NYC | Sep 16 | Andrew Pommier "Whale Rider"
Artist Andrew Pommier, the young Canadian illustrator, painter, and doodler, today presents his exhibit "Whale Fighter" at 55DSL Flagship Union Square. Andrew Pommier has been working closely on idea's that were inspired by Herman Melville's "Moby Dick" and are the basis for the current exhibit, "Whale Fighter." It is the particular passage describing a crewmember's discovery of what he believes is the great white whale [long searched for by Captain Ahab] that serves as the foundation of the artwork. As the story reveals, on closer inspection, the sea creature turns out to be a giant squid that has floated to the surface. In Pommier's view, the giant squid symbolizes the strength of such sea creatures and the battles thought to take place between the great whales and giant squids. Pommier is also challenged by the creatures' awkward and mysterious ways that make them intriguing to draw.
"I work with themes that are always in a state of flux," Pommier said. As many in the art community know, he draws constantly with his sketchbook always at hand. Anything and everything inspires Pommier -- from television to books to travel to other artists. Oddity is always central to his work.
Please join 55DSL at the New York flagship store on 1 Union Square West for the "Whale Fighter" Exhibit, which runs from September 16 - November 16, 2003.

Super APE Stars

So it looks like this coming Monday, September 15th, may be the day when the Bathing Ape/adidas remixed Superstars I's (now called, appropriately "Super APE Stars") have finally cleared US customs and will go on sale at the adidas Soho store. (At least that's what the manager of the store has been telling us so if they don't go on sale Monday, don't blame us, okay?). If you haven't seen them yet, it's definately some of Nigo's best work to date. We've been eyein' the Remix camos in the plexi cases at the adidas store for a couple of weeks now. When they do go out on Monday, the whole thing will last the blink of an eye, as there's only 500 pair of three different styles. That's 500 pair per style worldwide! So don't expect more than 50 pair or so at the Soho store. The Superskate remix's are set to launch in October.
The BAPE shoes are part of the adidas !s!gned (I-signed) series, an on-going collaborative project between adidas and emerging artists and designers. Past collaborations have included Bless, Saskia Van Drimmelen, Kostas Murkudis, NOKI, Stella McCartney, OWN, Jeremy Scott and ALIFENYC.
So if you head over to the store on Monday, look out for a dude and his dog (a brown Weimie named Hudson) We'll be out there on line with the rest of you guys.
Each comes in a custom adidas/BAPE camo box, with special BAPE tissue paper and a leather hang tag. Each box also includes 3 different pair of custom BAPE extra fat laces.
Price: Probably around $150 if I remember correctly, but again, don't quote us.

BE VERY AFRAID... the next step is to make the roadkill rabbit, which will also probably have lots of blood on it... sweet."

The Bronx Soundwalk

This morning we got to peep the latest edition of Soundwalk - the super cool CD based "audio guide for insiders" that you may have seen at Urban Outfitters in NYC. (That is if you're the Urban Outfitters type) After creating tours of New York's Chinatown, the Lower East Side, Times Square and Dumbo, the guys over at Soundwalk/Oversampling have now teamed up with adidas to produce a kickass hip hop inspired audio tour of the Bronx. Yes, the fuckin' Bronx. 'about time the Bronx got some respect. This time out the Soundwalk team has spared no expense, blowing the thing up to three CD's. Each CD tackles a distinct Bronx neighborhood: Yankee Stadium, Hunts Point and Soundview. One of the CD's features Hunts Point killer graffiti scene, with emphasis on the TATS CRU, CRASH, CHAIN3 and the artwork of John Ahearn and Rigoberto Torres. The narrator is none other than BG183 of TATS CRU. Another CD centers on the Soundview/Bronx River area that's the home of Afrika Bambaataa and the Zulu Nation and is known as the birthplace of hip-hop. It includes interviews with Afrika Bambaataa, GrandWizzard Theodore, Kool DJ Red Alert, and GrandMaster Caz. Narrator is the legendary DJ and producer The Original Jazzy Jay, who started playing in the streets of the Bronx under the guidance of Afrika Bambaataa. He's worked with Fat Joe, Brand Nubian, A Tribe Called Quest, and many others. Pretty dope, right?
Availability: You gotta wait until the 16th of this month. Then you can get it at places like the MoMa Design Store, Tower Records, The Apartment, and other places

Influenza's 5 most popular tips

Influenza's 5 most popular tips (in random order)
Tip 3. Be in the field as much as you can. Keep on pushing it!
Tip 4. Make it stick on all surfaces.
Tip 2. Try to get maximum fun out of what you're doing
Tip 6. Have an enemy (or two) to project your fanatism on. (cause thats what you need if you want to be out there every single day) Here some to choose from: The power of architecture over our daily urban lives; Egoism in society (blame it on the neighbor); Bad design in general; Graphic design more specific! Aah , what are those people doing! Do they not have any better ambition that to make shit for others like that?!; The unstoppable and even expanding influence of money in our life (wished i had some of that stuff though..); oh yea, and uniformed people, the corporate business look, the security guy and on top of course the cop..
Tip 4. Get ill to get better (cause somehow everything works like a child disease)
Tip 5. Love your neighbor. Hate her boyfriend..
Tip 8. Treat life as one big IQ-test. It helps relativating a lot..haha
Tip 5. Don't care about the rest but try always to surprise yourself
Tip 1. Being the best sounds good but second best is good enough.
Tip 9. Share the fun. There are a million reasons for but friends are the best.
Tip 4. Never do what you are told.

How long have you been creating street art?: I started painting walls in 1992, I started installing work from the studio in 1999.
What did you do last night?: A late night bike ride through the streets of Chicago.

C.R.A.P Art - The A's to Our Q's:
Wooster: How did you get started in creating art for the street?
C.R.A.P Art: I first started experimenting with wheat pasting in 1996, but I didn't get serious until 1999 when I was living in New Orleans. I wanted a way to balance the work that I was showing in galleries, and a way that people could collect free work and take it for themselves if they desired.
Wooster: What other street artists do you most admire and why?
C.R.A.P Art: I admire all the usual heavyweights, Banksy, WK, Invader, etc. I really enjoy the work that I have seen by Fosik and RotGut. A nice, dirty feel. Here in Chicago, Silva and friends has installed some terrific images lately. And the work of the FMK crew who taught me alot as I got started a long time ago.
Wooster: What's your favorite city, neighborhood, or block, to post and/or to see street art?
C.R.A.P Art: I would have to say Chicago is great to see work in because I appreciate the effort that people go through to install here. The shelf life can be pretty short. Frenchman St. in New Orleans was always fun as well.
Wooster: What inspires you now?:
C.R.A.P Art: The possibilities that are around each corner. Wandering around the city with no destination point.
Wooster: What are you currently working on? Can you give us a sneak peek?
C.R.A.P Art: Drawing on found blueprints, scrap metal, and the like.

"Creative Time is delighted to announce Chinese artist Cai Guo-Qiang's Light Cycle, an explosion event that will illuminate Central Park on Monday, September 15, 2003, at 7:45 p.m. for a duration of 4 to 5 minutes, in celebration of Central Park's 150th anniversary. Signifying renewal and wholeness, the event has been specially commissioned as the denouement of a summer-long celebration of the vitality brought to our City by Central Park. Light Cycle will highlight the Park as the heart of Manhattan, rendering it the brightest point of the City for one festive night. Light Cycle is curated by Creative Time, presented in conjunction with The City of New York and the Central Park Conservancy, and sponsored by Haagen-Dazs as part of their Art of Pure Pleasure initiative. Designed to provide a variety of experiences, Light Cycle will unfold in three stages from five firing locations in the Park, taking as its central motif a 1,000 foot high colossal halo of fire and light. Cai Guo-Qiang, world renowned for his explosion projects, in which he uses gunpowder as an artistic and expressive medium, has collaborated with Fireworks by Grucci, America's oldest fireworks company, to develop state-of-the-art technology that employs programmable microchips in each shell, allowing the artist to draw in the sky. The total duration of Light Cycle will be approximately 4 to 5 minutes."

Veronique Vienne' New Book On Designer Chip Kidd

We've been a huge fan of Chip Kidd's book jacket designs since first seeing his work on Donna Tart's THE SECRET HISTORY in 1992 (a collaboration with Barbara de Wilde). Yale University Press' Monographics Books now gives Chip the full on star treatment he deserves with a well illustrated book that examines Kidd's design work and the context behind it. If you are a designer or artist, this will be a book that you will return to time and time again for inspiration.
The Essentials:
Available on Amazon for $13.97
Book is Paperback and 112 pages

Ewos' Angry Dog mini created for Toy2R's Qee Series 3

We've been diggin' Ewos' whacked out graf for a while now, so we couldn't have been happier to learn that Ewos' Angry Dog character is included in the latest Qee Series from Toy2R. When the new Kid Robot store opened on Sunday around the corner from our flat in Soho, we immediately headed over and dropped a shit load of our hard earned money in pursuit of getting one of Ewos' figures in the blind chase. Alas we didn't get one, but that's not going to stop us. Payday is Friday and we're going back for more.
Via Email from Ewos on 9/9: "Hey wooster! hahah i laughed alot at your text on my qee daamn! well i sell them too and then you get the red-black one in a polybag (special edition) or the black and white one in the box. could you put this email order_gee@hotmail.com for peolpe that really want this one ans not buy alot untill they got the one they want..."

"this summer i've got no money left to travel... so i've decided to build my street art a bit more... staying in Paris among tourist and heat waves... but with some friends (Halieutik, etc..) we're able to make a lot of different things... sometimes sadness is energy of happiness... please find some results with these joined files and especially the Who_Art_U file who's a stick made of 380 A3 paper sheets ... amazing ?"

What I Did On My Summer Vacation... by Craig Metzger
"This summer has been super hectic but at the same time great fun. In terms of art things I spent a good part of the summer meeting artists and doing some collaborations here and there. I've also been collecting pieces for a street project I hope to start this fall so keep an eye out if you live in nyc. I'll keep this short and sweet but I attached some of the collab pieces I did this summer for you to enjoy. Have a great Fall and be safe.... craig"
