Shit We're Diggin'... Toggle

"Toggle is a design/art experiement. Each issue is based on a theme that is picked at random and then explored by two artists. The artist develop work based on the theme separatly at first. They then create new work from the individual pieces. However, they do this together, piece by piece, back and forth, each one adding to the work from individual pieces until the artists decide it is finished. The idea of working together, back and forth is meant to inspire artistic growth and brings new ideas to the surface. That's the theory anyway.

Jason's Barcelona Diary
Yesterday we gave you a report on the the recent Barcelona street art meet-up by Microbo and bo130. Today's report on the festivities in Barcelona comes from our good friend Jason at Vapors Magazine... Check back tomorrow for another Barcelona report. This time from Dave the Chimp.

Day 1:
SFO to Barcelona via Delta. No free food for the domestic leg and some group of wannabe corporate tycoons on their way to a business conference in BCN chattin' it up the whole way. Quit trying to learn how to make more money 35,000 feet over the Atlantic!
We get to our apartment and rest. After a phone call to Freaklub we are at a gallery opening in which they have some work up. After the show it's tapas time!

Day 2:
It rained all day. We were scheduled to meet everybody at a bar called The Bodega in Raval. Danny and I decided to make up some paste and get up on the walk there. It was raining like mad but we still got around 60 posters up. Barcelona is an absolute free for all when it comes to putting your work up. When we got to the spot I was amazed with how many heads came down to Barcelona for the weekend. Just off the top of my head....Bo130, Microbo, Chaz(The London Police), Finders Keepers Crew (London), Gallo (Amsterdam), Freaklub (Barcelona), Flying Fortress (Germany), Nano (Spain) and many others were all in the place to be. This was an unofficial street art convention. The first of many explained to me by Chaz from The London Police. The rest of the evening consisted of beer and conspiring to crush the city for the rest of the weekend.

Day 3:
The rain has let up a little and we are all at a sorta legal wall. It is not really a legal wall but as Xavi from Freaklub explains, "On the weekends the police kind of give us a break." How much more of a break can the police give you?!
Anyways, all the artists kill the wall. Everybody kicks it on the scooters parked along the road and just soaks in the Barcelona "free for all" vibes.
We go back to the apartment for siesta and prepare for a late night at the club. We went to the club jump and it was all out ruckus from 2:00am till 6:00am. I have to give big, big respect to The Hooligans (PMH, Dave The Chimp, Dface, Ichi, Mysterious Al) for making the dance floor the only place to be. Seriously, if you want a party to go off invite The Hooligans, they are non stop party action.
The walk back to the apartment was sketch. Don?t get stupid faded at the club and then walk down La Rambla. You will straight get jacked. Too many shiesty emcees to count on La Rambla.

Day 4:
We wake up late, real late. Sunny and warm we decide to do some tourist type stuff and head up to Park Guell. The park sits on top of a hill that overlooks all of Barcelona. It was designed by Antonio Gaudi in 1914. That night we just chill and I take some pictures of some of the street art and graff that has been put up over the past few days.

Day 5:
About 10 of us meet at the Montana store to take a tour of the Montana factory an hour inland from Barcelona. The tour was amazing. The owner Jordi and founder Kopi are so passionate towards graffiti and producing a quality product for the art. Buy Montana!

Day 6:
Everybody is cutting out of BCN today. The weekend was truly memorable. So much art was put up in a city that genuinely appreciates and welcomes it. Barcelona is like no other place in the world and I can only hope that I find my way back there quickly.
20hrs of sitting in budget ass Delta coach back to S.F. I read most of The Da Vinci Code.
For the full report on Barcelona, be sure to check out the May/June Barcelona issue of Vapors Magazine The issue will include travel info, store maps, places to stay, interviews and more.

Five Tips From... dist

tip #1:
only attempt to paint, draw, whatever when your mind is fully at ease. If your thoughts are elsewhere you will never be happy with what you've done and in my experience this leads to dumping stuff which may actually be pretty good? If your hearts not in it then whats the point?
tip #2:
When out and about, never concentrate on the fact that passers by may be perplexed by your activities, its going to cause you mischief. Just ignore everything around you, because if your gonna get caught, your gonna get caught. People will sometimes suprise you though, and actually want to chat and discuss what your doing, this is a warm change and its nice to hear what strangers think.
tip #3:
Cleanliness is next to godliness, don't leave shit where your doing something, try and pretend it just appeared there or a least attempt to give that impression.
tip #4:
If a painting, image, idea is stressing you out, leave it be. Have a cuppa and an eccles cake, maybe a cigarette and come back at it. It can be torturous just to keep plugging away, building the Hulk rage. Its going to there tommorow?
tip #5:
Don't fear criticism. it can be good to hear if your on the wrong path, best thing is ask someone outside the life, someone real close, like your mum, or your girl/boy. See what they think, their answers or responses are going to be nothing but honest. Its the only way sometimes to see what your actually doing. Most of your friends will be too scared to say what they really think, which is sweet, but doesn't help sometimes.

Who and/or what are some of your influences?: Growing up punk in the 80's, Hollywood and political iconography and personal ads from trashy LA papers.
What other artists do you most admire?: Klutch
because he just does it, Jamie Reid because he made ransom notes into an art
form, and the hard working folks over at www.stencilrevolution.com for giving
enough advice and tips that anyone can pick a knife and get to work. How would you describe your art to someone who could not see it?: Weathered and slightly dirty

THE ESSENTIALS #29 - The Essentials of Washington D.C

The Essentials of Washington D.C by Kelly Towles
This city has quite a bit to offer, you just have to get around the conservative part of this city.
Graff
The Wall of Fame- 14th and D street NW. Best thing is to take the Metro (subway) to the Smithsonian stop. It is a bitch to find parking in a major tourist area. Now this spot is under the bridge by the water. Classic spot, but.... you need to try to get down there during the day. They just built a new office building next to the tracks, so you may get fucked with by cops- just tell them you're from out of town and you didn't know, but it is still illegal. Trains still roll through there and there are always the homeless elements. Either way, keep one eye open. You may still see some old Felon joints, Demon202 and some other names.
Supplies
As I know it, we don't have a graff store in town so here are the next best things. Homedepot- 901 Rhode Island Ave NE (202)526-8760 The Art Store- 3019 M street NW. (202)342-7030. They have Krylon- but not alot, they have a load of other useful things. AC Moore- Crossroads Center 5800 Crossroads Ctr Way Falls Church, VA (703)578-1401. You need a car for this one, but they have paint.
Food and booze
The Black Cat- 14th street NW, between S st and T st. Ust/Cardozo stop Classic indie/punkrocker bar. Stiff drinks, good
music, pool table, and they have a cafe that serves a wide selection of food (alot of vegetarian stuff). I go during the week, not so crowded.
The Big Hunt-1345 Connecticut Avenue NW. Dupont stop. drinks food and pool table. It can be a mixture of messengers and business type, but not bad.
Bens Chili Bowl- 1213 U St. NW U st stop. A classic food joint, great vegetarian chili. You may see some Black Panthers Chillin there- it has been a classic spot for them to meet.
Now if you party in Adams Morgan (too many bars to list-but a good place for a Thursday night- maybe Heaven and Hell bar or the Pharmacy) there is always a big slice at pizza mart for the quickie or sit down and sober up at El Tamarindo- down towards Florida ave. I would say cab it, the subway isn't to close if your drinkin.
For the eyes
Signal 66 - 926 N Street, REAR, NW in Blagden Alley. One of my favorites. Near the new convention center. A little sketchy, but worth an opening night. Giant warehouse spot.
Transformer Gallery - 1404 P Street NW, Dupont stop or Ust. Small, but usually has a good show. There is also a nice wall near there.
Moca DC - 1054 31st NW. Foggy bottom stop. Always supports graff artists.
enjoy your stay and come again, ohh please don't feed the politicians.

Give 'Em Props.... Fafi by Spazmat
"Is there ONE painting, sticker, stencil, sculpture, or piece of architecture that truly inspires you in your daily work?""Narrowing down a picture that inspires me every day is quite a challenge. As I looked around my place, and sorted through photos, I realized there was a photo of a Fafi piece from NY that was vivid in my memory, and I've held as a benchmark for my own art. When i first saw the Fafi piece over two years ago, I was not aware of Fafi at all. I took this photo because it was so beautiful. The painting was weathered and layered with other work, and the original craftsmanship shined through. much love to Fafi."... Spazmat

Where would you most like to live?: south of france not far from the spanish border. i love the people and the atmosphere down there. unfortunately my french is THAT bad...
Who was your first "hero" in life?: mhmm... difficult... "my father" would be too hippie (although it?s true! i touched his underarm-selfmade-tattoo with sheer reverance, and now they?re complaining why i?m that pierced and tattooed!!!)... i think it was... mhmmm... (hanging on this question now for about 5 minutes)... well... it was he-man. my grandmother once gave me a bunch of master-of-the-universe-action-puppets. seems to have impressed me more than i thought...
What is your favorite thing to do on your day off from work?: cooking, eating, my girlfriend, political stuff and of course drawing stickers (although i make most of them in school...)
What is your favorite color?: blue... no! yellow! uaaaaaaahhhh.... (in fact it?s green and black)
Who (or what) do you love?: the standart stuff (family, girlfriend, friends...), i see people and animals as unable to take full consequences of their own, so i try to love everone in the way you love a dog even when it bites
you. it?s just a dog...
Who and/or what are some of your influences?: i get most of my feedback from all the people around me like all my href= "http://www.ntsearch.com/search.php?q=friends&v=55">friends doing grafitti (i am the
only one just doing street art here...), my girlfriend with her classical art-education (you know, all these chromatics and perspectives and all this theorie i never couldn?t really cope with), my family and everyone else in school. so i get a lot of different opinions from a lot of different points of view and try to find the best way to integrate all these reactions into "my" style. if i had to name some more famous artist, they would be derek hess (for his outlines), edward hopper (for his amazing way of expressing a whole story by just showing two persons), PS (not famous writer around here. never met him but i admire his feeling for proportions) and many many more
i think mostly its boredom which inspires me...

What other artists do you most admire?
see above (damn... first reading all the questions and then answer...)
How would you describe your art to someone who could not see it?
"a graphic or plastic intervention in peoples moods and minds"
i think of my work not just as art (very arrogant thinking of hiw own crappy stuff as "art", isn?t it?!) but as kind of politics in bright colors
What other talent would most like to have?
to live what i pray?
to know what i want?
but mostly i think i just should know when to stop (for me it?s a talent to do so!)
What do you fear the most?
apathy
What is your greatest ambition?
to live in harmony with my standards and worths
cooking undefinable vegan stuff that all tastes the same! EVER!
