Profile: Bunnymatic

Age: 35
Hometown: san mateo, ca
Where do you now live?: san francisco, ca
Where would you most like to live?: nyc
Who was your first "hero" in life?: an architect turned painter working in carmel -i forget his name, but i was so inspired that he had done the grind for a while until he was making enough on the art that he could buy a gallery and just paint.
What is your favorite thing to do on your day off from work?: rock climbing
What is your favorite color?: it kind of depends on where it is (the wall, clothing, lights etc)but probably some kind of red-purple
Who (or what) do you love?: i love my neighborhood. an eclectic
mix of cultures and people and street art. it makes for interesting walks to the grocery store. i also feel at home when i walk into the local market, or video store and chat with the people who work there. being a "local" is a nice feeling.

Who and/or what are some of your influences?

It's probably pretty obvious that Dick Bruna and Shepard Fairey are the two main ones. That is, they were very influential at the beginning since i was pretty much ripping them both off. As my work has grown, i'd say DAVe Warnke is a great influence. i've had the chance to speak with him a few times which was great. seeing his silly cartoony kind of stuff in galleries gave me a kind of validation on my own work. there's lots of street art in my neighborhood - from stickers and posters to spray-painted tags and stencils on the sidewalk. i don't know the artists names, but those definitely influence my work.

What other artists do you most admire?

tom friedman is great. he had a show here a few years back. i suppose, like the other influences, seeing some of the just plain funny pieces. not that he's not a serious artist, but he clearly is having a lot of fun with the pieces he's making. andy goldsworthy does beautiful work as well. it has some similar lines to the graffitti art in that his pieces, like the street art, is temporary. at some point his ice sculptures melt, or the wind blows his arranged flowers out of arrangement. in the same way, weather and department of public works come and take away stickers and graffitti. it makes me appreciate some of the art on the street better because i know that if i hadn't been there at that time i might never have seen it.

How would you describe your art to someone who could not see it?

silly pictures of robotic bunnies, kitty kats, and other characters in silly situations with silly captions. it strives to be nonsensical, ridiculous, funny and pleasing to look at.

What other talent would most like to have?

i'd like to be a better painter.

What do you fear the most?

being seen as a complete idiot

What is your greatest ambition?

to have enough money/income that i wouldn't have to "work" - to retire young - and i could basically persue my variety of art stuffs
