The Story of Baja Fresh and Daniel Johnston

Seth
Johnson has been taking lots of pictures of street art he finds around Austin,
Tezas. He’s been posting photos in his href="http://www.austinskatenotes.org/images/gallery/wheatpaste_poster_art_in_Au
stin">online gallery
.

He writes of the photo above: “The href="http://www.hihowareyou.com/bio.htm">Daniel Johnston piece can be found
on the side of Baja Fresh. It’s an interesting mural. The building originally
was a punk record store called Sound Exchange. The rent raised after almost a
decade and pushed them out of business. The mural had existed on the side of the
record store for many years. Kurt Cobain used to wear a t-shirt of this same
graphic, being a fan of the Austin musician/artist, Daniel Johnston.

/>So Baja Fresh came along and leased the building and planned to have windows
all along that side of the structure. Some local Austinites cried foul and the
restaurant chain surprisingly responded that they had no idea about the
significance of the mural and redrew their design to include the mural. They
also bought a canvas from DJ and it hangs inside the restaurant on the same wall
as his exterior mural.

Pretty surprising that a chain business would
respect the local scene like that. But it can happen.”
