MAGAZINE. Haven’t heard of Evil Monito yet? Here’s their manifesto (nicked
from their website):
“Evil Monito magazine was launched by Rickey
Kim in 2001, with backing from a student collective of critical minds, to combat
the ailment that pop culture has brought onto the masses. Ever aware and keen of
the western-centric notions that has engulfed and sponsored the so called
“globalization” process, EM strives to set the precedent for alternative thought
with its ultimate intent to re-educate the people providing a hub for cultural
discussion and debate.
Amidst countless journals and periodicals that
deal on pop culture, many often serve to propagate rather then critique the
fundamental issues at hand. This is where EM differs. By fusing pieces of
analytical process and spotlighting the essence of the real, EM covers a broad
spectrum of subjects ranging from rave culture, to organized crime syndicates,
to interviews with independent musical acts, all written candidly yet with sharp
socio-cultural critical anecdotes.
In 1964, sparks flew within the
circles of social studies academia as the concept of the Public Sphere was
introduced by Jurgen Habermas. In his writings, Habermas defined the Public
Sphere as a “realm of our social life in which something approaching public
opinion can be formed.” Habermas then continued explaining his concept in more
detail, along with the histories and placement of the Public Sphere in the world
today.
EM is determined to fulfill this role of the Public Sphere:
to bridge the gap between the consumer and the corporate, the layman and the
strongman, the people and the government; making heads roll as the onslaught of
pop culture has begun.
This is about revelation.
This is about
reconstruction.
This is revolution.
Welcome to Evil
Monito. We take no prisoners.”
