We first came across Matt
We first came across Matt Sewell in the terrific
(but now unfortunately hard to find) book, Scrawl Too: More Dirt. Part of
the Scrawl Collective, and working out of Brighton, England, Matt has become
known around the world for his illustrations and paintings. But, as Matt wrote
us a while back—“Having grown up with that lovelly thing we call graff, i
find it hard to resist the call of the streets…..” The other day Matt was kind
enough to send us the A’s to our Q’s. Here they are:

Wooster: How did you get started in creating art for the street?
/>Matt: I started basic tagging when i was a kid going out on my paper
round with a marker, i had no idea what i was doing, it probably wasnt even a
permanent pen. Since then i’ve gone through swings of productivity from fuck all
for years to going out and bombing, stickering, whatever everynight. but i get
bored and dont write the same name or do the same name, or the same stickers or
characters for more than a couple of months. I know thats not what its really
about but fuck it i’m all for the ride.
Wooster: How did you
come up with the characters for the Children of Planet Earth stickers? What was
the inspiration?
Matt: The Children of Planet Earth are
definetly one thing that has stuck. They originally appeared as part of a live
painting me and other members of the

I started drawing them again this winter. I live in Brighton, and english
seaside towns in the winter are f f f freezin. If you aint got a big coat your a
homeless. So seeing all the peeps in their big duffers struck a chord and got me
adding to the family. Alot of them are actually based on friends and other peeps
i see kickin round the block.
Wooster: What other street
artists do you most admire and why?
Matt: many, many many,
obvious shouts to the Scrawl
Collective, those who i think really rock are
"http://www.missvan.com/">miss van, pinky, the lil muju, junk183 (yea man
yea), rarekind,NT, TCF,TDK,DBS, LEO, nylon, i could go on forever. All these
have style, style, style and are in it for the ride.
Wooster:
What’s your favorite city, neighborhood, or block, to post and/or to see street
art?
Matt: brighton for me is amazin for street based art,
plenty of good writers hitting anything, its sometimes like a massive gallery
before the bastard buff turns up. People like Daz one, hes on fire at the mo, i
dont think he sleeps, req one canvas are still rockin he even gives them away a
club. The London Police brought
their lads down recently, always a pleasure.

Wooster: What inspires you now?
Matt: girls, animals,
the promise of summer, oh yes it will soon be here….
/>Wooster: What are you currently working on? Can you give us a sneak
peak?
Matt: at the mo im doing a massive canvas for
