SESSION THE BOWL AT
THE DEITCH

Session The Bowl at the Deitch moves all senses:  the
smell of newly cut plywood with dust billowing in the air, the musical notes of
skateboard wheels as they traverse the levels of the bowl, the touch of the cold
metal as you climb the stairs to reach the rim and, finally, the sight of
skaters looking brightly down into the kidney shaped bowl with a festival of
images around them.  There is an energy in the air of these 30-something men,
yearning to be boys again, cheering one another on, trying to one-up each other.
There is an energy in the art and collage of images, from a brightly colored
space alien to a graffiti-skater “mix.”  Each piece could be looked at for
hours, evaluating the layers, exploring the colors.  What surprised us the most?
An “in-your-face” nude by photographer Larry Clark pasted to the bottom of a
board just waiting to be glimpsed as the skater rolls up off the edge of the
bowl.
