people in the park to support and inspire the thought.

Beyond the small amount of money, the project encourages people to see themselves as something other than workers or consumers even if it just for the length of time required to apply for the FSNUA grant. We also hope to re-inspire dormant desires to create while presenting an example of generosity without an ulterior motive.

From Designboom:

art director willi dorner and photographer lisa rastl have collaborated on two project combining humans in odd formations and unusual locations. ‘hängende gärten’ and ‘bodies in urban spaces’ both set out to explore the “relationship between body, space and architecture”. the urban based series was created as a set of human sculptures which were spread throughout the city of vienna. the artist has effectively transformed the human body into form, a complete reversal from the classical convention of creating the human form from a material.
