“Five on Five” with Magmo and MCA

We recently invited a group of our favorite
artists to ask five questions of another artist who they knew and admired. After
answering the questions, the tables then become turned and five q’s are sent in
the opposite direction. So for this week’s ‘Five on Five”, here are two of
Boston’s finest, Magmo vs. href="http://www.evildesign.com">MCA.

/>MAGMO’s 5IVE ?‘s FOR MR.EVIL

Magmo: “#1. Out of
all the characters you have drawn which one is the most super evil and why?”
/>
MCA: “umm… There isn’t one character that is super evil. None of the
characters are ‘evil’ in the dictionary definition of the word. They all fall
into the ‘evil’ world by the things that interest them, music, movies, books
etc.. & their thoughts. The type of stuff that a suburban mom might think is
‘evil’ - does this make any sense ?  kind of like - you know that old saying ‘if
I only knew then what I know now’ - well I think of these kids as 12 year olds
that do know what’s up… and that may make them seem ‘evil to the general
public.

Magmo: “#2. Name 3 artists that you would like to collaborate
with?”

MCA:  “Yamataka Eye - just on anything. James Jarvis - on a
cartoon where his characters meet my characters - maybe like a gang fight
cartoon. Takashi Murakami - on some wild big sculptures.  ALSO… on a non
drawing collab - it’d be great to form a musical group {that would put out 1
record & break up} that would include: myself, Adam Horowitz, Yamataka Eye - and
have guest appearances by Andrew WK & Peter Prescott.”

Magmo: “#3.
What type of animal would you be?”

MCA: “a monkey of the sea, a stray
dog with the mange would be fun too - but I’ll go with monkey of the sea…”

/>
Magmo: “#4. What is one thing that you would like to destroy in this
world?”

MCA: “TOP 3. 3. G-Damn Litter bugs. There should be a guy
that walks around and if he sees someone littering he just kicks the hell out of
them. They do say that littering creates jobs, but I still don’t like it.  2.
People that don’t use their blinker when changing lanes on the highway - usually
the non-blinker types are also yelling a bunch of nonsense into their cell
phones at the same time they are almost giving me a side-swipe! 1. Close-minded
motherfkers. They need to be stopped!

Magmo: “#5. Finish this
sentence: My fingers are sticky because… “

MCA: “they are covered
in drool!”

5IVE QUESTIONS FOR MR. DESTROYER!

/>MCA: “#1 Please name your top 3 favorite (and explain why) corporations.”
/>
MAGMO: “That’s a tough one. I’m not really sure if I have any favorite
corporations.. When I think of corporations I think of brand names. when I think
of favorite brandnames I think of some of the first brands I was exposed to
while growing up.

1. I remember going food shopping with my mom. We
always bought Stop & Shop brand food. Stop & Shop is a grocery chain throughout
New England. My mom, sister and brother survived on it. We could never afford
brandname products. My mom always said it was the same thing but just wrapped in
a different package. But when friends would come over and ask for a glass of
Coke or Pepsi, I could only offer them Stop & Shop pineapple lime flavored soda
that glowed and left a yellow stain around your mouth, we loved it. I think at
least 85% of my body is made up of Stop & Shop pasta and ice cream..

/>2. Have you ever heard of the clothing chain “T.J.MAX”? Maybe not, but I know
everyone remembers starting the new school year, and “Back To School” shopping.
I don’t really no much about this particular corporation, but I do know that as
a kid my mom would bring us to pick out new outfits to wear to school. I
remember that most of the cloths had “irregular” or “missing button” labels on
them, some had little “X’s” that where made out of masking tape that indicated a
small hole or rip. We would spend all night trying on pants and shirts, and when
it was my sisters turn to try clothes on me and my brother would hide in the
clothe racks and watch people. At the end of the night my mom would let us pick
1 or 2 items, out from our pile of clothes, that we could buy that night. The
rest of the clothes went to “Lay-Away”. “Lay-Away” was a service that if you
didn’t have enough money, you could put a few dollars down, and the store would
hold onto your clothes until you had enough money to pay for them. after picking
your favorite item, the rest of the clothes where folded very neatly, sealed in
a cardboard box with your name on it and then taken to the back room where it
would wait for you. the best feeling was riding home holding your lay-away
receipt thinking about all the new clothes your gonna have in 3 weeks. most of
the time we would never see those clothes again. I look back on it now, and even
though we never got our lay-away clothes, those nights where some of the most
fun nights I had as a kid with my family. TJMAX gave a family who didn’t have
much, a feeling that anything you picked out could be yours. I’ll take a pair of
irregular dungarees with a broken zipper any day of the week.

3. Karo
Syrup.  it is clear sweet corn syrup. not sure why but we always had a bottle
of this stuff in our cupboard. at first I thought it was weird, “clear” syrup..
strange, but I use to come home from school and have a few spoon fulls as a
snack. I love the taste. very good on pancakes and french toast. I’m not sure
what corporation makes this stuff but here is the website with more info and
recipes: href="http://www.karosyrup.com/history.asp">http://www.karosyrup.com/history.asp

Warning: I ate a lot of this stuff as a kid and as I type this my
teeth are rotting out of my head, so eat at own risk.

MCA: “#2. How
do you feel that your artwork can change the way people view the world?”
/>
MAGMO: “Magmo writes stories and creates artwork that is related to
everyday problems that I see in our world. some people relate to the stories and
artwork, for others it may be their first time thinking about such topics. all
in all, at the end of the day, if for one second MAGMO has made you question the
world we live, that one second is the biggest change I could ask for.

/>MCA: “#3. if you had a no-limit budget to do an art project - what would it
be?”

MAGMO: “That would be awesome…no limit…hmmm… how bout…
First close all highways and make a giant train system with super big windows
which is powered by sun. Then, have artists paint over all the billboards,
street signs, advertisement , buildings, and parking garages. Then, rip up the
concrete and have big gardens planted with fresh fruit and cool flowers that you
never get to see. All types of live bands/dj’s and music would be played
outside. People would make good food and set up little food tables for everyone
to taste ( I just hope no one puts any razor blades in their recipes). people
can ride the sun powered train from city to city to see new art, taste new food,
and trade homemade t-shirts with one another…. c’mon you said no limit…
/>
MCA: “#4 - name one of your favorite records and tell us why we should
give it a listen.”

MAGMO:
