Profile: Travis Millard

It was a bit more than a year ago when our
friend John Esguerra first hipped us to the amazing art -  and devious mind - of

/>Age: 28
Hometown: Kansas City
/>Where do you now live?: Los Angeles
Where would
you most like to live?:
a log cabin. but it’s like, a solar powered log
motor home. i would probably live in a forest and drive around looking for
berries. and the animals would be cool with it because it’s a log cabin. i would
also like to live on a cloud. one that could swoop down and pick up my friends
and fly us to desired locations in comfort and style.
Who was your
first “hero” in life?:
dad. then Jim Henson and Shel Silverstein.
/>What is your favorite thing to do on your day off from work?:
draw pictures.
What is your favorite color?: i
like all the pretty colors.
Who (or what) do you love?:
unopened boxes of Uni-Ball Vision fine black tips. small town flea
markets. diners. mom. dad. brett. pony fang. Minor Threat. the fudge factory.
/>Who and/or what are some of your influences?: People
watching. Eavesdropping. Talking to strangers sometimes. I have some amazing
friends & family who i admire and pay attention to.  there’s some authors i
read. artists i watch. musics i listen to.

/>What other artists do you most admire?

ooo….
lots. Don Van Vliet, M Saayid, Spike Jones, George Saunders, Tom Waits, Dave
Eggers, Peter Saul, Prince Paul, Matt Groenig, Lynda Barry, Pushead, Dave
Cooper, Kaz, Tony Millionaire, Barry Mcgee, KozynDan, Rich Jacobs, Michael
Krueger, Kiel Johnson, Pal Wright, Kurt Vonnegut, Roald Dahl, too many to
list.

How would you describe your art to someone who
could not see it?

this question always comes up at
parties and i’m never any good at it. i babble something about the fudge factory
and come off looking like a perv every time. i think people take different
things from it. it’s cartoon. it’s funny sometimes. it’s depressing sometimes.
sometimes they kinda look like people you know.

/>What other talent would most like to have?

i’d
like to play the banjo well. and double dutch. i wanna be good at that
too.

What do you fear the most?

/>Getting in some horrible accident where both my hands get chopped off
at once and simultaneously gouge out my eyeballs and my ears go completely deaf
from the scream I shriek out, and my vocal chords are shredded from that scream
so i am mute as well. but the rest of my body is undamaged so i go on
living.

What is your greatest ambition?

/>To affect some degree of change with my art, big or small. Mostly just
to put out something worthwhile.
