"Best of 2003" Part III

Today's "Best Of's" come from a terrific group of people including Blek Le Rat, Eko, Prism, Jason from Vapors Magazine, Chun 1, PMH.

Favorite Event of 2003:

Blek Le Rat: On the first of january 2003 at about 7 o'clock in the morning, I and Jurgen Grosse from urban-art info in Berlin, stuck a big poster on the mythical place called "Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin." Sybille and Alexandre, were also there. It was kind of surealistic. We were not more than 5 people, protesting against the war. The poster stayed in the place for about two months. One morning it then disappeared ..

Eko: (from Ekosystem.org)The birth of my son Merlin.

Chun1: WOM + SCA crews jointly exhibition (in japan.. saw the pics in a japanese magazine.. stoked!!!)

Prism: (from Strencilrevolution.com) Empty Show 2, Camberwell (http://www.sattastudio.com/_temp/stncl/media/empty_show2/empty_show2 .html)

Jason (from Vapors Magazine): Splash Festival (Chemnitz, Germany) Friendly Fire Tour (Germany), Stereo Skateboards Artshow (S.F.), Agenda Trade Show (San Diego)

PMH: The First Finders Keepers event. The best summer street party ever, and i was one of those responsible. It, to me, marked the beginning of summer, the beginning of finders keepers, my first art show, my new direction in my new style, made new friends and basically was so off the hook it hurt. aside from that, i guess seeing legenday band 'radio birdman' live was cool, even though it looked liked a band of jimmy saville lookalikes, but cool never the less...

Favorite Artist of 2003:

Blek Le Rat: Charles Edward from CUE, L'Atlas from Paris France, She one, Adam Neate ,SO6 from France, Banksy.

Eko: Wim Delvoye and his machine to make real shit

Chun1: With One, Kid Acne, Totem2, Sawasdeeeee

Prism: SYNC and Reka One

Jason: Man, I'm gonna have to go with Seen. He's a classic and a person that will make the art history books. This year he diversified a bit and really flipped his style while staying true to his roots. The fact that he is able to adapt to current trends without losing an ounce or respect or stray away from the essence of his style keeps me his biggest fan.

PMH: if there is one artist who sums up 2003 to me.....who has constantly been killing it in a new and unique way, and that epitomises 2003 for me....well i think its.....well i dont think there is one to be honest. there were some highlights but nobody that jumps out to me now. george bush or tony blair for being con artists??? actually come to mention it ive been knocked out by swoon this year - big up swoon!!!!!!

Favorite New Artist of 2003 (an artist who you did not know of last year):

Blek Le Rat: CUE, L' Atlas

Chun1: Esow

Prism: Medium

Jason: Freaklub. I love dem' freaks. Big shouts to Wooster and Eko for turning me on to them. I'm not gonna front, the internet sites turn me on to nuff artists.

PMH: probably David Choe. truly one of those people who makes you think about throwing in the towel because you think youll never be at that standard, but then you turn round and it boosts you and raises your game 10 notches higher than you thought possible. did i mention his arts super dope? well it is. Check out his books, cursiv and bruised fruit. Bruised fruit is better, but cursiv is still 100% times better than most shit out on art book shop shelves.

Favorite Piece of Art of 2003:

Blek Le Rat: Charles Edward from CUE (law of the jungle) and SO6 (his work about the derelicks from paris)

Eko: This piece from Le cover crew from Italy was one of my favourites.

Chun1: Sever-Totem-Esteme.. fucking nice! respect!

Prism: That's just way too hard. Here's a photo of my latest stencil instead!

Jason: Our issue 19 cover by Freaklub.

PMH: There is not one piece individually that i can choose, because there's so many. could be chimps output at the first finders keepers, whoever goes round doing stencils under the name 'SHANKSY' (the make of a british toilet), i thought some of the regular suspects output was awesome - kaws, hecox, kevin lyons..., whoever did the outkast sleeve with the photoshop picture of andre 3000 as a studly horse, some new peter blake joints...sorry too many to even start listing

Favorite New Product of 2003:

Eko: There were 2 kind of people in 2003, people wearing Flying Fortress T-shirt and the others.

Chun1: Pocky Banana Choco! yeah!! For Monkeys!!!

Prism: Shit in a can

Jason: Oh, the Nokia sidekick. I get my email and peep the wooster site wherever I am including international.
I also bought a used Nikon D1 and somehow ended up with a Yashica T4.

PMH: my spanking new arkitip DCs by evan hecox...black and pink is my colourway, added with one of my fav artists, well its a sureshot formula that hits bullseye with a capital B. runners up - amercian forces iraqi wanted playing cards, my sisters new g4 laptop (ive been computerless for too long), salt and vinegar snack a jacks crisps....oh and some arkitip free gifts - phil frost ball, ssur drinks mats

Favorite Toy of 2003:

Blek Le Rat: my PowerBook mac G4

Eko: Just like the last 4 years, my digital camera.

Chun1: i only play with my ol' dirty BMX =P

Prism: Living Dead Dolls!

Jason: Hot Toys SDU Hong Kong

PMH: my 400% KAWS chompers. kaws is another great, but i wasnt feeling the rabbit one or the michalin man, but this came along it hit my switches. my style is influenced by Heinz Edelmann who did the yellow submarine art. I had a cache of old pyschadelic kids books from when i was a kid and they are a big influence on me now, and this toy is clearly on the same wavelength as me and i love it. its like if michael barrymore had a toy that goes with his thoughts itll probably be a pair of water wings, so things dont go down in swimming pools...

Favorite CD of 2003:

Blek Le Rat: NTM , Mafia trece, i am

Eko: I haven't been impressed by many records this year. Most of my favorite records were mixes and compilations. Nevertheless Dizzee Rascal ( Boy In Da Corner ) sounded pretty new.

Chun1: Snoop Doggy Dog "Doggystyle" (sorry i was captured in the '93.. )

Prism: Lars Frederiksen & The Bastards

Jason: Dizzee Rascal and the Rapture

PMH: favourite cd??? probably an old cd that gets rinsed...manu chao 'clandestino' as i dont have many that dont skip regularly and that pisses me off....i am a vinyl man and ive been rocking the new outkast joint (its like the harry potter books - everyone in the free world rocks it), new dirtbombs LP, new black moon LP, kitsune love, the darkness LP....

Favorite Website of 2003

Blek Le Rat: I don't want to lie so wooster on first and definitively google

Eko: http://www.suprnova.org/

Chun1: www.mistercartoon.com

Prism: stencilrevolution.com!

Jason: margretcho.net/blog Her blogs are insane. catchdubs.com too.

PMH: www.popbitch.com for the message board. beware no holds barred!

What do you most want for Christmas?

Blek Le Rat: Maybe the new power mac G5

Eko: A not too boring familly diner.

Chun1: finished the bloody midterm exam and go chillin' with my lil' Momo

Prism: I don't celebrate Christmas.

Jason: A Nikon D type 24mm lens

PMH: a winning lottery ticket or a nintendo power glove

What is your New Year's wish?

Blek Le Rat: as Tristan said? peas on earth?

Eko: Fuck 2003 !! It was so dark, we can only hope it will be a bit better (more peace, more love, more art), but i must admit i'm not very optimistic...

Chun1: peace, love and bombing!!!

Prism: Paint more. Party hard. Health and happiness.

Jason: I wish that our fucking magazine breaks even next year

PMH: may 2004 be bigger and better that 2003 !!!! and my my plans go better than...er..planned!

How will you be spending the Holiday's this year? / What will you be doing for New Years Eve?

Blek Le Rat: I don't know yet, i usually decide always at the last moment what I am going to do .

Chun1: Preparing for the exam.. damn i hate it. and my comrade With is coming back to Bangkok, we gonna paint some more then, yeah, surely show u guys the pic later!

Prism: My holidays will be spent relaxing, travelling and painting. On New Years no doubt I will be drinking and smoking too much, no matter where I am.

Jason: My daughter is having a New Years party with her friends and we are the "help." Other than that I am going to be relaxing with family and plotting for the 2004 takeover.

PMH: well i;m at a pikey work that only gives us bare minimum time off so ill be at work most days...but hopefully it'll be a haze of booze, mistletoe, mulled wine, scarfs and lots of food. new years ill be in bristol with my girlfriends family, slowly getting fuckered. sweet jesus, lets get rowdy....

Most people carve their designs

Most people carve their designs into stone. Not B-MOC. He carves his stuff into human and animal skulls. Crazy shit. But we love it. There's something really beautiful about these photos. Or is it just us?

Favorite Event of 2003:

Shepard Fairey: "The Backjumps show in Berlin had an amazing group of people and that city has a lot of great street art. It was even more bombed than N.Y."

Gail (from BeingHunted.com): Tokion's "Creativity Now" conference, Malevich: Suprematism exhibit at the Guggenheim, Nike Laser launch party @ Chelsea Art Museum

Maya Hayuk: The blackout in NYC this past summer. it was total, fun-loving vigilantism.

Dom (from Stickernation) My journey to New York and hooking up with the Wooster Collective, Rep1, The Flower Guy and Swoon. The whole week was incredible as it was my first time in the city. So much to see and do. Also the Art of Rebellion book launch was another highlight.

Logan Hicks: Streetwise two in Berlin, what's your 20? art show in San Diego, and Scribble and Scripture show at Roberts +Tilton gallery

Chimp: Art Of Rebellion book launch in Munich, Germany (and getting to paint with Flying Fortress, Mr Krooks and D*Face). All the Finders Keepers Street Galleries. My 30th Birthday Party (thanks to Ichi Bunny for the dopest Japanese food, and Toby for the legal highs - "this shit is legal!?!?") And painting gay rainbows for a show with Bwana Spoons, Shaun Wolfe, and Arbito, at Compound Gallery in Portland, Oregon (it's on now!!). filled my life with smiles!!!

Gail: Matthew Barney

Chimp: Ichi Bunny (and her comic "Bunny Jump") and PMH

Favorite New Artist of 2003 (an artist who you did not know of last year):

Tristan: Steff Carricondo (new to me) In fact all the artists from the 9th Concept in Paris

Favourite stencil artist of 2003 is probably Tom Civil and all at Canada Lane, Melbourne - see - http://www.stencilrevolution.com/
Dom: It has to be Swoon. It's been a long time that a piece of work has stopped me dead in my tracks. When I first clocked a Swoon piece in NYC - I was stunned! She also took me to a great noodle bar off Canal Street so top marks!

Logan: London Police. Not new to the art world, but new to me. Saw their stuff in Berlin this year and loved it.

Chimp: Flying Fortress, Ron English and Adam Neate

Favorite Piece of Art of 2003:

Shepard: I think the huge maybe 15 foot tile piece Space Invader did on Melrose is the coolest street art piece.

Gail: Ryan McGinness's mirror installation at Deitch

Maya: 'i'm alive' by Shawn Wolfe from the Rainbow Powers Cubed show at Compound Gallery in Portland, Oregon. i'd love to see this symbol replace a crucifix

Tristan: I want to tell the world but am keeping it exclusive to "Street Logos" - hold tight

Dom: The title of the piece is called 'Bling Bling medallion' by Frank Tjepkema. From a distance the piece of jewellery resembles a ornate golden cross. On close inspection it is made up of hundreds of brand logos. It is the most branded object in the world. Fantastic! Seen in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.

Logan: Too many to name.

Chimp: Ichi Bunny's contribution to the Element skateboards show

Favorite New Product of 2003:

Tristan: New apple imac

Logan: Fling the Monkey from Rickey/Evil Monito crew

Chimp: Still my skateboard...

Favorite CD of 2003:

Shepard: Interpol is carrying over from 2002. The Darkness is ROCKIN'.

Gail: 7 Hurtz, Electroleum (Output Recordings)

Maya: TV on the Radio "Young Liars" EP on Touch and Go.

Dom: J-Rocc - Syndromes Remix

Tristan: Tommy Guerrero

Logan: Moving Units. My favorite rediscovered CD in 2003 - Gang Starr, Daily Operation

Favorite Website of 2003

Tristan: Ekosystem.org

Dom: Statistically I went here the most this year... http://cube.ign.com

Logan: stencilrevolution.com, freshnessmag.com, evilmonito.com

Chimp: Google - I can't be fucked with sitting in front of the mac all day, and Google helps me find what I need

What do you most want for Christmas?

Shepard: A beat counter to help me match up my records quicker.

Gail: fun gift certificates

Maya: a shopping spree at Amoeba Records in SF.

Gail: health, happiness, and to build a successful business

Maya: That Bush is ousted from office and replaced by Nader. more realistically, that Howard Dean becomes President....or ANYONE but Mr. Bush.

Tristan: To travel more and paint more

Dom: To have a great 2004. I see next year as quite an important one for tak! design... bring it on!

Logan: To travel more. Would love to have a show anywhere in Australia, anywhere in Europe, Singapore or Tokyo. Cant afford a proper vacation, so I try to justify it by traveling and working at the same time.

Chimp: That "Skull Crew" would return to London and paint over some more of the shitty graf kack-handed fashion wankers keep putting up - they seem to have made people raise their game and make more of an effort. kids, if you're gonna paint in the streets, please make some effort - ugly graf makes the rest of the world hate us, when all we want to do is spread some love. That bill poster dudes wouldn't cover my paintings. That everyone who reads this comes to ISPO in Munich at the beginning of February 2004 and parties with me, Flying Fortress, Gomes, and the Hessenmob crew... let's fucking party yo!!! That my status as "Official Fake German" gets upgraded to "German Love God"... or can Kabe be the only one...?

How will you be spending the Holiday's this year? / What will you be doing for New Years Eve?

Shepard: Seeing the folks and the in-laws and bombing in S.C. and D.C. New Year's Eve we are having a few friends over and hopefully I'll be spinning records trying out my beat counter. Life without the beat counter would be fine too...I have everything I need.

Gail: Holidays with my family in NH. New Year's Eve roaming NYC

Maya: At Lake Sleepytown, which is the name for the weeklong sleeping-eating-drinking- more sleeping event that goes on in my house in SF. we pull all of the mattresses into the living room and proceed to have the best slumber party in the history of slumber parties. New Years in NYC, most likely drinking too much and hopping parties.

Tristan: Checking out New York, Boston and Montreal - sledding in the snow

Dom: I'm going back to my folks for Xmas for a week. It's been a while since I've been back home so I'm looking forward to it: Seeing my family, eating nice food, watching films on TV, drinking. New Year will be spent in Amsterdam partying hard.

Logan: I will visiting the Wooster Collective on my 2 week east coast trip!!! Spending New years Eve in my home town, Baltimore!

"Best of 2003" Part I

As we enter the final weeks of the year, we asked a group of our friends to let us know their "Favorites of 2003" Today's entries come from Chad at Kid Robot, Craig Metzger, Calma, Kid Acne, and Mysterious Al. Check back each day for more....

Favorite Event of 2003:

Chad (Kid Robot): Black Out vs. Clash of the Titans... ummm black out, b/c it shows how great a city NYC is once again!

Craig Metzger "My wedding and Honeymoon. Going to Austin for the FriendMakers show and meeting 2 dudes with whom I've only known through email and regular mail. We had such a blast!!!

Calma: "Well probably it is the show I participated along with Asa, Cruz, SHN, Vicio, Temp and Radioatividade. The event was a mix of social action and art show and it took place in a giant squat; not a squat for punks or whathever, but homeless and families that have been kicked out from a favela or were living on the street. It was two 17th floor buildings (no water service, illegal light connection and no elevator. We painted the "barracos" (wooden small divisions built inside the corridors and were before tath were offices ) while the Temp/Radioatividade DJs were putting music and playing with the children. Fun!

Mysterious Al: "Wow- 2003 saw the birth and rise to fame of the Finders Keepers shows- So I'd say those collectively took my top spot for shows of the year- The first and second shows particularly were filled with totally inspired artwork by some amazing artists - It was awesome to see everything work out and I'd like to publicly thank all the artists who made it happen again. It was awesome. This was also the year I hooked up with my crew (The mighty FKC) - and I have really good feelings about what's to come. 2003 has been a good year. I drank a lot this year.

Kid Acne: 1. Kid Acne Live at Leeds Hi-Fi Club when we killed it proper good. 2. The weekend in Paris with Anne and Akroe. 3. Kid Acne's 25th birthday party with all the legends of the city in one place!

Favorite Artist of 2003:

Chad: Lern/GH

Craig: (I can't pick one and the list is way bigger): Kara Walker, Evan Hecox, Chris Johanson, Raymond Pettibon, Swoon, Dan Witz

Calma: Asa

Mysterious Al: "Fuck- I have had the most unbelievable year, making friends with lots of totally amazing artists from all over the world. It's so fucking difficult to put anybody up over anybody else- In fact it's impossible- But, right at this moment, I'm back into my old comic book ways and am fully rating Jamie Hewitt as my favorite artist of 2003- The stuff he had at 'Santa's Ghetto' is nothing compared to what he's capable of, and it was nice to see him back in the public light after his 'Tank Girl' and 'Gorillaz' projects. I managed to drink a pint in four seconds flat tonight. The kids were so proud..."

Kid Acne: Miss Van

Favorite New Artist of 2003 (an artist who you did not know of last year):

Chad: Flying Fortress

Craig: I was playing with hand cut paper and some one mentioned her to me. The very next day I saw a PBS special about Kara Walker and ever since it has really inspired me to do more with the hand cut paper.

Calma: Cruz

Mysterious Al: My god- are you guys deliberately making this hard for me? Typing is difficult enough as tonight I managed to partially snap my collarbone again whilst breakdancing. I heard it make this dull snap, followed by the sound of tearing canvas- which I reckon was not good. Anyway- This year- in fact, in the last few months I discovered Fawn Gehweiler, a dope illustrator who's responsible for http://www.nocandy.org Her work is beautiful and dark at the same time. I can relate to the strange sort of sub-story level shit you see in her work. Chalk me up as another fan.

Kid Acne: Flying Fortress

Favorite Piece of Art of 2003:

Criag: Dan Witz and his photos of the humming birds from his early street projects (I bought two 16x20 prints)

Mysterious Al: Is it too pretentious to include a piece I did as my favorite? Only I was so pleased with my show at DEAL REAL RECORDS: I nearly killed myself whilst doing it- and I got SO fucked around by Deal Real - But with the help of my homeboy Jeff Metal we pulled through - and I honestly think it's the best looking shop in Soho. If this all seems too big headed then fair enough. My *other* favorite piece of art from 2003 has to be the motion picture 'Spirited Away' by Hayao Miyakazi. I know it was released in 2001, but I only got into Studio Ghibli this year and it is, without doubt the best animated movie of all time. You have never seen anything about character study and attention to neo-twisted detail until you see this movie. I got a copy on Amazon imported from Canada, and let me tell you- It's the best ?15 I've spent since I persuaded the barman at my local to put a shot of everything in a pint glass.

Kid Acne: UFO from France taking one of my illustrations and making it into a big stencil! this was a drawing i did for the TTC album sleeve last year.

Favorite New Product of 2003:

Chad: I hate the 3g Ipods, does that count?. For real though those Marc Newson cell phones for Japan only.

Calma: Clayton Brothers book

Craig: iPod

Mysterious Al: My Ipod (R.I.P.) Our time together was cruelly cut short. I stacked it on my BMX. I hurt. You died. Not a day goes by when I don't miss your drunken DJ. Remember when I'd get 'in tune' with you on the late bus home? You always knew what to play. I sill have your headphones. Oh, How I wish you were still fine, Just to hear you again, I wouldn't mind, The time you took to find...

Kid Acne: East Skateboards

Favorite Toy of 2003:

Chad: brothersrobber Toycon edition!

Craig: The pink Kaws Accomplice toy (so funny how it mocks the whole tough guy collector toys)

Calma: My digital camera

Mysterious Al: 2003 pissed me off just as much as all the other years with shit 'collectable' over-priced toys. Who is buying these things? Please stop. You're just encouraging more of the horrible kubric / bearbric / whatever lego-rip-off crap. My shoulder hurts.

Kid Acne: James Jarvis' rock and rolls toys.

Favorite CD of 2003:

Chad: Right now it is the DIPLO CD for TTL (not hollertronix one though) OR the promo mix by J-rocc for the jay-lib album... or the STARK REALITY re ish

Craig: The Joggers (Solid Guild) and Interpol

Calma: AFI - Sing the Sorrow

Mysterious Al: Oh my god- Now you're just being silly! This year I've been mostly listening to: (ahem) Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Deftones, DJ Shadow, Earthling, DR Octagon, FORSS, Fortet, Gus Gus, Incubus, MF Doom, Victor Vaughn, Mike Ladd, Mogwia, Scientist, Slint, Smashing Pumpkins, Underworld, Wagon Christ. I totally recommend checking ALL their back-catelogue on MP3. Don't steal music.

Kid Acne: Victor Vaughn

Favorite Website of 2003

Chad: Beinghunted.com & Kidrobot of course!

Craig: FecalFace.com and MarketEast.com

Calma: Skullzpress

Mysterious Al: Wooster has taken over the world this year. Through this site alone I've had the chance to hook up and work with so many 'proper' artists. I love that. It's been long overdue to get a website that brings everyone together as much as this one. Aside Wooster- The second best site on the internet is www.explodingdog.com - Sam doesn't need the link as he probably gets SO MUCH traffic I doubt he even notices anymore - But I still urge you to check his beautiful artwork and conceptual website...

Kid Acne: Suicide Girls

What do you most want for Christmas?

Chad: For my loved ones to be happy and healthy!

Craig: Stricter laws on hand guns and for myself: my own art gallery

Calma: Markers. All of them. Its hard to find good ones here. And paint.

Mysterious Al: Peace, Love, Stability, Happiness, Scalextric.

Kid Acne: Baron Munchausen on DVD

What is your New Year's wish?:

Chad: stopped doing this long ago

Craig: Bush is given the boot

Calma: Be less confused to use my time better.

Mysterious Al: If I told you, it wouldn't come true.... ;)

Kid Acne: To marry the girl from the copy shop.

How will you be spending the Holiday's this year? / What will you be doing for New Years Eve?:

Chad: In HK & Tokyo!!!! SHOPPING FOR SNEAKERS AND RECORDS. WOO_HOO!, I will be sleeping on New Years Eve.

Craig: Doing the family marathon which entails 4-6 days of non-stop visits to various relatives. As far as New Years go, I'm building a rocket and flying it to the moon.

Calma: I'll go to Sao Paulo's seaside and spend the New Years Eve at UBATUBA, at my friend Vinganca's house with other friends and girl, after take a plane to Bahia were I'll have a show with artist ASA in Trancoso. If anyone is around Trancoso or Porto Seguro in January just email me to know were is the venue.

Mysterious Al: I'm spending the holidays with my girl in my newly rented place in East London. We're gonna try and cook a Christmas meal and watch some crap X-mas telly. I hope Short Circuit 2 is on. It gets me every time. (sniff). I'd like to wish everyone I've met, and everyone I haven't had the chance to my kindest regards over the Christmas period - All the best, and I look forward to hooking up with you in 2004! Peace on Earth

Kid Acne: Going back to The Woof for Crimbo to see the rello's and Woof Stallions.
down The Unicorn on Christmas day and New Year in Madrid with the crew. Don't knock the hustle.

Sighn's Report on The Heildelberg Project

"We were driving around in some pretty intense neighborhoods. I mean just really rough. And since the city isn't cleaning up the abandoned buildings, they aren't cleaning up the graffiti either. We started seeing these different colored dots on houses here and there, and then came across the motherload. Our jaws just dropped. It's called The Heildelberg Project by Tyree Guyton. It was one of the most bizarre things I have ever seen. While these pictures show a little bit of it, it is definitely something to be experienced. Absolutely incredible inspiration for us all. peace, sighn

Profile: Brownsugaa

Brownsugaaa - The Vitals:

Age: 20
Hometown: Manila
Where do you now live?: Long Beach SoCal
How long have you been creating street art?: close to two months--but I've been into art before I can eat rice with my hands
What did you do last night?: flew back from Seattle
What is your favorite thing to eat for dinner?: Asian white rice with whatever Filipino food available
Who is your favorite fictional character?: Marvin the Martian
What do you currently have in your pockets?: lint, a dime, a ring
If you were given "more time," what would you do with it?: do a little dance, make a little love, GET DOWN TONIGHT!
Who do you love?: my boyfriend, my family, friends, and my pooch Cookie

Brownsugaaa - The A's to Our Q's:

Wooster: How did you get started in creating art for the street?

Brownsugaaa: It actually started when my boyfriend left for Seattle and I ended up having more "free time" in my hands. I've had issues when I would go for months creating pieces and then occasions when I would stop and not even THINK of picking up a pencil. Anyway, close to two months ago I decided to pick up on art again after a year and a half of being MIA but decided to try something different after I ran into the Stencil Revolution website.

Wooster: What other street artists do you most admire and why?

Brownsugaaa: I just recently started but I find a lot of the artists on Stencil Revolution very good.

Wooster: What's your favorite city, neighborhood, or block, to post and/or to see street art?

Brownsugaaa: Venice Beach, around Long Beach--downtown/by the LA river/by the trains, downtown Los Angeles, around Seattle.

Wooster: What inspires you now?

Brownsugaaa: That ceaseless tickin in my head.

Wooster: What are you currently working on? Can you give us a sneak peek?

Brownsugaaa: I'm currently trying to think up of ideas for the next Vinyl Killers show. I'm actually thinking of coming up with a 4 maybe 6 panel piece with a stencil artist from New York. I can't really give you a sneak peak unless you can read my mind BUT you can go to the SR website to view my lil gallery. I just realized I mentioned SR 4 times--including just now--maybe I should get a commendation? LOL

Our friend Laps needs your help. Here's the email:

"Check the pic above. Does anyone know what magazine it is? A friend took a cell phone pic of the cover and emailed it to me saying theres a great spread on street art - including some of my stuff - i just don't know what magazine that is to scoop it up."

Anyone know the answer? If you do, let us know at woostercollective@hotmail.com

UPDATE: We received a ton of emails today, letting us know that the magazine is a German mag called STYLEFILE. Thanks to everyone who emailed us. It sounds like an amazing mag!

Profile: Klutch

Klutch - The Vitals:

Age: 42. Still climbing, still shining.
Hometown: None really, we moved a lot. I was born in Oklahoma so I guess I gotta claim Okie.
Where do you now live?: Portland, Oregon, USA
How long have you been creating street art?: Off and on since 1982. Pretty active during the 80's then I went on a long hiatus to pretend to be a civilian. I just sort of started back in June of this year.
What did you do last night?: Read some of my friends book, The Best of Intentions: The Avow Anthology. Revealing some of his personal stories took courage and makes my feel like I know him a whole lot better. Great personal triumphs and tragedies told as only punk zine kids can.
What is your favorite thing to eat for dinner?: Almost anything I cooked myself. Last night it was falafel's and garlic drenched garbanzo beans.
Who is your favorite fictional character?: Easily this is Travis Bickle. I've watched Taxi Driver well over a hundred times and am totally obsessed with him. I am god's lonely man.
What do you currently have in your pockets?: My usual, an empty wallet with just my driver's license and library card.
If you were given "more time," what would you do with it?: I have always tried to focus on the present and not think too much about time, especially the future. A few years ago I left a very secure and lucrative career to have the time to spend my days as I wish. Art and traveling are what I enjoy most and I do plenty of both so I am good.
Who do you love?: My wife Sandy and our kitty Shasta.

Klutch - The A's to Our Q's:

Wooster: How did you get started in creating art for the street?

Klutch: Without really thinking about why I used to paint a cassette tape and crossbones back in 1982. Then I caught Style Wars on PBS and realized that there was something bigger going on. I painted mostly skate ditches and pools and I really got into cholo (Latino gang) hand styles. In 1985 I caught a show called Urban Abstraction that continues to be a huge influence to this day.

Wooster: Why "Klutch"?

Klutch: It's from a Disney movie Superdad. Klutch was a weirdo artist that was scamming on Superdad's daughter. My friends started calling me Klutch and the name just stuck.

Wooster: What other street artists do you most admire and why?

Klutch: Numero Uno is Magmo The Destroyer. Awesome work and a super cool person. His 5 Tips right here on Wooster are true words of wisdom and something I try to think about everyday. The whole mob over at Stencilrevolution. A dope little community that is really advancing stenciling by sharing advice, critique, technical tips, and support. It is an amazing thing that a good portion the stencil heads around the world know and are connected to each other.

Wooster: What's your favorite city, neighborhood, or block, to post and/or to see street art?

Klutch: San Francisco changed the way I think about street art and though it doesn't seem to be what it was in the 90's it will always be special to me. Most of my wife and my first dates were spent roaming the alleys and train yards of SF, Oakland, and Berkeley. Really though it's anywhere someone is doing something cool.

Wooster: What inspires you now?

Klutch: People everywhere who are living their asses off like today is the last day ever. Everyone who is burning with a desire for creation, connection, and doing something right now. You are an inspiration.

Wooster: What are you currently working on? Can you give us a sneak peek?

Klutch: Still wrapping up the Vinyl Killers show that I just put on (with a WHOLE lot of help from my friends) and beginning to plan for Vinyl Killers 2 for April 2004, again at Zeitgeist Gallery in Portland,OR. The whole painting on vinyl thing keeps blowing up and is sort of becoming a sub genre within stenciling. The show was a huge success on every level and tons of fun to be involved with. Contact me or watch Stencilrevolution.com if you would like to participate in #2. I will be sending out a call for submissions sometime in late January.

Horsie and Seak MAC Team Up in Pittsburgh

Here's a project many of you will be interested in: Horsie sent us an email yesterday to let us know that she's teamed up with Seak MAC (both local artists in Pittsburgh) to launch a large scale international outdoor street art show at the skinny building in the center of town. Here's an overview of the project, written by Seak:

"Basically there is a building right in the middle of downtown pittsburgh that is so skinny the upper two stories have remained perpetually vacant. "skinny" as in the building is literally 5 and a half feet deep. the first level is a t-shirt counter but the top two aren't much more than a hallway to nowhere. there are 22 windows that measure around 6 ft. wide by 7 ft. tall that face one of the city's busiest streets. a couple of years ago al kovacik and pat clark wrote a proposal to the owners of the building asking to lease it for free so that they could display artwork that could be viewed from the street. the owners agreed and there have been several displays which have generally been works on paper hung inside the windows. i was involved with a show there about a year ago and i fell in love with the space but
felt that more could be done with it. al and pat had given me an open invitation to use the space again so i came up with the idea of bringing in prolific artists from around the globe and pasting the work directly on the outside of the windows rather than hanging it inside. because the work is viewed from 2 to 3 stories below, scale is important. we broke the layout into 8 "spots". artists who's work will be seen in these spots include seak m.a.c. (pittsburgh pa), horsie (pittsburgh pa), swoon (new york city), bl4ckh4m (pittsburgh pa) and freaklub (barcelona spain). the show will be installed on sunday february 1st and the party will be on the following weekend. the outdoor part will run for a little over a month. pittsburgh is not the largest city but it is a place where an event like this can have an impact. the street art scene has exploded over the last year and i think people are becoming increasingly interested in the idea and haven't grown disinterested or become desensitized by it. the city is also strapped financially right now and there are plenty of vacant spaces to fill and very little buffing going on... the more people exposed to the idea of putting up work in public spaces the better.

If you're interested in participating by having your work included inside - and hopefully outside - the party space for the opening, drop Horsie an email at horsie_is_a_girl@hotmail.com. You can send your work to:

The Street Changes Forever Everywhere
c/o Jude
424 Gold Way

The deadline is Feb. 1, so get to work. :)

Add Another One To The List -- Congratulations Dalek.

This past Saturday afternoon, just before it started to snow like crazy here in New York, we caught up with one of our favorite artists, Dalek. We were thrilled to hear that less than two weeks ago, Dalek and his wife had their first child, a baby boy named James. If you're keeping score, that's at least four in the last three weeks alone. Other artists who've recently had their first child include MCA, Vinnie Ray, and Michael DeFeo (aka the Flower Guy) Congratulations to all of you!

Kev Grey - The Vitals

Age: 24
Hometown: Tracksuitville, Liverpool
Where do you live now?: La-town, Liverpool.
How long have you been creating street art?: Since just before my seventeenth birthday.
What did you do last night?: I went to Manchester to watch Danko Jones play live, and got drunk.
What is your favourite thing to eat for dinner?: Chicken.
Who is your favourite fictional character?: Frank, Henry Chinaski and Moe from The Simpsons
What do you currently have in your pockets?: Nothing, but I'm wearing my Motorhead belt buckle.
If you were given more time , what would you do with it?: I don't know.
Who do you love?: Emily Booth.

Kev - The A's to Our Q's:

Wooster: How did you get started in creating art for the street?

Kev: When I was about 10 or 11 I used to go out skateboarding and I'd see tags and pieces by Keos and Stok around where I lived. Keos was my favourite writer back then and although I never knew them it got me curious and I always checked out graf wherever I'd go. Then when I was 16 I found Subway Art in the library where I was in college and it just made sense so I went and got two cans of paint and attempted my first piece. I still hadn't met any writers at this point but as I was painting somebody came up on the bridge so I hid my paint but he approached me and asked if I wanted him to look out for people approaching, I then found out he was a local writer who at that time was writing Aim and we got talking and he later shown me his sketches and we started going out painting together.

Wooster: What other street artists do you admire and why?

Kev: People like Ghost and Reas, just because I like the sense of humour they have in their work. Plus especially with Ghost I just think he's developed his own style which is the shit. I also like the work of Kid acne who I got to know as a friend, so it's more of a relaxed environment when you paint with someone like that. He's also helped me out with pushing my work by putting stuff on their Invisible Spies website and stuff like that. I look to a lot of old New York writers like P.Nut 2, Blade & Comet, Death, SaneSmith. All that stuff. It was Mist One and Izal from Sheffield who got me into all old pieces. Also piece's by Dixie, which can be funny. Imagine a fruity sailor getting loose with montana! I've also recently really got into the work of KRSN from Paris. I met him when I was over there and his style and dark subject matter is inspiring. I rate him a lot, he's my favourite artist at the moment. I'd like to do some work with him in the future.

Wooster: What's your favourite city, neighbourhood, or block, to post and/or to see street art?

Kev: Sheffield's probably been my favourite place to get busy. I went to New York a few years ago though and the amount of bombing, posters, stencils and stickers I saw was amazing. There was somebody who had mutilated children's dolls and pinned them to street signs which I really liked. It's always interesting to go somewhere new and find something you like.

Wooster: What inspires you now?

Kev: I used to make zines of comic strips when I was about fourteen, and back then all my influences came from comics like Zap, Tank Girl, Milk & Cheese, stuff like that. And apart from the writers I mentioned before I'm still influenced by comic artists/illustrators. I don't read many comics now but people like Jim Woodring, Rick Griffin and Dan Clowes. Also one of the biggest influences I've had is from tattoo culture. I first got tattooed when I was eighteen without really thinking about it but after that I started looking at all the different styles and since then I've grown to love old 50's tattoos. I think it's getting done to death now though, but I try to bring my own style to it. I think Giant One has done some amazing work based on tattoos and graffiti in his zines at Skullzpress. I had an exhibition in Physical Poetry tattoo parlour in Leeds recently and got given a free tattoo for doing the show and painting some of my birds in the studio, it was of a grinning skull with his head exploding with butterfly wings and a banner saying 'Loaded' - that was awesome. The artist Dave Bewick only does custom work and he likes similar styles to what I do. I think overall I'm just inspired when I see people doing what they want to do, but it's always good at those moments when you see something that just blows your head off because it's so good.

Wooster: What are you currently working on? Can you give us a sneak peek?

Kev: I've just released a series of t-shirts called Dust Highway and I'm also working on a zine with the same title which should be ready some time early in 2004. Dust Highway is a theme loosely influenced by the song 'Lost Highway' by Hank Williams. I also want to do more pieces with my characters and not just sticking to letters which I've been getting bored of. There's also talk of maybe going to New York with East Skateboards who I've designed skateboards for. The idea is to go over and the skaters do their thing and we'll put on a small exhibition somewhere and then get an English skateboard magazine to cover the whole trip. Other than that I'm just drawing and I'm sure I'll stay busy making stickers or whatever. I'd also like to keep putting on exhibitions.

Mine's a double!

Profile: 86

86 - The Vitals:

Age: 26
Hometown: Rio de Janeiro - RJ
Where do you now live?: Rio de Janeiro - RJ
How long have you been creating street art?: About two years
What did you do last night?: test a digital camera i bought
What is your favorite thing to eat for dinner?: pizza and pasta in general
Who is your favorite fictional character?: hmm.. Hulk, Predator.
What do you currently have in your pockets?: my wallet, keys and stickers
If you were given "more time," what would you do with it?: travel to other countries, give more time to my arts.
Who do you love?: my girl and who love me

86 - The A's to Our Q's:

Wooster: How did you get started in creating art for the street?

86: About two years, I started with print stickers, then, right away, i decided to use my experience on serigraphic t-shirts to start making posters for the streets. I always like russian construtivism and soviet war poster, so, i decided to use this contrutivist style to create serigraph poster arts with positive messages. By the way, the influence of russian contrutivism was always on my graphic artist life.

Wooster: What other street artists do you most admire and why?

86: I like too much the works of my friend CALMA, from Sao Paulo (Brazil), because he has a similar effort to introduce urban intervention culture here in Brazil; Buffy Monster; Shepard Fairey; and LUNA, from Sweden, that for me is the main name in that country. I know his preocupation on making a more serious thing for our scene.

Wooster: What's your favorite city, neighborhood, or block, to post and/or to see street art?

86: Rio de Janeiro. Special plans for this place.

Wooster: What inspires you now?

86: The aesthetical of the soviet war posters; Shepard Fairey arts; and my homeland.

Wooster: What are you currently working on? Can you give us a sneak peek?

86: Well, first a promo: some of my arts will be in an alternative art exposition in Lublin, Polland from December 16th until January (more info soon at www.ack.lublin.pl). And next year, on the first quarter, will occurs a new expo of my posters and stickers here in Rio de Janeiro, probably a split with CALMA. At this moment i'm making new serigraphy poster arts, always inspired by the russian construtivism and, with its, i will keep taking protests and nice messages to the world. At the same time, i'm concentrating efforts to spread the serigraphy street poster art as a real form of art. I will start to do talks about urban intervention. There are many important things and concepts behind of all of this. Most important than simply paste papers. That's it.
