Upon entering the opening night party for 55DSL and Faesthetic’s
upcoming book 8.5” x 11” this past Tuesday night, you were immediately
confronted with a mash of people all moving to some fabulous beats. In the room,
there was no color; no red baseball hats, no pink clubbing shirts, no yellow
messenger bags.  Only black, white, and a bit of army green.  The art, the
clothes, the hair - everything was dark.

John from 55dsl asked artists from across the globe to
contribute 8.5” by 11” sketches of their work. Some came by fax with bold lines
and curves, while others were drawn with precise fine lines. Between the motion
of the opening night, and the intensity of the often minutely detailed work, it
took time to soak up all the talent in the room. This is not a show you can view
quickly

So over a cold Tiger Beer, we set out to apprciate each
piece. The detail in most of the drawings is intense - you don’t find this on
the street or in most sticks.  Two of my favorites were “Hurt Me” and “Rainbow
Eyes” from MCA at Evil Design.  I met
Travis Millard, whose works
features humans with elongated arms holding sunglasses or funky types with their
eyes buggin.  All in all. its definately worth the trip down to 55dsl in Union
Square to see the works. Just bring along a microscope and a pair of binoculars
as most of the pieces are placed high up on the wall.
