The Start Mobile Launch
Sometimes we try things and, for one reason or
another, it just doesn’t work out. The best thing about running this site is
that everything we do is really an experiment. Not everything has to be a
“success”. One of the experiments we tried earlier this year was “Wooster
Mobile” a “mobile wallpaper portal” where you could download images of street
art onto your mobile phone.
We ran Wooster Mobile as a four month
experiment On the project we were able to work with some terrific people - Logan
Hicks and Mark Ghuneim (through his company Wiredset).
But at the end
of the day the Wooster Mobile project basically didn’t work. The downloads were
never enough to cover the expenses, we had no ability to make it “bigger” then
it was, and the management of it kept us from other things. Because of this, we
ended the trial a couple of months ago.
While we still don’t know if
the project would have been successful if we had stuck with it, we always did
like the basic concept and liked the idea that mobile could be a new revenue
source for artists.
So while it didn’t work for us, we were always
hopeful that it would work for others.

this week we were excited to hear that Start Soma, the group that created the
Art Hotel in San Francisco, has finally launched their mobile project,
href="http://www.startmobile.net/">Start Mobile.
As you will see,
the site is definately the “ultimate” destination for mobile wallpaper of your
favorite street artists from around the world. There’s lots of pieces of
original art to choose from.
Start Mobile looks terrific and we wish
the best for John, the Start Soma crew, and all of the artists who are involved.
While we couldn’t make it work with Wooster Mobile, we do hope that Start Mobile
can.
