The World’s Smallest Stencil

On the left, is a five layer stencil of Einstein. The stencil is
about 2 feet tall. But the Einstein “stencil” on the right is actually a micro
stencil that was created using a modified scanning electron microscope. The
surface is illuminated with a beam of electrons, which then modify the surface.
The whole thing is then put into a dish with protein molecules. The molecules
prefer to stick to the surface according the degree of the modification/damage
done with the electron beam. The green light is the fluorescent signal from the
marker molecules attached to the protein. Bright color indicates high
concentration, dark color shows low concentration.
The size of this
image on the right is less than a quarter of hair diameter.
