Moniker Stories: Part III
href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/other/">OTHER:
“My moniker is
an alter ego right. something “other” than me. I grew up around a lot of stale
graffiti up here in Canada. A scene that was so dry, most of the Canadian
writers just took styles and even straight up bit the names of famous graffiti
artists in New York. I hung out with these fools but I felt that I never quite
fit in and they were always getting on my case about “how I should do more
lettering pieces” or “that is not real hip-hop”. I was always the “other” one.
That guy who was called up to do a character when they were doing a production
and needed
blank space filled in. “Yo..Can you paint Fat Albert, man?.. We
are doing this theme production of the Fat Albert show and we need someone to do
the characters”...What a nightmare.
0190Ren:
“Ren is
my favourite cartoon Character from the best TV show ever produced: The Ren &
Stimpy Show. He is a really dislikable Chihuaha and always angry about
something. 0190 is a well known number for Phone Sex Hotlines in germany. So
0190REN is the outcome of my two favourite interests. Sex & Cartoons=
Graffiti”
href="http://www.girlsbike.com/">Abe Lincoln, Jr:
“Back in 1995
I’d had a concept for a Hardcore band called Gettysburg Express. I’d dress up
like Abe Lincoln and sing hardcore songs about the Civil War from Lincoln’s
perspective.
So I didn’t do anything for a few years and finally on a
lark, I decided to do a show as Gettysburg Express. One of the people who I
asked to be the guitarist was an editor at Details magazine, and they were doing
a feature on gag bands so he let us be in the magazine before we’d played any
shows or even finished writing the songs.
Anyways long story short,
we practised a couple times and played a gig at the Cooler that was probably the
most blazing 15 minutes of hardcore they’d ever seen and in the end the lead
guitarist John Wilkes Boothe “shot” me in the head before the encore. end of
band.
Then when I sent you (Wooster) stuff, and you asked me what
“street name” I went by and picked Abe Lincoln Jr. at random. Turned out to be a
pretty good choice ”
/>MAGMO:
“My wife’s
name is “Tomoko” which over time has been shortened to the nickname “Tomo”. Our
dog’s name was “Whiskey”, but we called him “Whimo” (I’m not sure why). So Tomo
and Whimo added a “mo” to part of my first name, so that made me “Rymo”, that
made me apart of their gang. Then one day Tomo, Whimo, and Rymo went for a walk
to get some Pho, and decided to add “mo” to part of my last name which made
“MAGMO”. Magmo added the description “The Destroyer” because that is what he
likes to do.
ps. attached is a photo of the latest Magmo Recycle
Doll, SMASHBURN! He is part of MF Gallery’s 3rd Annual Halloween Art Show.
Opening Party Saturday September 24th 7-10 PM.

“Around ‘90 some friends and I
started to create rap songs for fun and I needed a mc name, I didn’t wanna use
the graff name I used at that time so I had to come up with a new one. In the
back of my mind I wanted to do more with the music so I needed a name that was
closer to me and not just a word like with a graff name. My real name is Hugo
Mulder so thats the H and M. My thing was and is to always try to create
origional stuff and basically I myself am an origional. So I turned it into “De
Hugo Mulder”(Dutch for “The Hugo Mulder”). With my new mc name I started writing
lyrics and producing demos that resulted in a deal and a full album that came
out in ‘96. At that same time I started my own graphic design studio and I stuck
with the name, as the “D” can also stand for “design” or as some of my friends
call me Don Hugo
So since then I used it on all my personal projects,
paintings, stickers whatever.
I even signed the contract for buying my
house with a DHM tag.”
