IS THIS YOU

Finally, I couldn't write a bit about Brighton without mentioning IS THIS YOU. This guy uses found photo's of random people as street art, and his stuff is ill. He's been featured on Wooster before, but when he found out I was writing this feature he sent me this:

"...Every week a new campaign. These pics feature new billboard work in London and Brighton, plus an 'interactive sticker' campaign -- each sticker features a 'local' version of the site for local people without internet access. Also, been doing sticker exchanges with Abe Lincoln jr in New York, Jet Pac in Old York and Color Your City in Holland."

Mysterious Al vs. Brighton!!

Well, woosters- Since my crew (LOW WAGE) are pushing the buttons this week, I thought I'd take this opportunity to bring the world up to scratch with what's happening in the tatty seaside town of Brighton- I've had the fortune of freelancing there a few days a week for a while now- and I have to say that the street scene down there is bananas. Brighton is a favoured retreat of PMH and me for dirty weekends of bombing and drinking (in equal amounts). It seems that lots of dope talent + lots of cider by the coast is obiviously the recipie for some next-level shit. Here's the low down on a few of the artists I'm diggin' down there...

Mishfit: The Vitals

Age?:24
Hometown: Born in Guildford, England.
Where do you now live?: Brighton
How long have you been creating street art?: about a year
What did you do last night?: Recovered from a heavy weekend, drew robotic chickens and bitched about boys!
What is your favorite thing to eat for dinner? Anything with seafood in it....mmmm tentacles!
Who is your favourite fictional character?: ...... that's a tough one.....possibly cat woman, and Dr Zoyburg from Futurama, A combination of the 2...that would be mad shit.
What do you currently have in your pockets?: You should never ask a lady what she has in her pockets.
If you were given "more time," what would you do with it? I never get the time to do the amount of painting/posting /scribbling that I want, so obviously hit it harder....learn another language, coz I'm sick of feeling like an ignorant British oik every time I go away, snowboard more and realistically, probably spend a lot more time being drunk.
Who do you love?: My folks and my mates who are a constant source of amusement and inspiration.

Mishfit : The Q's

Wooster: How did you get started in creating art for the street?
I guess the urge to scribble is too much to keep confined to a sketchbook or canvas and sooner or later you find yourself out at night with markers, I started scribbling on the way home from clubs, just winging it, no real plan. I got so much out of it, that I started being a bit more organized, seeking out like minded playmates for nocturnal antics.

Wooster: What other street artists do you most admire and why?
There are so many people that just blow me away, there's not enough room.

Wooster: What's your favorite city, neighborhood, or block, to post and/or to see street art?
Haven't found it yet, but when you see stuff out in the countryside or other really unexpected places, it just makes you grin, I love that .

Wooster: What inspires you now?
My inspirations change as often as my work does, but at present its usually really simple things, instincts/emotions, organic v's mechanical, anything that makes me laugh. So many mundane things trigger weird little stories in my head and I think that's where my images come from.

But recently the biggest inspiration is hooking up with other artists, just going out with someone, winging it, swapping pieces half way through, just being really playful, you get some interesting results and end up with something that feels really fresh. I like letting the process influence my work.

Wooster: What are you currently working on? Can you give us a sneak peek?
It's all about naked girls and mutant creatures at the moment. Who knows what its gonna be next month, but I have a sneaky suspicion that some badass robotic chickens may be hatching south side! Its Halloween too, so maybe some spooky shit.

AIRGOOSE - THE VITALS

Age: old enough to know better
Hometown: a tree house, in a big forest up north, england
Where do you now live: in a beach hut, brighton, england
How long have you been creating street art: as Airgoose1, 10 months... but i've been up under an hundred different names for a hundred different years.

What did you do last night: I've got flu, brought on by a heavy weekend of tuaca, mushrooms and ecstacy... so spent the night in bed by myself, watchin shit telly and snortin vitamin c.

What is your favorite thing to eat for dinner: cripsy duck in pancakes, mmm proper lush

Who is your favorite fictional character: calvin from calvin and hobbes, we'v got a few things in common

What do you currently have in your pockets: mobile, keys, cheese, trees and a handful of bees

If you were given "more time," what would you do with it: learn how to sleep more. and gettin up more with my crew: The 40 Thieves

Who do you love: Friends and family... no girl at the mo, but i'm workin on it. she will be mine

AIRGOOSE : The Q's

How did you get started in creating art for the street?
I'd been doin really shitty graff for years. Then got into doin stickers around 97/98 when i realised i was much better drawin my characters on stickers in the house rather than on a wall off me head at three in the mornin. not that that stops me gettin up tho, theres nothin better than gettin a fresh tag or some lovelly proportioned character on a lovelly spot. Movin to brighton was proably the biggest push into gettin back involved in street art. It was the first time i got hold of proper paint (Cheers dave, rarekind), big fuck off photocopies and also meetin good friends like muju who was also very keen to get busy out and about.

What other street artists do you most admire and why?
at the mo i'm really into supakitch, his charcters and colours are well nice but he also rocks a real nice bubble letter style which always goes down well in my house. Other big faves are Freaklub, os gemeos, Paris, mudwig, miss van, FKC, sumo, Aagh, ace, defacto, dist, nylon and chum 101.

What's your favorite city, neighborhood, or block, to post and/or to see street art?
I gotta say brighton, theres some good spots and its very lively on the sticker front. it gets buffed shit loads and the council are mad on top of the the whole taggin scene... theres alot of writers in brighton, some of the best, some of the worst. you'v also got Black Rock which is one of the best hall of fames in the uk, so all in all its a pretty good place.

What inspires you now?
Meetin up with like minded friends, who wanna have a drink a smoke and go out and get up, with whatever is a hand. wether it be some nice vinyl stickers they've had printed up, some hand drawns, a bag full of beltons, a chrome-pocket bomber, or just a pentel to attack a pub toilet wall. basically anybody who just wants to get creative and who is not scared of doin it different.

oh yeah girls too...

What are you currently working on? Can you give us a sneak peek?
its just startin to get dark again so my fingers are gettin itchy after a nice long holiday through the summer... i only managed to drag my arse away from the beach a few times to get up with muju and de, and guests such as pmh, tlp and mysterious al. So i'm gonna be lurkin in the shadows, my posters are gonna get bigger, my characters sweeter and i'm also gonna get back into doin throw-ups and dubs, dunno why just feel like it... ps.this all seems very familiar???

Profile : AEON

Aeon = an immeasurably or indefinitely long period of time. Well that might be what aeon means according to the dictionary but in reality, in the world of street art it has taken this australian only a short while to cover london, from north to south, east to west in his unique take on graf stickering.

The art of stickers started with graf and has only recently been taken by the world of illustrators and artists, but a few people have been keeping the graf side on lock, and aeon is one of those heads. All over london you can see his signed for stickers coated in bright montana, but lately he has been venutring into posters, and of course his usual graf... but as soon as something good happens, sods law comes into effect, and no sooner has he arrived and made a dent on the scene in london, then he's off, back to australia because of university and visas. So really this is a celebration and retrospective of aeon's london street campaign. Viva SDM!

AEON: The Vitals

Age: 25.
Hometown: Melbourne, Australia.
Where do you now live: London.
How long have you been creating street art: Since 1996.

What did you do last night:
I went out with Ronzo, PMH and Dscreat. We put up posters and drew on random bits of wood and stuff arround Shorditch.

What is your favorite thing to eat for dinner:
Wagamumma!

Who is your favorite fictional character:
Jake and Elwood from the Blues Brothers.

What do you currently have in your pockets:
A travel card, wad of stickers, some nozles and an empty wallet.

If you were given "more time," what would you do with it:
I would do what I allways do but I'd work out a way to do it without being broke and without having to work.

Who do you love:
I love all my family and friends, my girlfriend Claire.

AEON: The Q's

How did you get started in creating art for the street?
I got into Graffiti at a young age. My parrents split when I was young and I would have to take the long journey to Belgrave to see my Dad every weekend. I saw heaps of amazing graff allong the train lines and got into it like that. When I left Melbourne there wasn't many people doing street art. I traveled to Thailand and wanted to get up. I knew that it was two years in jail for a spliff so I didn't want to chance it with gaff. I went to a newsagent and brought a packet of blank stickers to draw on and stick up. From then on I haven't stoped. When I got to London I realized that there was a sticker scene. So I tried my hardest to get up so I could meet people.

What other street artists do you most admire and why?
SDM crew, D*face, PMH, The London Police, Solo one, Miss Van, The Finders Keepers crew , Tusk 2 and all the people I put stuff up with. I love it when you walk around and see stuff by all your friends from different parts of the world.

What's your favorite city, neighborhood, or block, to post and/or to see street art?
Melbourne and London especialy Shorditch because there is on place like home! Barcelona, Prague and Amsterdam and also Dublin because it is so easy.

What inspires you now?
All my friends. All my graff mates and all my street art mates are allways up for getting up. That makes things move on a lot faster because you want to try new things all the time. I hate sitting on an idea for too long.

What are you currently working on? Can you give us a sneak peek?
It's allready up! I had a new graff style that I have just painted and I've been painting newspaper and posting them up around London. This is as new as it gets. They are both fresh off the press.

Mysterious Al Vs. Deal Real

What up, dudes? Monday 13th saw the opening night for my solo in-store at Deal Real Records. I spent three full nights locked inside the shop with paint buckets, spraycans and posca markers. I had to work under the cover of night in order to keep my identity top secret. Anyway, despite being messed around and let down at every step of the way by certain members of the UK hip-hop community, the opening night was a complete success, even though we were forced to shut down after only 90 minutes of noise making.

Everyone that came down had a most happening time, with off- the-hook beatmaking and live MC by some of Londons hottest rising stars- Ardy, Benny Silver and Jeff Metal.

I'd like to publicallly thank my homeboy Jeff Metal for putting up with me stressing out for the last three days, and helping me paint my fill-ins.

The show is at Deal Real Records, 3 Marlborough Court (off Carnaby Street), Soho, and will run for a couple of months. For all those of you who couldn't make it, here are some photo's to whet your appetites... Please enjoy!

Profile : EKO

Eko is an amazing artist with a strong sense of line and form and a current predilection for bird boxes. He is also a member of Bristol's TCF and Wet Shame crews. This year he has been painting up and down the UK and also taking part in events across in New York and Paris. At an event at Royalcheese in Paris he took his bird boxes into three dimensions. Currently on the streets of Bristol you can find his rather elegantly bugged-out hand-cut stickers. He is one of my favourites artists and I'm pleased to present his vitals.

EKO: The Q's

Wooster: How did you get started in creating art for the street?
i suppose the want and need to get up with tags and spraypaint had long disappered and much more time spent creating at home with the aid of the computer, the idea of crafting something over time has partially replaced the much more throw away ethos of graffiti for me,the need to see something unexplained on a surface as i walk from a to b,i like things to have no obvious meaning ,i dont like having things spelled out to me,there s no room left for the mind to wonder,i dont need a beginning middle or end ,a story told with no room for improvement or embellishments. a yarn ,a tale or a lie is always more interesting, escapeism i guess

Wooster: What other street artists do you most admire and why?
last night i discoverd a gallery on ecosystem of the flying fortress ,i was well aware and loved his panzer bear, but i didnt know he was so skilled with the spraying implement doubley impressed, well done old chap

Wooster: What's your favorite city, neighborhood, or block, to post and/or to see street art?
if only the streets were covered in well drawn loveingly crafted images in my neck of the woods, id love to say bristol but i cant, dont know about that Q

Wooster: What inspires you now?
materials, i mean the implements i use they have huge effect on me

Wooster: What are you currently working on? Can you give us a sneak peek?
im building real birdboxs in wood, ive found that i really love working with wood, so my minds racing at all the possibilties, all the many ways to customize the alredy well established shape of a bird box

Holidays

\Ok, so summer was a while ago, but just to continue that "What I Did On My Holidays" theme, here are some pics from Italy. Myself and Kerrianne took a trip from Venice to Verona, Florence and Pisa. In Pisa, by complete accident we found a restored mural by Keith Haring on the side of a nunnery from his visit there in 1989. We spotted good stuff everywhere from the likes of Above, L'Atlas, 108 and many more but here are a few pictures from some artists in Florence signing as Run and Mr Kerosotros. Italy -- we loved your art as much as your gelati (ice cream). CIAO CIAO!

Patrick Mimran

This summer, as I was travelling on a Vaparetto down the grand canal in Venice, I spotted a sign reading "Art is not where you think you're going to find it". For me it was the perfect quote for the book on graffiti which I was just finishing writing. I then contacted the artist to ask for his permission to quote it. He was more than happy to do this and then told me about his other billboard projects...

For a year Patrick Mimran has been renting out billboard spaces in the Chelsea district of New York as a way to engage people outside of the gallery system. The theme is the meaning of art and also the way in which it should be understood.
