Wooster Arrives In London

Barely a few hours after touching down at Heathrow, we made our may to London's East End for some amazing curry on Brick Lane and then a night of heavy drinking at the Dragon Bar with some of London's finest. It was great to see PMH, Mysterious Al, Dface, Eve, Chimp, Ichi Bunny, Gomez, Aiko, Saru, Sunil and Jane, Mjar, Flying Fortress, Jake, Kabe.... (we know that we've forgotton a lot of names but between the pints of lager and the jet lag it's hard to remember much of last ngiht) Pics soon.... Here's a few pics we took yesterday in Shoreditch

Profile: Create

Create - The Vitals
Age: twenty years old
Hometown: Winnipeg, Canada
Where do you now live?: Winnipeg
How long have you been creating street art?: i've been bombing since 2001, but started more of a "street art" focus about a year, year and a half ago.
What did you do last night?: schoolwork, put up some sticks and posts, painted a little bit.
What is your favorite thing to eat for dinner?: i do enjoy a good pizza from time to time.
Who is your favorite fictional character?: american democracy. oh wait, that's a fictional concept. um, probably batman. so badass.
What do you currently have in your pockets?: organizer, stickers, marker, keys, bus pass.
If you were given "more time," what would you do with it?: make more art!
Who do you love?: painting and my lady.

Create - The A's to Our Q's:
Wooster: How did you get started in creating art for the street?
Create: I live in Winnipeg. Period. If you want to know exactly how many different shades of grey there are, Winnipeg would be a good place to find out. The streets here are so boring, and there's little to look at. I wanted to do something that would break up the monotony of walking around this place.
Wooster: How would you describe your style?:
Create: bold and bright. sexy and violent. slightly sinister....
Wooster: Why sticks?
Create: I have a bit of an obsessive personality, and I like being able to take the time to perfect the post or sticker before going out. Also, visually, it allows you more room to express certain things. Not to mention it takes about two seconds to put up!
Wooster: What other street artists do you most admire and why?
Create: It's tough to make a list that doesn't go on too long. I like sumo, alexone, abstract, tt crew, daub, maciek, crucho, shepard fairey, twist, futura, nyebye, your, ufo - the list is endless. I admire anyone who works hard at their art and tries to keep pushing forward.
Wooster: What's your favorite city, neighborhood, or block, to post and/or to see street art?
Create: In Winnipeg, it has to be the exchange district, so much fresh stuff right now. I'm going to France and Spain in the summer, and I'm really stoked to check the scenes in those countries. I've seen a lot of photos on the internet, and it looks pretty dope.
Wooster: What inspires you now?
Create: I must admit, the city that I hate is also one of my largest inspirations. The cult of celebrity, the darker side of things. My girlfriend, of course.
Wooster: What are you currently working on? Can you give us a sneak peek?
Create: I'm thinking about doing some pieces in a classical narrative style like Reubens or Raphael, but with flat, bright colours and highly detailed stencils for definition. Lots of symbolism.

Checkin' In With 108

It's been a while since we last heard from 108 in Alessandria, Italy. So we thought we'd check in and see how he was doing:
So what have you been doing for the last few months? Any new projects?
Yeah... I was very busy with some projects. Beside 108... I've some "audio" projects, I did some grafics, CD cover artworks for black metal band and for a post rock band. I don't have any true job, and I don't have money. I'm doing some comics and some canvas..... YES, I'm still doing my things averywhere, I did some little changes to my shapes, they are growing and changing... Some times I try to do somethings totally different but I'm not really satisfied. I had some little problems with police too. It stop me for a few. In the end I like to do everything... but I don't like to do anything for money, and it's big a problem.
What's coming up for you in 2004?
Hehehe... I don't know. I'll try to finish university (designing a museum for the old Tram* system of my town), I have too many projects.... I hope to do a webzine about "street art" and more... I HOPE TO LIVE AS AN ARTIST!!! (but I have no hope).
What are the things that have been inspiring you lately?
This winter inspired me a lot. I like snow and the fog... I have a true "cult" for trees in winter. I did a lot of pics. After it, mmm.... in the last times I watched some new movies, some old movies (the best ones: Noi Albinoi, Nosferatu....), and I falled again in to Art Nouveau, expecially the "Secessionism of Wien" (it's right???), sometimes it happens.
*maybe in usa tram is called trolley, I think? .
I send you 2 108 pics... a preview of a comic that I'm drawing (at top), and a LadyBug pic, that I like... I hope you enjoy them! (scuse me again for my bad english...) thanx again for your support and keep in touch! bye, 108:::

Tristan Manco's Street Logos Is A Great Book

If we had to choose only one art book to buy this year, our pick would be Tristan Manco's latest work for Thames and Hudson, Street Logos. We're absolutely blown away by how good it is. There are a lot of really good books out there on street art, but Tristan's book is the first really great one. With Street Logos, Tristan has evolved his thoughts on street art first developed in Stencil Graffiti. He presents a series of artists in five separate sections - Signs, Iconographics, Logos, Urban Characters, and Free-Forms. As he describes it in the intro:
The best thing about Street Logos is that Tristan has once again managed to discover a whole group of new artists. At the same time the book showcases some amazing work by many artists who you may already know. "Current graffiti art is more reflective of the world around it. Using new materials and techniques, its innovators are creating an original language of forms and images infused with contemporary graphic design and illustration. Fluent in branding and graphic imagery, they have been replacing tags with more personal logos and shifting from typographic to iconographic forms of communication. Subverted signs, spontaneous drawings, powerful symbols and curious characters represent an unstoppable worldwide outdoor gallery of free art."
The best thing about Street Logos is that once again Tristan has managed to discover a whole group of new artists.
What artists are in the book?
Naw, that would be no fun if we were to tell you. Get a copy when you can and find out.
Street Logos is a book we can't stop talking about it.

CUM Lauches Their Website
Congratulations to our friends CUM in Ghent, Belgium who recently launched their website of street actions. What amazes us the most about CUM is that they're able to get these massive porn paste-ups into the center of urban cities. We can only imagine people's reactions when they first come upon them. Check out their website at www.cuminthestreets.com but be prepared, it may not be suitable for everyone, and if you're at work... be careful.

Call For Entries: God Bless Graffiti Coalition at MASS MOCA

"And Graffiti commanded man to paint all walls with bright and lively colors, do not fall prey to the evil of the buff, of dripping brown paint and sandblasted emptiness" Krylon 2:16-17
"Wherefore, as by one buff sin entered the world, and so buffing passedamong all walls." Painter's Touch 5:12
Call for Participation: We Want Your Street Art Deadline: April 15, 2004
The God Bless Graffiti Coalition (GBGC), a national graffiti advocacy group (see below description), is looking for artists around the world who use posters, stencils, stickers, sign installations, and anything else that sticks to walls to send us their work for an exhibition project entitled "On the 8th Day..." wall.
This project is part of a larger political art exhibition opening this coming May 2004 at Mass MOCA (the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art), one of the leading museums for contemporary art in North America. The show, called "The Interventionists," is a collection of work by artists who "intervene" in public space. Mass MOCA sees over 110,000 people come through its doors in the course of a year! "The Interventionists" will be on display for 10 months. The "On the 8th Day..." project will be installed on a 69' x 20' wall which is located in the opening room for the entire "The Interventionists" exhibition.
This is an open call and we are asking for MULTIPLE copies of poster, stencil, sticker and sign work (as well as actual cut stencils) of any size (we would love to receive large works). The GBGC will be using all this material to construct and compose a giant wall of street art, with the work pasted, stuck and painted directly on the wall. NOTE: Because we will be piling the work of hundreds of artists onto the wall, some work will only be partially visible on the final product (just like in the street). The work doesn't have content limitations, political and non-political street art are equally welcome.
Include the name you use for your art in with your work. If you are sending work for multiple people or your crew, tell us what is what. If you want us to confirm that we receive your work, or if you want to hear how the show goes, then include contact info in your package, either an email or a physical address. If you have any questions please let us know at graffiti@counterproductiveindustries.com and we will try to help. We look forward to hearing from you!
