A Note From Us

Every week we get asked the same questions - “How
do you choose what goes up on the Wooster site each day?” “What do I need to do
to get my artwork featured on Wooster?”...

Because we get asked this
all the time, we thought we’d take a minute and try to explain how it all works.
We understand that this may be more information than you need, or want, but here
goes anyway:

Each morning Hudson, our dog, wakes us up at 6am sharp
whether we like it or not (she has some bizarre feaky inner clock). So from
6:00am to around 8:00am we quickly go through all of the emails that were sent
to us during the night. We receive anywhere between 75 - 100 emails a day from
people from all over the world. While it’s a lot of emails to read, it’s amazing
to wake up inspired every day when we see new art sent to us from places all
over the world. It’s an incredible rush.

Because we get so many
emails, unfortunately on many days there just isn’t enough time for us to read
and respond to all of them. We set aside two hours every day to update the
Wooster site. We go through each email quickly and choose the ones that need a
response that day or ones that are quick and easy to respond to. The more
complex the email the longer it takes to respond.

So the first thing
to know is, if we haven’t responded to your email it’s not because we don’t want
to, it’s only because we don’t have time. 100 emails a day is overwhelming at
times. As the emails back up, it becomes even harder. We could spend the entire
day only answering emails. Both Sara and I have “day jobs”. Wooster has no
staff, no interns…. just us.

So from 6am - 8am not only do we read
and answer emails, but we also write, edit, and format a lot of the “posts” and
upload them to the Wooster page before heading off to work. We usually try to
put up between two and five different pieces each day.

Many of the
posts are written the night before, during the late evenings while we are
watching tv or listening to music.  Most of the time we are drinking heavily
when we work on the Wooster site, so the reason why there are so many mistakes
is usually because we had too many beers or too many glasses of wine.

/>Okay, so how do we pick what artwork goes up?

The artwork that we
put up are quite simply pieces that we want to share with our friends. Its as
simple as that. The art doesn’t have to be necessarily “good”. For us, it’s not
always about having talent. It’s about having something to say, being clever,
having fun, etc. Also the artists we put up don’t have to be well-known. We are
not editors of a magazine where we are trying to choose only the most talented
artists or the ones that have the strongest “buzz” or street cred. People like
Kaws, Phil Frost, Barry McGee, etc. are all artists we absolutely love. But we
don’t go out of our way to showcase them all that much up on the Wooster site.
The reason is that you can read about them in almost every “urban art” magazine
in the world. For the most part, the Wooster site is for “everyone else”
/>
Okay, so what are the types of things that we

don’t

put up…
/>
Artists who send us photos that are totally out of focus, or are photos
where the actual art is so small on the wall that you can’t see it at all, not
only don’t get up, but we don’t usually respond to their emails at all.
(Unfortunately we get a lot of these kinds of emails)

Artists who
send us 30 photos of one single image - the exact same sticker or paste-up -
that is then shown on thirty different lamposts or walls that can be anywhere in
the world, don’t go up on the site.

Artists who send us art that is
completely derivative of other artists and shows no unique style or thought, we
don’t put up. Unfortunatley we get a ton of emails where someone is copying
something they saw on the site the week before. Just because it’s up on a wall
or lampost doesn’t mean it’s street art.

What else can we tell
you…

—We try to put event flyers up the same day we
receive them.

—The pixel width of all of the photos for the main
Wooster page is 420 pixel maximum. If you send us photos in this size it saves
us a lot of time.

—The maximum size of each photos is 32K. If you
send photos to us smaller than 32K it also saves us a lot of time.

There are so many spelling mistakes on the Wooster site for two reasons -
First, we can’t spell worth shit. Second, we don’t care about spelling
mistakes.

The most important thing to remember is -  If you don’t
like the art on the Wooster site one day, don’t worry it’ll change tomorrow.
/>
That’s it for now. We’re off for the weekend.

Cheers,
/>
