Challenge: Create an image out of a word, using only the letters in the word itself.

Rule: Use only the graphic elements of the letters without adding outside parts.

Nowhere Near Here from Pahnl Whatnow on Vimeo.

'Nowhere Near Here' is a stop motion animation that uses a combination of light with stencils and long exposure photography to tell the story of a dog running around the city at night, doing whatever a dog does. The animation was first exhibited at the The Herbert, in Coventry, on the 7th October 2010.

With well over 300 hours in the making, more than 200 stencils involved and too many cold nights spent outside on my knees getting the shots, I am very happy (and relieved) to finally share this with you. Through the course of shooting 'Nowhere Near Here', I have dealt with curious drunks, a dog almost peeing on the camera (the irony is not lost on me, haha), the endlessly suspicious police and even someone nearly running off with a tripod.".... THISPLACEMENT from Baschz Leeft on Vimeo.

During Image Festival Rotterdam 2010, Baschz and Selfcontrolfreak set up a table and a green screen in the Centrum Beeldende Kunst Rotterdam. The initiative, called THISPLACEMENT is their latest crowdsourcing art project, a follow-up to their brilliant Masterpiece 2.0 project.

On Saturday the 23rd and Sunday the 24th of October, people were invited to CBK Rotterdam to come by and donate a personal object which then was used by the artists in their new work. The final piece was finished the same week and presented on Sunday the 31st of October.

In return people received a unique signed frame with their object in it.

I've always been amazed by the support action sports gives art, from skateboards to t-shirt designs and shoes, it all comes full circle.”

"Harry Smith is best known for compiling the *Anthology of American Folk Music*, the highly influential 1952 collection that had a significant hand in the blues and folk revival of the '50s and '60s. What isn't as widely known is that Smith—also a painter, linguist, and anthropologist—created a significant body of experimental films: kinetic, vibrant, sometimes abstract work that earned him a spot in the history of American avant-garde cinema. His 1957 animated collage *Film #10: Mirror Animations* was included in his short film anthology *Early Abstractions*, which was selected in 2006 by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry. While originally silent, Smith later used music by the Fugs (who were Smith's friends) and the Beatles as the collection's soundtrack; its video release in 1987 synced music from Teiji Ito (husband of another experimental filmmaker, Maya Deren), and more recent scores have been created by pianist/composer Philip Glass and the band Sonic Youth. Smith himself described *Film #10* as An exposition of Buddhism and the Kaballa in the form of a collage. The final scene shows Agaric mushrooms growing on the moon while the Hero and Heroine row by on a cerebrum.

This soundtrack for *Film #10: Mirror Animations* was created in July 2009 by the Shaking Ray Levis and Love, Execution Style. It was improvised and recorded in real-time, as the musicians viewed the film."

"This is my senior project at Savannah College of Art and Design. Where my idea comes from is that every time when I am busy, I feel that I am not fighting with my works, I am fighting with those post-it notes and deadline. I manipulating the post-it notes to do pixel-like stop motion and there are some interactions between real actor and post-its."... Bang-yao Liu

We wanted to post an update to the subway animation video we posted yesterday. We've received a ton of terrific emails letting us (and you) know that the animation in the video was created by film and video artist Bill Brand. Bill's currently a professor at Hampshire College. The recently restored piece was originally created 28 years ago in 1980. It's called "Masstransiscope" and is indeed absolutely amazing.

Click here for a full breakdown of the project. Video is below.

From RageHaus:

"My wife and I recently we took a trip to NYC and stayed in Brooklyn near Union and 4th. Long story short, we became quite good at navigating the subways (seeings how this was our first NYC trip). We took the Q train from Atlantic-Pacific headed toward Manhattan and found a gem. We were so excited to see this animation, we rode the route a second time just to get some video. We couldn't believe that someone took the time to paint each frame and space it so well. We saw some fantastic things (and some strangely odd things) while riding the subway, but this was work worthy of sharing."
