"Find Out About Bill Hicks"

From Harlan:
I am writing an article about Bill Hicks as a feature for Modart Magazine. I am asking any artists who are interested in contributing to send in imagery. This could be anything connected to Bill Hicks and/or the two so called wars, which share so many characteristics: The so called war on Drugs and The so called war on Terrorism. Photos of street work, portraits and original illustrations are especially appreciated. 300 dpi pls. This is a tribute piece, produced by fans. If you'd like to be involved, pls contact me at Harlan@disinfo.net

Censored on the Streets of Oxford

A group of local artist in Oxford, England were invited to paint a series of murals on a wall on Cowley Road that is owned by a local estate agent
They decided to illustrate a poem about thrid world debtwritten by a local poet named Nyarai Humba.
To their surprise they discovered that it had been painted out by censors the day after it had been finished. Here's the poem:
The Myth of Third World Debt
I hear tell
that the ‘West’ claims
‘Third World’ countries
owe them a debt.
The white people them
They come to our countries
they unleash
upon we
the holocaust of slavery
the evil, parasitic, violent process
them call colonization.
What this means is
them rape Mother Africa
took her children to use as donkey
went right inside Mother Africa belly
and steal her resources
send them back home
to the ‘west’.
We the Africans,
funded the industrial revolution
with our blood, sweat, and tears and
Life.
So I don’t really understand
what the ‘west’ means
when them talk
‘bout ‘Third world debt’
I believe them have no shame
I know they full of untruth
they lie to themselves constantly
cause truth will kill them fe true.
I ask you to reconsider
who owes whom?
The west owes Africa
a debt so great
them can never
fully repay.
Though we may not say it,
don’t think we do not see it
We are silent
because white men talk too much
all in aid
of hiding the truth.
Third world debt
is a fiction of
white mans imagination.

Wooster Podcasts Are Now All Back Up
Just a quick note to say that the all of the Wooster podcasts, including the Vitamin_F mixes, interviews, and soundscenes, have all be uploaded to the new servers. To view them all, check the "Podcast" link under "Categories" on the right nav bar.
Also, the RSS feed for the podcasts seems to be working well. To receive new podcasts automatically, all you need to do is to put this url:

... into your RSS reader or iTunes.
In the next couple of wees we'll be working on a new set of podcasts for the site.
Until then, enjoy the archives. (Be sure to download the mix by Maya Hayuk. It's amazing)

Seen On The Streets of Detroit

"There is a building here in Detroit that is owned by Mike Illitch (the guy who ows the Red Wings and the Tigers). Even though that rich bastard owns the place it has remained untouched and abandoned. Sometime last year an artist (artists?) painted almost every single window in the place. Most designs are based on the ancient Myan calander that ends in 2012 (supposed doomsday if you believe that stuff). With all of the work the city is doing to prepare for the Super Bowl they have decided that one of the top priorties is to remove the paintings from every window and instead leave them blank to make it that much more obvious that the place is empty. They have already begun to take down the paintings but I grabbed some shots today of what remains."... Spencer

More Enhancements and Adjustments
You may have noticed that we've added some new features to the site today:
1. You can now forward articles to your friends directly from the site. (Click on the date link at the bottom of each article. The article will appear with the entry fields underneath it)
2. If you use de.lici.ous you can now bookmark and tag specific articles on the site by clicking on the +del link at the bottom of each article
3. If you use del.icius.us and want to submit a link to the Wooster site, all you have to do is to add the tag, for:woostercollective, and the link will automatically show up on the right hand nav bar above the links to the artists websites
4. If you're using digg, you can now submit an article on the Wooster site directly into your digg links by clicking on the +digg link
You may have also noticed some additional adjustments:
1. So that they take up less space, we've cleaned up the long list of archive links on the right nav bar by placing them in a drop down menu (We've also moved the categories to a drop down)
2. We've started to archive all of the past mastheads. So if you've missed one of them, go to the masthead category in the categories.

So we've had comments on the site for about a week and it seems to be going fairly well. We've received a lot of comments back, both positive and negative about adding permantently them. Since we're on the fence about having them on the site (I want to keep them as long as we can, Sara doesn't want them at all), we thought we'd launch a simple poll to get your feedback. While we're not sure that we'll definately go with the top result, we thought it would be interesting to see where people stand as a group on this issue.... So Vote Now below...

Favorite Event of 2005:
my trips in india and nicaragua/guatemala
simply unforgettable.

>Favorite Artist of 2005:

my 2005 favourite artist is not an artist
he's an italian peace activist called Turi Vaccaro.
On Wednesday 10 August 2005 he entered the air force base Woensdrecht in Hoogerheide (Netherlands) climbing over the fence and entering an hangar where he disarmed two F-16 airplanes , using an hammer he destroyed the instrument panels in the aircraft. His action has made it impossible to use these planes for fighting tasks (the estimated costs for restoring the planes is about 750,000 euro's). He disarmed the F16s to protest against the illegal storage of nuclear weapons at the nearby Volkel airbase and as a commemoration of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 60 years ago. The F-16s at Woensdrecht were being prepared for their war fighting tasks, including carrying and dropping the nuclear weapons based at Volkel airbase. There are currently 20 nuclear weapons at Volkel, each with a power 14 times the Hiroshima bomb.
Now he's in jail and he has also been ordered to pay 750,000 euro damages to the Ministry of Defence
Maybe he's not an artist but this is the best vandalize act i've ever seen.

ABOVE'S EUROPEAN TRAVELS, 2005. ZURICH, SWITZERLAND.
"Catching the train from Milan to Zurich was an interesting experience for two different reasons, First because of the large floods that were happening in Switzerland at that time. Most of the trains had to re-route because of the high waters flooding the train rails. I personally didn't mind at all, I viewed the occasion as an opportunity to see more of the wet but beautiful Swiss countryside. The second part was the fact that in Switzerland it's commonplace and legal for people to carry rifles and guns with them. In my train cabin there were a handful of young soldier looking kids in their late teens, early twenties with fully loaded rifles sitting next to them while they drank canned beers to kill time until the arrival into Zurich.
For better of for worse I only had 3 days to spend in Zurich as I needed to get to Barcelona later that week to fly up to Iceland to meet friends, and partake in a street expo.
I was grateful to be able to do some street works in Zurich, but not to the level or degree that I wanted to. None the less Zurich was very friendly, and hospitable.
I want to thank Cutmaster Fifi for The Sticker, and yogurt hookup: Remos One for your floor to sleep on, and Roman for the skateboard, hospitality and tour of Zurich!"
... Above

Overlapping Geometric forms and structures. Not my best can control or lines but had fun with the Tiger style blood effects on the red arrows.

Cantaloupe in Springtime with this print....weird associations of mine! The Composition of the fuchsia bar, and the weathered wood against the blue sky backdrop made my eyes happy.

A nice day for a bike ride.

One line, for the One Time.

Contrubute to Our "Graffiti And Street Art Arrest Map" - First One Is New York City
So this morning we started to build the map of the specific locations in New York where people have been arrested for graffiti or street art. We should have it integrated into the site soon. Send in the location (street intersection is fine) and a three or four line story about it and we'll pin it to the map. We're interested to see where the highest concentration of graf related arrests are in the city.
You can check out the map as it grows by clicking here.
