The new issue (July/August) of RES
Magazine is starting to hit newstands this week. The theme is RESISTANCE and
it’s absolutely terrific. The cover story is an extensive interview with one of
our favorite local artists, KAWS. In
addition to designing the cover, Kaws provides some terrific photos for the
piece. The new issue also includes an article about
href="http://www.mydadsstripclub.com">Ange Taggart who, with her frequent
collaborator James Leadbitter, was our first guest a few months back for our
“Wooster Collective Live” series of salons that we’ve been having at our loft
here in Soho. Months later, people are still talking about Ange and James and
how amazing that evening was here in New York.
Here’s a short
excerpt of the KAWS article nicked from the RES
website:

neighborhood, to keep it personal,” remarks Kaws, a 28-year-old Brooklyn-based
artist who rose to prominence out of the New York graffiti scene in 1996. His
trademark image, an iconic, two-tone skull and crossbones, began appearing
prominently on the surfaces of billboards around the city, but, despite the fact
that the cartoon death’s head had been painted onto a Marlboro ad, Kaws admits
that he was less interested in attacking the cigarette-maker than in the
physical real-estate occupied by the billboard itself. “I didn’t see it as a
political statement, but it turned into my logo pretty
fast….”
If you’re a frequent reader of the Wooster
site, and you’re not yet familiar with RES, go out and get a copy of the mag.
You’ll read it from cover to cover. Trust us. (We haven’t steered you wrong yet,
have we?)
