Shit We're Diggin'... The Public Art of Seyed Avavi

"Signs of the Times" was conceived in direct response to the location and function of the traffic utility boxes, and uses the pedestrian stick figure in order to present a series of poetic vignettes. This site specific project utilizes a context familiar to the viewer, in order to present situations that are funny, accessible and engaging. Each artwork aims to be read as a sign, which asks one to reflect on some of the issues surrounding the nature of our lives as human beings.

The designs for each of the seventeen boxes were developed in collaboration with eight students from Emeryville High School, (Taruna Aggarwal, Brittany Drummer, Alonzo Gomez, Lisa Kuma, Sanjeshni Lata, Kevin Lazo, Jose Martinez and Ashlee Sentman) over a period of two months.

"I met with ten high school students over the course of ten weeks to explore this concept; encouraging them to create their own "portrait of self" utilizing the various tools and techniques of photography. Starting with pin-hole cameras and then using 35mm, the participants engaged in a process of insightful play. Afterwards, they digitally manipulated and constructed their images; layering them with meanings, moods and emotions. The participants studied the unique characteristics of the site and set out to use the medium of large format prints, to create pieces that at first glance referred to the advertising images that are displayed in similar "store" contexts. However, these images would, on closer examination, reveal greater depth and complexity."

DUIU Invisible NYC in collaboration

DUIU

Invisible NYC in collaboration with Metro Color Collision is pleased to present DIY: The Aesthetics of Life. Unlike other group shows, the artists here have created works directly pertaining to their lives as artists who choose to dissociate from corporate strongholds and make their own clothes, jewelry, stuffed animals or anything that turns unique art objects into a lifestyle and vice versa. Did they figure out the perfect existence to incorporate punk rock productivity and creative innovations? Their creative drive is entirely infused into their daily existence; for them, art is inextricably linked to life as creation is the sole means of survival. This exhibition hopes to convey not only their DIY aesthetics of self-reliance and self-sufficiency but also a philosophy carried on in the true spirit of modern anarchy.

From earlier situationist ideas regarding radical currents of change came the modern notions of social anarchy that these artists embrace. Their work is redolent with many of these ideas including the reclaiming of the contemporary industrial environment, the refusal to fall prey to marketing schemes and enticing labels (think AdBusters), and the liberation of the person from the social and psychological impositions inevitable in urban situations. The artists featured in this exhibition provide a new vision of an old concept that seeks to investigate and assess the mechanics of modern life.

Each featured artist has adapted the DIY ideas that we are presenting as objects of use but more importantly as singular pieces of art. The work of Milton Carter, Joanna Stein, Christine Cioffari, Kayte Terry, Vadis Turner and Kim Cherubin presents an alternative to brand names and corporate logos in this group exhibition. This show is curated by Metro Color Collision, the curatorial team of Julie Fishkin and Matt Lucas. Metro Color Collision is an independent curatorial collective whose aim is to combine creativity and originality in an idea-based exhibition without space constrictions and specific wall obligations. In existence since 2003, MCC works with local artists and galleries as a continuous conduit for creative energy.

DIY: The Aesthetics of Life will be on view from August 4th to September 3rd, 2005. There will be an opening reception on August 4th from 6 to 9 PM.

Wooster Hits Nolita - This Coming Monday, July 25

This coming Monday, July 25th, Sara and I will be moderating a terrific panel on street art at the Mc Nally Robinson Bookstore in Nolita, not too far from where we live.

It's a fantastic panel consisting of some of our favorite people - the amazing Martha Cooper, Dan Witz, Michael DeFeo, and Kelly Burns.

We'll be meeting up with everyone for beers afterwards, so drop us a note if you plan on coming along. We'll most likely hit the Spring Street Lounge after things wrap up at Mc Nally Robinson.

See you there!.

Beautiful City Billboard Fee

Our friend Dixon in Canada sent us a note yesterday with what we thought was a terrific idea. Them.ca has launched a new project called "The Beautiful City Billboard Fee" (BCBF) in which billboard companies pay an annual fee with proceeds going to support public art. Sort of balancing out the scales a bit.

According to a Pollara public opinion poll, a majority of Canadians support the institution of a fee on billboard advertising that would be redirected into public art. A total of 2006 Canadian adults participated in the survey, 66% of which supported the fee and 11% were opposed. (?2.2%, 19/20) This result was closely mirrored in Toronto, with 66% of participants supporting the proposal and only 15% opposed (?8.3%, 19/20).

The primary objectives of the BCBF are: 1) beautification of the city; 2) creation of employment for artists and 3) diversifying access to visual communication in public spaces to reflect the creativity and multiplicity that exists in Canada's urban centres.

Them.ca proposes a charge of $6.00 per sq. foot of billboard space per year. Those funds will then be redirected towards public art. Thus, five 15'x25' billboards could subsidize one small art piece for the cost of $10 000.00 (allowing $1250.00 for administrative and maintenance expenses incurred by city and granting bodies).

On a larger scale, the estimated 5000 billboards in Toronto could generate six million dollars for public art per year.

Jim Garrard, a previous Executive Director of the Toronto Arts Council said - "...To me there's room for advertising in the world in moderation and in balance with other kinds of messages. We don't have that. Our 'pure' artists are certainly at a disadvantage when it comes to resources. A reasonable balance between conflicting agendas is what we always hope for. Seeing more of the best work of our best artists in public places would contribute to that. That would also make this city and the world better places to live in,""

For more information including: quotes, sources, FAQ, a copy of the full proposal, resources, images and the findings from poll, fo to - http://bcbf.them.ca

New York | July 21| Tony Bones and Resk

Orchard Street Art Gallery presents Tonybones & Resk
This Thursday night, July 21, from 7-10pm

Tonybones hails from the wilds of east texas, not much is known about
this illusive wretch other than that he has a taste for cheap liquor
and a passion for powertools. once thought to be part alligator,
researchers have concluded that he is in fact just ugly.

little or less is known about Resk. while mining for precious ore in
the hills, south american miners found him drinking the blood of a
large chilean woman. some signs point to mental retardation but most
who know him agree he's probably just drunk.

the two of these apes plan to make a really big mess, and eventually
set the gallery on fire. no less than four fights will break out and
at least 3 people will be killed. no arrests will be made as the
police will be busy trying to solve the case of the missing twinkie.

"Just wanted to let you know about a collaboration wall that went up here in Amsterdam on Sunday afternoon. For the cheap price of a "few" beers 7 shots of tequila (actually turned out more like 21 shots) and materials, Galo arranged for a new collaboration wall to be drawn in Cafe De Buurvrouw here in Amsterdam's Red Light District. Armed with a hand full of black markers, 5 hours later the wall was finished, just in time for the bars nightly dregs to begin to arrive.

The artists included; Galo, Justin Kees, Two Things, Aiko, Tina Villa, Abnormal, Cold World, and Imtek. For more pictures click here.
