Turf in a Nutshell

href="http://www.fotolog.net/elturferizm/">Turf in a nutshell.

/>Everybody calls him Turf, even his mom.
She used to call him Jean,
/>She hopes that one day people will call him that again.
They started
calling him Turf because he tagged it.
That was in Paris back in the late
801s.
He did a lot of graffiti about 90% more than 98% of these so called
urban
artists we see running around talking about their 3past2 in the
streets did
or do, but I digressS
So anyways, from painting streets he
got into Canvas work, that was like in
1991.
In 1996 he was employed
by a french hiphop publication called Radikal
which is the equivalent to
U.S. magazine The Source(when The Source was
still alright).
At
Radikal he did a double page comic strip and was their in-house
/>illustrator.
He moved on in 2001.
Over the years he has made a
living as a freelance illustrator working for
people like the Universal
Music group, the Canada Council for the Arts,
various clothing companies
and print publications.
In 2001 Turf linked up with me and we made
sekondhandprojects(.com),
published our first book All-City(ecw press) in
2002 and have a new book
out this winter called Bully (ecw press).
/>He1s presently working on a documentary film about the 300 Km of abandoned
/>tunnels under Paris (Catacombes) and the people that inhabit themS
He has
45 hours of raw footage to date.
Turf stopped painting canvas a few years
ago.
I mean, he still does once in a while but he prefers painting things
he
finds, like old wood, metal, anything. Its either that or he actually
paints
in old warehouses and places where no one really goesS
Its like
he has a solo urban renewal projects going.
Over the years he has had
gallery shows in Paris, Montreal, New York and
VancouverS
If you ask
him he might tell you about them.
