/>From Sztuka Fabryka: “In 1989 I
made my second travel through Poland where I started my trip in Warsaw. After I
checked in, in the youth hostel I wanted to make a walk. To cross a road I had
to take a tunnel. When I went into the tunnel, I saw that it was completely
decorated with stencil graffiti. From a Polish friend I heard that stencil
graffiti was a technique which was used a lot in whole Poland. Probably at that
time Poland was the country where stencil graffiti was most used. As for them it
was a quick way to express political ideas. When changes started to come slowly,
soon also artistic pieces started to appear. I took a few pictures. Light was
bad in the tunnel, but the pictures show some history of street art. I started
to get some contact with Polish stencil graffiti artists and did get their work
for my Sztuka Fabryka Archive. A few years
later I have made on one of my
“Independent Arts”-Festival an exhibition with these stencil graffiti pieces.
Infect “Beyond the streets” ain’t the first exhibition of street art, there was
one at my Festival ten years ago. But at that time street art was completely
unknown in Belgium. Maybe I should pick up the magazines and artworks from my
Archive shown at that exhibition, and have it again on display at the Festival.
