NYC | Sep 16 | Andrew Pommier "Whale Rider"

Artist Andrew Pommier, the young Canadian illustrator, painter, and doodler, today presents his exhibit "Whale Fighter" at 55DSL Flagship Union Square.

Andrew Pommier has been working closely on idea's that were inspired by Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" and are the basis for the current exhibit, "Whale Fighter." It is the particular passage describing a crewmember's discovery of what he believes is the great white whale [long searched for by Captain Ahab] that serves as the foundation of the artwork. As the story reveals, on closer inspection, the sea creature turns out to be a giant squid that has floated to the surface. In Pommier's view, the giant squid symbolizes the strength of such sea creatures and the battles thought to take place between the great whales and giant squids. Pommier is also challenged by the creatures' awkward and mysterious ways that make them intriguing to draw.

"I work with themes that are always in a state of flux," Pommier said. As many in the art community know, he draws constantly with his sketchbook always at hand. Anything and everything inspires Pommier -- from television to books to travel to other artists. Oddity is always central to his work.

Please join 55DSL at the New York flagship store on 1 Union Square West for the "Whale Fighter" Exhibit, which runs from September 16 - November 16, 2003.
