Words on the piece by the artist:
The two center figures represent key people in my journey and that of many other youngsters who envisioned a better life in the United States. It was the 90's and in my village life was becoming harder and harder as we became young adults. Because they were known as one of the first to have come to the United States, young people sought their advice. They knew where to find jobs as farmworkers.
They became the connection between ranchers and workers. The husband himself worked along the West cost states and as far as Texas harvesting seasonal crops. Personally, I've been wanting to paint them as a thank you for helping me become the person I am today. By guiding me in my journey to the United States, they also helped me find a purpose in life. In return, I am now able to help my family back in my village in Oaxaca, and in the future support the village itself, the village that also saw them being born, raised, and ultimately sent them away in search of better opportunities. Their journey to the United States gave them the experience and their goodwill of sharing gave others the opportunities for a better life.
