D*Face - The A’s to Our Q’s:
Wooster: How did you get started
in creating art for the street?
D*Face: I dabbled
with spray painting and tagging early on after discovering the seminal book
‘subway art’. I grew up on a diet of cartoons, punk and skateboarding, stickers
featured heavily. I’ve always been interested in graff and when I saw what
href="http://www.obeygiant.com">Shepard was doing way back with his ‘Obey’
stickers and posters, the spark leapt and it seemed like the perfect direction
for me to take in order to get my work onto the street.
/>Wooster: What other street artists do you most admire and
why?
D*Face: Really anyone who is inspired and
driven enough to put work up on the street. But if I have to name names. aghh
theres too many. but I’ll start with. Shepard
Fairey for his constant determination and for putting so much into the
street, Dalek and
href="http://www.kawsone.com/">Kaws for their style and characters,
href="http://www.pha.jhu.edu/~jdavies/bode/">Vaughn Bode for mad characters
from way back. Twist for an amazing style and a tight tag. The
href="http://www.thelondonpolice.com/">TLP for support & encouragement, Dist
is stepping up with lovely work and my crew FKC (Chimp,
href="http://www.mysteriousal.com/dynamic/FRAMEindex.html">Mysterious Al and
PMH) for thinking and wanting the same and consistently doing tight work. lets
keep on keeping on.
Wooster: What’s your favorite
city, neighborhood, or block, to post and/or to see street art?
/>D*Face: Every city I travel to I enjoy the buzz and
excitement of getting work up, but I guess London. its home and you get to see
and discover all the nuances! I just got back from Berlin which is an amazing
place to see and get up. NYC is legendary and Barcelona is beautiful. Just
checking out what people are putting up in each city, its like one huge evolving
gallery.
Wooster: What inspires you now?
/>D*Face: Continually meeting up with like minds, sharing
ideas and working collectively, whether thats just by hitting stickers or
hanging and drawing with similar heads. Traveling to other cities is amazingly
inspiring. But everyday. the view from Waterloo Bridge on the bus is London at
its best.
Wooster: What are you currently working
on? Can you give us a sneak peek?
D*Face: Right
now, Im really into removing, painting and replacing the adverts from the London
tube trains, Im planning on replacing two cars worth, so its a real ghost train
show. Also I have loads more Ice scream characters ready to be unleashed, i’m
enjoying getting those up in some unusual subtle locations!!
