A few days ago we
A few days ago we highlighted the “Debris”
artwork of Psalm, who works out of
Melbourne. The response to his stuff was terrific. As a follow-up, we asked
him our five questions. Here’s his “A’s to our Q’s”:
1/...... I
suppose I got started in stencilling as a natural progression from graffiti. In
essence it’s fairly similar to “bombing”. You go around putting up your tag
(stencil) all over the place and your peers can identify with who’s done what.
It’s evolved from being a maker or paint scrawl into an intricate design or
pattern.
2/...... I was inspired by 2 main factors. Firstly seeing
other peoples work around town and liking what I saw. And secondly, by my friend
Paul who got me to cut a design for him. When I seen how good the final result
looked I wanted to do my own.
3/..... People that inspire me in a
street art context are: Buffmonster
and King Tofer -basically because
they’re unique. And of course all the ones we know and love: Banksy>, Obey
Giant, Dave Kinsey, Andy Howell, etc, etc - basically
because they’ve mastered the art of “propaganda” to a fine degree, and they’re
work is pretty good as well. I also get inspired by walking around the streets
of Melbourne and seeing all the new concepts other street artists come up
with.
4/...... Melbourne as a whole kicks arse for street art in
general. Other little pockets of art can be found in Fitzroy, Collingwood,
Carlton, Prahran. In my opinion Melbourne is setting the scene for the rest of
Australia.
5/...... Well at the moment I’m into people like Mr.Jago, Fatoe, and 123
Klan, just to name a few - although not seen much on the streets it still
has that really raw urban feel.
