Profile : Darius and Downey
hello, this is swoon from brooklyn, i ill be taking up the airwaves for a week and trying to give a peek into the bowels of brooklyn (and beyond) to some of the stuff that is nearest and dearest to me, with that in mind i think it's appropriate that i start with two of my all time favorite street artists and biggest inspirations darius and downey. i met these guys along with their friend quennel jones about four years ago when they had just begun filming their documentary "public discourse". i was jut sticking my first sticker at the time and for some reason they decided they wanted to document that. the movie is out now and is a great document of all sorts of street art in new york city.......i'll let them talk now.Age: Downey 23, Darius Jones 24
Hometown: Downey- born in Louisville but represents Atlanta. Darius Jones- born in Richmond represents Cincinnati.
Where do you now live? We both just moved from Brooklyn to London about a week ago.
How long have you been creating street art?:
Darius Jones has been involved with graffiti for about 7 years. Downey started street installations 3 years ago. But our work rides in unison.
Wooster: How did you get started in creating art for the street?
Darius Jones- he used to be called verbs. He was a traditional graffiti writer for about 5 years. But he adopted his current pen name more than 2 years ago.
Downey- I started making a film about street art with Quenell Jones called Public Discourse. Through this I met many people including Verbs. The rest is history.
Wooster: What other street artists do you most admire and why?
JJ Veronis is our Favorite street artist. He has immense inspiration and commitment. His pieces are always one of a kind and three dimensional and he never signs them. They seem to fit perfectly into their environment. But in close second stands Revs. His work has a raw energy that is unparalleled. His innovations seem endless and are unique enough to require a "reinvention of the wheel."
Wooster: What's your favorite city, neighborhood, or block to post street art in?
It is hard to pick one favorite. Every place has something different to offer. We just love working outside. We try to make decisions about our world based on first hand experience. We study the people and the environment before each installation attempting to speak to them with sincerity and humor. We always say that we do this "for the people."
Wooster: What inspires you now?
A new audience, culture, and environment.
Wooster: What are you currently working on?
The City of London
