Shit We're Diggin': Harry Smith's "Film #10: Mirror Animations" From 1957

"Harry Smith is best known for compiling the *Anthology of American Folk Music*, the highly influential 1952 collection that had a significant hand in the blues and folk revival of the '50s and '60s. What isn't as widely known is that Smith—also a painter, linguist, and anthropologist—created a significant body of experimental films: kinetic, vibrant, sometimes abstract work that earned him a spot in the history of American avant-garde cinema. His 1957 animated collage *Film #10: Mirror Animations* was included in his short film anthology *Early Abstractions*, which was selected in 2006 by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry. While originally silent, Smith later used music by the Fugs (who were Smith's friends) and the Beatles as the collection's soundtrack; its video release in 1987 synced music from Teiji Ito (husband of another experimental filmmaker, Maya Deren), and more recent scores have been created by pianist/composer Philip Glass and the band Sonic Youth. Smith himself described *Film #10* as An exposition of Buddhism and the Kaballa in the form of a collage. The final scene shows Agaric mushrooms growing on the moon while the Hero and Heroine row by on a cerebrum.

This soundtrack for *Film #10: Mirror Animations* was created in July 2009 by the Shaking Ray Levis and Love, Execution Style. It was improvised and recorded in real-time, as the musicians viewed the film."

COMBO a collaborative animation by Blu and David Ellis

When we first heard that David Ellis and Blu were collaborating on a timelapse video we were beyond thrilled. Long before Blu did MUTO, David put together the most amazing timelapse videos we've ever seen with the Barnstormers.

Talking with Blu the other night, he told to us that COMBO, the video he did with David
at this year's Fame festival would be up on YouTube this week.

And here it is...

From Erik -

"While living in Brooklyn I would leave drawings and wheat pastes of paper birds as my own bread crumbs through the city. After several years it was possible to see each static image as frames of a much larger piece; one that employed the entire city."

Deadline

"This is my senior project at Savannah College of Art and Design. Where my idea comes from is that every time when I am busy, I feel that I am not fighting with my works, I am fighting with those post-it notes and deadline. I manipulating the post-it notes to do pixel-like stop motion and there are some interactions between real actor and post-its."... Bang-yao Liu

UPDATE: Video Of Bill Brand's Subway Animation "Masstransiscope"

We wanted to post an update to the subway animation video we posted yesterday. We've received a ton of terrific emails letting us (and you) know that the animation in the video was created by film and video artist Bill Brand. Bill's currently a professor at Hampshire College. The recently restored piece was originally created 28 years ago in 1980. It's called "Masstransiscope" and is indeed absolutely amazing.

Click here for a full breakdown of the project. Video is below.

Brooklyn Subway Animaton

From RageHaus:

"My wife and I recently we took a trip to NYC and stayed in Brooklyn near Union and 4th. Long story short, we became quite good at navigating the subways (seeings how this was our first NYC trip). We took the Q train from Atlantic-Pacific headed toward Manhattan and found a gem. We were so excited to see this animation, we rode the route a second time just to get some video. We couldn't believe that someone took the time to paint each frame and space it so well. We saw some fantastic things (and some strangely odd things) while riding the subway, but this was work worthy of sharing."
