1337 - The A’s to Our Q’s:

Wooster: How did you get
started in creating art for the street?

1337: It
began with dodgy graff and pictures in pool chalk on the footpath or walls
after a night out; and then when I started making stencils, putting them onto
stickers in a production line seemed like a natural progression.

/>Wooster: Why 1337 and why Dracula?

/>1337: 1337 is actually LEET which means elite in internet
slang. It’s the way you end up talking after years of online gaming with 14 year
old computer geeks. I know most people won’t get it, but I get satisfaction
thinking about business men and women who glance at a lamp post, see my sticker,
and think to themselves ” what the fuck is that all about?” I like the fact that
my art might make them stop and check themselves, and maybe realise that there’s
more to this big, wide world than what goes on in their daily routine. As for
the monsters, I’ve always had a love of trashy, B-grade horror movies, and I use
these images because I belive they display traits of my own personallity… a
little worrying, but definately not too serious.

Wooster:
What other street artists do you most admire and why?

/>1337: This list could go on forever, but if I have to break
it down, it goes like this.. Aussies like Lister, YOK, Syn, ECCE, Optic and
Psalm for their dedication to Australian street art, and the big names like
Banksy, Shepard Fairey and Barry McGee who show the rest of the world that
street art is as important as anything hanging in a gallery. And finally, much
respect to all the skateboarders worldwide who go out every day and bust their
shit.

Wooster: What’s your favorite city,
neighborhood, or block, to post and/or to see street art?

/>1337: Brisbane has an active street art scene for a
relatively small city, so pretty much anywhere is fair game. I tend to stick up
in the city and the Valley for maximum exposure.  I was also in Melbourne 3
months ago for the opening of the Stick Em’ Up exhibition, and it really blew me
away. Melbourne has a GREAT scene with inspiration everywhere you look. I know
it wont be long before I’m back down there for another little adventure.
/>
Wooster: What inspires you now?

/>1337: my girlfriend, the internet, skateboarding, film,
music, people, life, beer.

Wooster: What are you
currently working on?  Can you give us a sneak peek?

/>1337: My stickers and stencils are constantly evolving, and
at the moment I’m experimenting with designs for wheat posters. Still going with
the horror theme, but mixing it up a bit and trying to incorporate references to
the internet. Remember kids…....1337 amz teh HaXz0r :(
