/>“Twenty years ago there was a dirt track between the old mud hut Dubai and Abu
Dhabi. Today the track begins with a alley of skycrapers and the roads are lined
with the finest grass and trees which get fed desalinated water 24/7. Dubai is a
malstrom of construction. All along the coastline there are massive ‘palm tree’
shaped islands appearing. There is even a replica ‘map of the world’ shaped
island which will house and contain the millions of expat professionals expected
of the coming years. It’s a picture prefect vision of a future city which I
hate.
Before coming to Dubai I lived in Beirut for a year, and on my
last night I got pissed drunk and went around the neighbourhood spray-gluing
leaves to the spray-painted crosses that the Christian militia had made to mark
their terittory. Thats what inspired the Leaf Project in Dubai. Some guerila
gardening on an ersatz landscape.
