WHAT
50,000 members of the NRA, the National Rifle Association, are coming to Pittsburgh for a convention. Dick Cheney is the keynote speaker. The NRA was featured prominently in the movie Bowling for Columbine. Former NRA president Charlton Heston:

"Mainstream America is depending on you--counting on you--to draw your sword and fight for them. These people have precious little time or resources to battle misguided Cinderella attitudes, the fringe propaganda of the homosexual coalition, the feminists who preach that it's a divine duty for women to hate men, blacks who raise a militant fist with one hand while they seek preference with the other..."

SO WE WANT TO MAKE KNOWN, THROUGH VISUALS IN THE STREETS OF PITTSBURGH, THAT WE AIN'T HAVIN' IT. SEND US YOUR STUFF! SEND US A LOT OF STUFF! SEND US POWERFUL STUFF! BANG BANG!

From our friend Ange Taggart

From our friend Ange Taggart in England: "In February 2004 about 300 people swept through the Metro in Paris and expressed their opinion about advertising on billboards throughout the underground system. 62 of them were arrested and have been sued for ?1.000.000 in damages by Metrobus(RATP). As a gesture of openness and good marketing RATP has provided blank space in a metro station with the name "Liberte D'expression".

"Five on Five" with CUE and Adam Neate

We recently invited a group of our favorite artists to ask five questions of another artist who they knew and admired. After answering the questions, the tables then become turned and five q's are sent in the opposite direction. So for our first installment of 'Five on Five", here's CUE from So Fuzzy Crew vs. Adam Neate.

Adam Neate

Adam Neate: "Yes, I have thought long and hard what questions i could possibly ask Mr Fuzzy Edwards. Here goes.. Question #1: List the first 5 words that come into your mind when you hear the word "Art" (don't cheat by thinking too much about it)

CUE: "START, SMART, FART, TART, BUMBACLART"

(my new spring/summer collection)

Adam Neate: "Question #2. With al lot of attention recently on "street artists" I feel the "street musicians" are being neglected. Who are your favorite street musicians and why?"

CUE: " I saw a really FUNNY 'street musician' the other day in the BART station. He had a harp and I'm sure he had just come from a Rennaissance fair... he was singing a kind of song that was totally 'HEY NONNY NONNY NO' inna kind of medieval stylee and he was twanging his harp tunefully and he had a kind of fake Olde English accent...It was very Monty Python but he was dead serious.... it was just really weird that he was trying to pull this off in Downtown SF... no-body was getting it at all. I quite like the guy who just goes around with a Traffic cone and plays that like a trumpet... he is rubbish.

Adam Neate: "Have you seen the red haired tramp with the harmonica?"

CUE: "No I havent, but he sounds totally sweet.... I hate accordion players on the tube, they are RUBBISH. It should be legal to hunt and kill accordion players...

Adam Neate: "Question #3. What's the weirdest most bizarre thing you have ever witnessed on the streets of London? (doesn't need to be art related)"

CUE: "I saw this guy once with a fuzzy polar fleece jumper and he had this large chunky brown rectangular design on the front of it, it had a very strange crusty texture so I got a bit closer and realised it was a large square of nutty shit that he had pressed onto the front of his top... it smelt disgusting and I just couldnt believe it was real... i mean , c'mon! w.t.f........does he get it dry cleaned? the guy dressed as a duck playing the bagpipes on hampstead heath must rank pretty high up in my 'bizarre' list.

Adam Neate: "Question #4. Are you a Sunset or Sunrise person?"

CUE: "I like Sunrises, we used to throw sunset parties in California on this beach and the sunsets there were just mindblowing... Sunsets are ok but I always get a bit sad at Sunset time, y'know , the end of a day and all that.

Adam Neate: "Question #5. If you could bottle "pure Evil" where would it come from?"

CUE: "The Source of PURE EVIL would come from a dark, pool of water that is the source of the river Styx , its in the Wood of the Suicides in Hades. Its where all of the Mung beans in the world come from and the water stinks like death. This guy below is the Mung bean guardian , you have to get past him to get to the Source.

CUE in his new Spring/Summer Collection

CUE: "Question #1. If you had a time machine what would you do with it, where would you go? (only one time travel journey allowed)"

Adam Neate: "I'm quite a Nihilistic when it comes to the past and future so I guess I would just set it to somewhere and see what happened.

CUE: "Question #2. Was it really hard work coming up with 100 different designs for the skateboards you recently painted? did it drive you nuts?"

Adam Neate: "100 boards? What 100 boards?....oh yeah that month period when I walked around my flat banging pots and pans singing the dictionary, talking to water and drinking it when they back chatted me, and wearing jumpers with nutty shit on them.

CUE: "Question #3. What is the most bizarre thing you've ever seen in London?"

Adam Neate: "A couple years ago an inebriated friend and myself had just left a squat party in the early hours of the morning. We were waiting in the street outside for a few more people to leave the party, We noticed a pile of garbage bags in the street and decided to do do somersaults into the bags for fun. A complete stranger who happened to be watching decided to mimic us by doing a front flip into the same pile of bags. There was a loud crash and when the guy got up we noticed he had jumped on to a pile of broken glass, he then looked down to realize he had a 10 inch shard of glass sticking out of either side of his wrist. So I made the stupid decision to pull it out. It was like a scene from Monty Python, blood was flying everywhere. We managed to find some insulation tape in the squat and bandage his arm closed and send him on his way home. The bizarre thing was the guy never once spoke or screamed through out the whole time, just stood there gazing into space."

CUE: "Question #4. What superhero do you most relate to, and why? what super-powers do you have?

Adam Neate: "Its gotta be Super man 3 when gets really pissed off and starts flicking peanuts, boozing and pushes the Leaning Tower of Pisa, he should of just carried on destroying things, would of been allot more of a funny film. My only mentionable super power is the inept ability to give birth to plague infested invisible ducks.

CUE: "Question #5. Can you please analyze modern contemporary culture and tell me how your work plays a significant part in the remains of our post-modernist culture ?

Adam Neate: "Mmmm... Modern contemporary art in some ways is allot like a time machine full of invisible ducks...it's already been used in the past and it stinks of farts."

"Just a little bit about me

name- SIMON of the PTC crew

age - 28

Live - Toronto Ontario, Canada

My First Hero - Mr. Dressup

What do I love - Anyone who has a motivation to want to do something and to fulfill the goals and dreams

My influences - Like most people I guess Twist was in the forefront for half a decade prior to anyone else doing a large vocabulary of reocurring characters. Other visual artists are the older original graffers from the Toronto area such as Ren, It was and still is the greatest thing to see his stickers bombs and tags around the downtown core and nearby alleys.

Newer artists such as my man Kasmer who weekly blows my mind with the quality of work he does and the motivation he has given me to paint harder and more in the last year has lifted my work to another level . Medium who just recently had a posting on here is a very talented guy who loves various subject matter as I. Sinus who still gets up in the cold Bad lands of Alberta is a huge motivation, but he is an artist of the turn tables and his music he supplies me gets me into the zone to paint and draw while at home.

My recent work is alien like creators which are part metal and part alien fesh. The reoccuring face is my trade mark and an alien symbol to tell the aliens the planet and colony there from.

Peace Simon Ptc"

Announcing an exciting new project!!!

STOP BUSH: A MULTIMEDIA ARCHIVE AND TOOLKIT
Call for Submissions (DEADLINE: April 1, 2004)
anti-Bush movies, protest graphics, design, and street art from 2000-2004 sponsored by Clamor Magazine, Counter Productive Industries, justseeds, and Rooftop Films

Since the day Bush stepped into the White House, there has been a torrent of visual art created to get him out. Much of this amazing work has come and gone - hoisted as a sign at a protest, wheatpasted on a wall one early morning, or broadcast on public access cable. Now in 2004, as we build for his eviction, we are compiling many of these anti-Bush movies, graphics, stencils, posters, and photographs into a dvd/print booklet project called "Stop Bush: A Multimedia Archive and Toolkit."

If you use culture for resistance, this will be your toolkit. "Stop Bush" will provide inspiration to cover public walls, content to set up film screenings, and lessons in propaganda.

As the name suggests, there are two purposes for this project:

- to archive for posterity this genre of political art; and
- to gather and present materials that can be used this summer and fall.

With these purposes in mind, submissions will be selected for inclusion in the DVD and print booklet based on their aesthetic and critical qualities and their tactical usefulness.

NOTE
- There is no admission fee, though donations are welcome (checks in any amount made out to Clamor Magazine).
- Video material should be submitted on VHS. There are no lengthrestrictions, though shorter is better. Trailers and clips from features are encouraged.
- Print and design material may be submitted in paper or electronic formats. All graphics and photographs of street art submitted electronically should be high-resolution tif or jpg files. Email to stopbush@justseeds.org or mail a CD to the address below.
- All materials must be received by April 1, 2004
- Materials will not be returned
(This project is primarily for already-produced material, though original writing and artwork on this topic should be sent to Clamor Magazine for consideration by June 20, 2004.)

MAILING ADDRESS:

justseeds/DVD
POBox 476971
Chicago, IL 60647
email: stopbush@clamormagazine.org

Please interpret the theme broadly, though we are particularly interested in work that covers the following topics:

[Elections]

- 2004 election - how to combat vote fraud, getting out the vote -
- campaign finance

[Events/Protests]

Los Angeles | March 13 | Transforms

Millicent Gallery is proud to present Transforms featuring the photographic work of David Meanix, Jorge Gonzalez and JB Ghuman, Jr. These three rising stars of the art photography world each explore shifting identities, perceptions and realities though their startlingly individual lenses.

The intense colors and moody tone of Jorge Gonzalez’s “story board” series invites the viewer into the surreal world of his subconscious, each piece a chapter in a story with no end. Inspired by dreams, these images are explorations of his psyche that create a parallel world of illusion that leads us “towards the within.”

David Meanix’s photo-sculptures meticulously re-contextualize his subjects. Using a highly labor intensive process, Meanix forms papier mache “photographic sculptural masks” that veil, alter or transform the subject’s original identity. These mosaic portraits are then re-photographed in completely new surroundings revealing hidden personas and new identities. Each enigmatic portrait questions the roles we play, the masks we wear and asks: “When is it safe to show our true selves?”

Using photography manipulated with crayon and computer graphics, JB Ghuman, Jr. conveys the meaning beneath the image. Through self-portraits and studio models, Ghuman’s bold use of color and text forces us to consider the meaning beneath the beauty, to see things not just as they are but for their essence. What appears at first glance is radically shifted to another truth with bold strokes of color and graffiti-like scrawls of text.

Profile: Adept

Age: 20 something...
Hometown: London
Where do you now live? North of London - im too poor to live there anymore :(
Where would you most like to live?: Loads of places - Amsterdam for the cool, laid back people and the graff scene, Austrailia because the sunny weather would mean I could get up a lot more than I can in rainy old London, and New York - just because.
Who was your first "hero" in life?: My dad.
What is your favorite thing to do on your day off from work?: Explore the city, buy records, think of new ideas and then get them up on the street.
What is your favorite color?: Hmmm well im wearing alot of camouflage stuff at the moment so maybe green, but im using lots of deep shades of red in my pieces because it looks dope.
Who (or what) do you love?: Women. - Do I need to be more specific?, ok good looking drunk women with loose morals who are into graff and impressed by my drunken breakdancing - they are a rare breed but worth finding.

Who and/or what are some of your influences?

There's way too many to list here. Basically im inspired and influenced by anyone who hasnt compromised themselves or their work in order to be successful. Im also inspired to make the best work I can come up with when I see loads of unoriginal crap that just rips off the hardworking people who have taken the time to bring something fresh to the game. I must also give an honourable mention my fellow crew members CA ONE, BLAM and OHNE - not only because they are all very talented and full of enthusiasm for graffiti, but also because if I dont they will kill me...

What other artists do you most admire?

Directors: Chris Cunningham, Jonathan Glazer, David Fincher, Spike Jonze, Darren Aronofsky.
Artists: Pollock, Rothko
Graffiti Writers: Again, theres way too many to list all of them here - but if you love graff and you aint just biting whats already out there, then big up yourself! - Writers I respect for that include: YU, Toasters, D-face, Kid Acne, PONK, The London Police, ATG crew, Chu and Banksy - oh and Toxic for ignoring all the "rules" - the guy has no style, but he deserves the key to the city for his dedication to graffiti - TOX for mayor!

How would you describe your art to someone who could not see it?

Hmmm well ive been told some of my stuff has a very graphic design look to it which is true I guess, but thats just because I like my work to look sharp and be bold and neat. - I would descibe it as a sign of life and creativity in the city - someone saying "im here" and encouraging others to look around and get involved.

What other talent would you most like to have?

It would be cool to be able to speak some other languages, but other than that Im pretty damn talented as it is so I wont be greedy.

What do you fear the most?

Other than getting arrested? Probably loosing my eyesight - id be screwed without that. Apart from that im a firm believer in facing your fears...but then you are asking someone whose idea of fun is exploring railway systems and derilict buildings so maybe my notion of fear isnt quite the same as everyone elses...

What is your greatest ambition?
For myself - to be in a position where I can see the world and meet cool people. For my work - for people to enjoy what I do and hopefully remember it and be inspired.

Banksy "Thinker" Statue Update

From Clabbski: "the 'Drinker' statue in London that you recently published on your web site, is in fact an original Banksy, it was positioned near where I work in Paddington in London for the last few months and then suddenly disappeared. Presumably it is the same one Professor X spotted near the British Museum. I've attached a picture of it at Paddington London from www.stateoftheart.co.uk

Also from which comes the folowing quote:

Inspired by Tesco's Buy One Get One Free (or BOGOF campaign) Banksy has moved into sculpture. The idea is to make two sculptures - one to be sold and one to be donated to the public. Naturally some lucky local council won't be able to choose the site. They'll just wake up one morning to find that a new monument has been cemented in place overnight.

Note: Banksy's thinker is not bronze but some kind of filler that is painted to look like bronze. That is one cone that is part of the statue and someone has added an extra one that seems to have stayed with this version. (The base however is a solid block of concrete)

What other artists do you most admire?

Decline, a guy putting up massive amounts of hand-drawn stickers around here. Also the boys and girls at Stencilrevolution.com, and all the artists featured on this site.

How would you describe your art to someone who could not see it?

I make stencils out of pictures and drawings I find interesting. I don't have a strong message with what I do, I just want to brighten up the boring streets a little. I paint on a lot of different things, all have in common that they are pretty easy to remove. For the streets I mostly paint on stickers, legoboards, styrofoam, vinyl records, tiles, cardboard and wooden boards. Then if someone hates it, they can just take it down instead of calling the cops. If people like some of my stuff, it's also easy to take it home. I hope my vinyls won't hang on the walls for ever. Most of the people I'm talking to about this don't even know how a stencil works, so most of the time I'm trying to explain how I do it rather than why I do it.

What other talent would most like to have?

I wish I had a talent for hand- drawing.

What do you fear the most?

Impotence

What is your greatest ambition?

To develop my skills. Constantly getting better at whatever I'm trying to do.
