EMPTE EYES Reports on the Neckface / Datefarmers Show in San Fran

EMPTE EYES: "just got back fr/ neck's show! It was suprisingly really fun and a really well put together show.
After meeting the "goat killer" himself I found a new respect for Neckface! After seeing some of first tags go up in NYC in 2002, move abroad and come back to the United States of Neckface, seeing him in every publication on the web, magazines and exciting the outsider street art world suprised me to say the least.
Talking with other writers to avg. joe, everyone wants to know who is this guy? and why? It's not neccesarily who he is but what he brings to the table! The raw excitement and youth of the ambitious kid "beat with the ugly stick" reminds us what being motivated and dedicated is all about. Not the talent but the drive. It seems like everyone is striving to be "so" individualistic especially these days, where "SATANS BRIDE" effortlessly came about showed and exemplified what being an individual is really is, that is doing what you believe and not wavering in ambiguoty.
"I feel good about the show, it's all coming together better than I thought." as Neckface should! I was very impressed with the welded car hood installations, his welded masks, collage paintings and his cameo photo op! He turned me into a fan over night reminding me why I started Graf.
The always impressive "Luggage Store Gallery" will continue the exhibit with the amazing "Datefarmer's" duo @ 1007 Market st. @ 6th st. San Francisco wed-sat.12-5 pm until Feb. 5 2005.

Tsunami Donations Update - Burgerman Steps Up - 25 More Als Available -
As we head into the weekend, we thought we'd give you an update on the Wooster donations for Southern Asia and let you know about "Wooster Raffles", something we've been putting together with Swoon, D*Face, and some other amazing artists:First, after a bit of recounting today, we just realized that we have about 25 more sketchbook pages from Mysterious Al to give to people who donate more than $20. Because of this, we've put the donation button back up on the left hand nav bar. Once these 25 go, unfortunately there are no more of them.
But don't worry, Jon Burgerman has stepped in for round 2....
Burgerman, one of our favorite artists (and one of the nicest guys you will ever meet in your life) is donating 100 of his amazing doodles to the cause. Most of you know Jon's work, but if you don't, check out his website here. So as soon as we run out of Al's sketchbook pages, for every donation over $20, Jon will send you one of his wonderful sketches. Here's it straight from Jon:
I was impressed by Mysterious' amazing donation to the Wooster collection for the Tsunami Disaster appeal and thought about what I could give to help. Basically the only thing I'm half good at is doodling and as Al proved doodles can help. So I'm going to sit down and draw 100 drawings for Wooster to use to help drum up some more much needed donations. I've started already so you can see what they're goin to be like (each will be different and of.. ahem.. variable quality). Thanks for your efforts so far - we must all continue to do what we can to help those affected by the terrible tragedy.

But wait - there's more. Beginning next week we're going to be adding another layer to the donation drive. We're calling it "Wooster Raffles" Here's how it will work. For every $10 you donate (or have already donated), you will receive one virtual raffle ticket. So if you donate (or have donated) $30, you receive 3 raffle tickets. If you donate (or have donated) $70 you will receive 7.
So at the end of each week, for as long as people want to donate to the cause, we will be picking - at random from the pool of raffle tickets- winners who will receive an amazing piece of art that have been donated specifically for this cause. Artists who will be donating their work for the raffle include Swoon, D*Face, and many others.
Here's why we are doing a raffle - Many artists have sent us emails offering to donate work to be auctioned off to raise money. But if we went forward with an auction, and if we did indeed put these pieces up on the site, they will go to the highest bidder for, in some cases, hundreds of dollars. This means that the price for each of them will go up so high that the only people who would ultimately "win" the pieces would be those people who have the most money, not necessarily those people who want to help the most or those people who are the true fans of the art and the artists.
Most of the people who come to the Wooster site each day don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on a piece of art. Because of this, an auction on the Wooster site would not be really for the Wooster community at all. It would raise money but it would not involve the Wooster community of artists and art lovers.
Because of this, we came up with an idea, a solution - "Wooster Raffles". In this way everyone has a shot at recieving a piece of art no matter how much money you donate. In this way the artwork will still be used to raise money, but will not necessarily go to the people who have the most money. Make sense?
So beginning this weekend we'll start to let you know some of the artwork that will be included in the raffle. The pieces, and the artists, are amazing. So keep donating! If you donate now, you will be receiving work from Al or Jon's sketchbooks and you will also be entered into the raffle. We don't want to stop until we hit $10.000. And we're half way there!

Catchin Up With.. Chris Silva in Chicago

"Tragic Beauty"
Juan Chavez, Mike Genovese, Cody Hudson and Chris Silva.
March 4 - March 27, 2005
Open End Gallery
2000 W. Fulton *310
Chicago, IL. 60612
(312)738-2140
This is probably the most ambitious show that any of us has endeavored to put together. We have commited to making the most of our limited resources in order to create a beautiful and hopefully inspirational space within this very large gallery. When this show comes down it will continue in a sense, as most of the work will then be installed in various public locations throughout the city of Chicago. Time has flown by since we originally conceived of this show, and our busy schedules and/or flaky artistic minds have contributed to the fact that we have procured minimal funding for this show and are going to be coming out of our rather shallow pockets in order to make this show happen. Sorry, but that CTA mosaic commission money of mine is running out quickly.
So yeah, I came up with this limited edition print idea after realizing that my new printer does archival quality prints. Additionally, in acknowledgment of the recent tragedy overseas, and perhaps to ease my guilt for trying to raise money for some dumb art project at this time, I have decided to give $500 of the money raised by this print to a reputable tsunami relief fund. I welcome any recommendations regarding which one I should donate to. If the image speaks to you and you feel like you can help us out, we'd really appreciate it.
Here is the link to the page where you can view the print image and purchase one if you choose to do so:
Thank you so much for your time, and I hope everyone's having great new year.

An Update from Antonia
Yesterday we put up some photographs of some artwork that was seen on Brighton Beach in Brooklyn.Antonia writes:
Hi there at wooster! Maybe you know this already all. I believe, those pasteups at brighton beach were made by SOLOVEI. She is a friend of SWOON, and had an exhibition with her in Berlin oneandhalf years ago. She makes fantastic drawings and sticks them as originals outside. You can't find much about her in the net, Some examples from my photolog are below.
You can also see more of her work on StickerNation here.
To me SOLOVEI is on of the most interesting artists outside!
Thank you + take care, Antonia"

Seen On The Streets Of Eindhoven, Netherlands

Misfitneverland sent us this photo from Eindhoven, Netherlands. He says:
"The text on the piece says: "Marokkanen zijn lief". That's means "Moroccans are sweet"(or Maroccans are nice) in dutch.. I think it's a stencil series to make us aware that Maroccans are nice people as well...(Tragically) there's still a lot of hate here against foreigners that live in this country, especially because people are scared of muslim fundamentalists.. It's really a shame but it's nice to see that there are some groups in our society that (with streetart as an instrument) try to show 'the rest' that foreigners are just as normal as you and me.. All the best for now and good luck with all your actions, GREAT initiative!!

The Urban Guerilla Projekt - An Explanation

"Greetings from Vancouver BC Canada! We(The Urban Guerillas) are a collaboration of artists and skateboarders working together to counter-act anti- skateboarding activity (skate spots being shut down, destroyed, or made unusable by the installation of anti-skate devices) and anti street art activity. For over a year now, we have been promoting street skating by reclaiming old skate spots, creating new ones, and using 'street' space to express ourselves, and communicate our purpose and presence... All in the name of keeping skateboarding in it's natural environment, The Streets. Through the use of posters, stencils, stickers and apparel, we aim to rally skateboarders and artists alike to "Reclaim The Streets!" With countless hundreds of hours 'expressing' ourselves through our chosen medium, and loving it more and more each day, we thought we might contribute to the great 'Collective' of other street artists from around the globe who have inspired us. Anyways, keep up the awesome effort! We are also currently working on our website, and we will let you know about it when it is up. Thanks again and Happy New Year, *The Urban Guerillas* " Reclaim The Streets!"

Tsunami Donations Update - Sketchbook Pages
Another quick update on the Wooster donations for Southern Asia. A few minutes ago we took in the last donation to receive one of the 100 sketchbook pages from Mysterious Al's black books. Unfortunately they are now all gone. The money we have raised so far is absolutely amazing. We've now raised close to $5,000. All in less than a week! Please know that we still have more of the adFunture Rubbles so keep the donations coming.
In the next couple of days we will be letting you know about another incentive to donate. The next one is really cool as well.
Thanks again!

Catchin Up With.. Empte Eyes in San Francisco

"I wanted to pass along these photos from the hanging of "Islands and Bridges" a show at Upper Playgrounds Fifty 24F Gallery in San Francisco curated by the Workhorse Collective. It opens tonight, Thursday January 6th 2005,7:30-9:30 p.m.
I just got back from hanging the show and must say it looks amazing! The gallery is filled with so much amazing artwork it could have easily been 2 seperate shows. This show is definetly going to be off the handle!
Pisa 73's utilization of post consumer product pieces are absolutely stunning, Pete Woallenger brought out the spinning pirate ship steering wheel, Logan Hicks never ceasing to stop you in your tracks, evol ct ink rockin it , adam 5100, everything but the kitchen sink is in this one, However I managed to bring the window frames from the house featured in hitchcock's classic "Vertigo" and revamp them with a more permanent purpose.
If you're in or around S.F. This is a great chance to see an exhibition featuring worldwide artists breaking boundaries with the stencil artform. If you dont get a chance to see the show in person check it out in the coming issue of Vapor's Magazine.
see you there.
cheers!" -EMPTE EYES

Tsunami Donations Update - Mysterious Al Rocks
Just wanted to give you guys a quick update. It was less then 24 hours ago when we first put up the fact that if you donated more than $20 to the Wooster donation fund for South Asia, Mysterious Al would send you a page at random from his prized sketchbooks. Well the response has been absolutely amazing. We've received 60 donations today and now how only 40 of the pages left. In the last 24 hours alone we've raised nearly $2,500, which brings the total to around $3,500.So if you want a page from Al's books, donate soon because we only have 100 total and they will all be gone very soon.
Thanks again everyone! And Al - you're the best.

Tsunami Donations Update - New: Pages from Mysterious Al's Sketchbooks
A quick update on the Tsunami donations that people have been making on the Wooster website:First, in the last few days since we've but up the donations button, as a group the Wooster community has raised close to $1,500.00 USD for Tsunami relief. That's an awsome amount, as we had no idea what to expect. Some donations are as small as $5.00, so a great amount of you have been making donation. Thank you so much!
A quick note on where the money will go - When we put up the donation button last week we stated that we'd be donating the money on your behalf to Doctors Without Borders / Medecins Sans Frontiere. But in the last 24 hours, Medecins Sans Frontiere has said that they have reached their maximum amount of donations for Asia (not a bad problem to have!) and that they are no longer taking donations for the Tsunami relief. Because of this, we have decided to donate the Wooster group collections to Oxfam. We hope you all agree with this as Oxfam is a terrific organization and very worthy of our support. You can learn more about Oxfam here.
And finally, here's a new, incredibly cool, incentive to donate....

We're extremely pleased to let you know that Mysterious Al, a true street art "geezer" (as Chaz and Galo would say), has joined us in helping to raise money by making the following donation.
Here's it straight from Al himself --
"Seeing as to how out of hand this tsunami shit is getting, I can no longer commit to just throwing coins into buckets on Oxford Street.
I'd like to help as much as I can - and, having very limited money or rescourses, I would like to donate pages from my personal sketchbooks to the tsunami relief funds.
I will tear out a sketchbook page for the first 100 people to donate $20 USD (?10) or more to the Wooster fund. I will arrange for all posting (regular, non-recorded, cheapest post) to anywhere in the world.
Some of my sketchbook pages feature some of the best artists in the world - including Flying Fortress, Pete Fowler, The London Police, Freaklub, D*face, PMH, Dave The Chimp (and unfortunately, myself) amongst many others.
Please note that sketchbook pages will be torn out by one of my mates at random, and pages vary in quality (ahem). They are just sketches, after all...
Best for 2005- mysterious al"
Here's a snap of Al's sketchbooks that the pages will be coming out from...

So as you will notice we've just added a new donation button on the left hand nav bar. If you would like to donate and receive a page from Al's cherished sketchbooks, donate now. The donation is separate from the adFunture Rubble, so if you want both, you will need to donate twice. (Don't forget to include your address)
Thanks, Al! And thanks everyone for donating.

Reason for the Lack of Updates
Just a short note to explain the lack of updates on the site. The main reason is that the program we use to update the Wooster site, Blogger, sucks. For the past few months it's been down almost every day. We hate it. If the Wooster site wasn't so damn big, we'd switch over to Movable Type (an alternative to Blogger) in a heartbeat. If you know anything about weblog design and programming, and would like to help us reprogram the archives and move from awful Blogger to something else, please let us know. We'd be very appreciative for any help we can get. Lately we've come to hate Blogger.
