Hometown: brisbane, australia

Who and/or what are some of your influences?
popular music, hair metal, tupac, artists: nan goldin—although
u wont be able to tell- my book on spray can art i had as a kid, david carson,
wolfgang tilmans, drag kings—i suppose, pathetic nightclubs and seedy bars,
rosalie gasgoigne, tracey moffat… lots more that i can’t think of… richie
hawtin, underworld, kraftwork.
Why “hair bands”?
I’ve been working for a while with the idea of how people
re-work popular music into narratives which relate to their lives. I sort of
fell into looking at hair metal, i liked it as a kid, and it is such a joke as a
musical genre, and yet recently when i went to see kiss (the band) i could see
how passionately people related to these oft derided tunes. I like the idea of
people reclaiming a critically panned genre and relating the grievances and
triumph’s of their lives to lyrics which are often considered trite and
What other artists do you most admire?
well apart from the one’s listed above, i guess i would add
andreas gursky, cindy sherman, seen, public enemy, gnome, lady pink, pnau,
peaches—definately peaches, david lynch, robert altman.
/>How would you describe your art to someone who could not see it?
hmmm… it’s about sadness, loss and grief as well as love and
transcendence. it revels in the excesses of popular culture, it’s meant to be
funny but kind of sad as well.
What other talent would
most like to have?
i’d really like to know how to do
stuff with sound, i have all the programs, but just don’t seem to have the time
to put it together and do something. i might be in a show later in the year
where i have proposed doing something with sound… so i guess i’ll have to
learn by then. (!)
What do you fear the most?
my biggest fear was my grandmother dying, but she died this
year… so now i guess it is failing to be a good person, living an unfulfilled
life… on a more banal level sharks and flying.
is your greatest ambition?
to be proud of myself, to be
able to love properly, to not be afraid of living and making mistakes.
