Give ‘Em Props! Chapman Brothers’ ‘Insult to Injury’ by Regular Product

“This
is really tough. I’ve been trying to narrow it down for days and it’s impossible
because there are so many pieces and things I love so I’m going to go for
something that’s been freaking me out just recently. Which is ‘Insult to Injury’
by the
Chapman Brothers. It’s basically a set of Goya’s ‘Disasters of War’
print series which they bought and then drew clown and puppy faces over. They
called them “rectified” rather than vandalized, but it’s the same. It’s really
similar to the act of putting a poster or sticker or something up on the street.
The street is fine as it is most times but it’s interesting to change people’s
perception of it by adding something to it, by fucking with it in some way -
they’ve done the same thing with Goya. It’s also a really subversive thing to do
and its basically graf, except over some really expensive artwork. It points out
how futile art is in the face of war and torture at an appropriate time
considering. It’s a simple idea, but the best ones often are. There’s a lot of
high art wank surrounding stuff like this but they look totally amazing and I
want one.”
