Los Angeles | September 27 | This Is Your God

This fall, sixspace is proud to host This is Your God, a significant exhibition of new works by Shepard Fairey. Featuring a massive installation, an assault wall of prints, and silk-screened works on wood, metal, and record sleeves, This is Your God depicts the value and act of obedience as the common denominator for religious, political, and financial facets of idolization. The gallery will also debut four limited edition fine art screen prints on 100% cotton rag archival paper. In support of this show, Fairey will be creating a 9 x 13 foot billboard at the intersection of Sunset and Hollywood across from the Vista Theater in Los Angeles.

"The dollar is worth exactly what you are willing to give in order to get it. Obedience is the most valuable currency.” Shepard Fairey

The exhibition title is derived from the Sci-Fi cult classic They Live that projected a future in which aliens had come to earth not to conquer, but to exploit by controlling the world through bribes, subliminal messages, and deception. As a comment to how our contemporary advertising and commodity structure works, Fairey has created a new body of work that details the explosion of commercialism in our society, including the references to how our we put celebrities, politicians, etc. onto pedestals. Through this exhibition, he mimics and parodies these ideas.

Fairey, well known for his Obey propaganda art project campaign (a.ka. Andre the Giant has a Posse) has had renowned exhibitions worldwide for the past decade. Recent exhibitions include LaBase, Paris, a solo exhibition in Australia, along with domestic shows in California, New York, Texas, and Detroit. He has also given lectures at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Grafill/Visuelt Convention in Norway, among others. His first book, Post No Bills was published by Gingko Press in late 2002 and his latest book, Obey Giant, was released in April. Articles featuring his work have been published in numerous publications including Strength Magazine, Art Papers, Juxtapoz, ARKITIP, While You Were Sleeping, Anthem Magazine, Tokion, etc. Fairey is also owner of the Los Angeles graphic design company Studio Number One and has is own clothing line, Obey clothing.

San Francisco, CA | Sep 18-21 | RESFEST 2003

Still kicking ourselves for missing the Chris Cunningham retrospective they held last time 'round. This year's RESFEST highlights the work of Michael Gondry, who is known for his trail-blazing work in commercials and has been tapped to do videos for Bjork ("Human Behaviour"), Radiohead, The Chemical Brothers, The Rolling Stones, The White Stripes (the Lego one).. even Kylie Minogue! The RES people have also put together a killer opening party with hip hop beat masters Amon Tobin and RJD2, who pick up where DJ Shadow left off.

The WC will be twiddling our thumbs for a few more weeks til RES makes its way over to New Yawk, where they got LCD Soundsystem - woohoo!

London | September 24 | V

RISK AND ORIGINALITY ARE ABOUT TO BE EXPLORED IN COMMERCIAL ART

We are pleased to present V
A collaboration as dynamic as it is unique between:

MATT & AUSTIN, (NEW)
ANDREW & SPENCER, (PEEPSHOW)
RON JONZO, (RONZO INDUSTRIES)
LUCY & AL, (BEAT 13)
JAKE, (DETONATOR)
MR PINKS (PINKY)
JODY BARTON, (BIG ACTIVE)

V brings together a heavyweight group of eminently talented artists - their collective influence already being felt in diverse and far flung corners of the media. St.Luke's advertising agency is the venue for what will be a highly innovative, venue-specific collaborative art project.

IN THE CURATING CORNER:

Austin Cowdall and Matt Hamilton of NEW. From their control centre 20 floors up in a South London tower block, NEW have swooped to conquer, applying their lo-tech urban street art and new-tech edginess to iconic effect for The Face, Levi's, Mother, The Guardian Guide, Time Out, Lodown magazine, The British Council and the simian eclecticism of The Illustrated Ape Magazine, for which they have provided illustration, design and art direction.

This mutually inspiring creative relay will take place with ten equally acclaimed illustrators, resulting in three pieces of original collaborative artwork, to be painted directly onto the exhibition space.

IN THE COLLABORATIVE CORNER:

ANDREW and SPENCER from PEEPSHOW, whose clients include the BBC, PERVERTED SCIENCE, and GRAPHICS INTERNATIONAL are ready to go the distance, as is RON JONZO, who has already shown impressive form with his LEVIS, RED BULL & MITSUBISHI combination. LUCY and AL from BEAT 13 (CARHARTT, MTV, EMI) are definitely not punching above their weight, and weaving with comparable flare is JAKE, whose clients include The Prodigy, Lucas Films and Ugly Duckling. MR PINKS has sparred with such luminaries as CHRISTIAN DIOR, MAHARISHI and FCUK, whilst JODY BARTON counts GREENPEACE, VIOLENT DELIGHT and VICE Magazine among his most high profile conquests.

The blend of styles promises a mixed-media meltdown of cutting edge illustration and design that has its finger so hard on the pulse its fingerprints have worn away. DJ's to be confirmed and special V Stall from the likes of artist and collector Mark Pawson (Urban Outfitters and Tatty Devine) will mark the event out as much more than just another Private View!
